Handmade Coffee Anyone?

For starters, I love coffee. Not just for the caffeine, but I love it as a drink. The flavors, everything. I drink my coffee black 90% of the time and like it full flavored.

Handmade coffee is taking off and people have been breaking away from machine made coffee for a while. In the web/tech community handmade coffee is a legit thing. People are all about it. I've slowly been switching over. My drip coffee maker broke, then bought a french press. It honestly takes me less time/effort to brew coffee with a french press than a drip maker.

So I bought an Aeropress. I haven't used it yet, but about to give it a whirl. Video for reference for those unfamiliar.



I have also thought about getting a Chemex too. After a lot of research I went with the Aeropress for a few factors, but I still want a Chemex. Mainly because of the reviews, ease of cleanup, more durable (plastic v. glass).



Anyone else like handmade craft coffee? Any particular gear you enjoy? Discuss.

yeah i use aero press every day and sometimes pour overs.

Chemex brah? u gonna pay 40$ for the logo on a glass funnel?

I'm a coffee snob and i think fetishization of pour over funnels is retarded.

I have a manual grinder attached to my kitchen wall and I use a stove-top moka pot. Does that qualify?

It's not so much a taste thing for me as a way to save space (no need for a big espresso machine - or even a small one) and enjoy the ritual of brewing a nice cuppa.

Never used a Chemix, but I know people that use it daily at their office and love it. They also have Aeropresses and love those too. He recommended the aeropress over Chemex, but he still uses the Chemex at the office for whatever reason. But yeah, based on reviews and more looking into it, I think the aeropress is better. I like the thought of a chemex for brewing larger batches at once if people come over.

That's pretty much what the core experience is about for me. But I do love the flavors, but the ritual and experience is very much a part of it.

I would recommend pour over vs aeropress just because of the volume of coffee you can make at once.  Aeropress is particularly good in a situation where you have fine control over the grind and enjoy drinking 1 small coffee drink, pour over is the same as a normal coffee maker.

systems a french press, other styles of percolators or even a drip pot

I dunno, just made my first cup with it and it's a lot better than my traditional French press. Same bean, same roast, just the press is different. I've been on the French press for over a year now, so definitely not placebo compared to my prev method. As to other methods, not sure.

But yeah, lol at the hipsters.

That's what I am thinking about getting next. I definitely wanted an Aeropress though, so glad I have it either way. 9/10 times I just make my own single cup of coffee. And making 2 8oz cups during the day that taste great is better than the 1 16oz that I sip on a while tends to go stale pretty quickly.
