A Rye question
    #866109 - 09/05/02 08:44 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I have heard MANY types of grains work. GREAT!! But I am wondering if this one works. I picked it up at a brew store.. the package reads this exactly:

Weyermann
Rye Malt
2 Row Barley Malt
Product of Germany
EBC 6-10/ Lovibond 2.5-3
1 POUND

It looks exactly like the top pic in this page:

What do you guys think??

Damn it. I know it's better but I simply cannot find vermiculite. I found some GREAT organic brown rice for cheap.. but CANNOT find vermiculite. Is the rye I have usable?? The lady said it had not been baked as the chocolate rye was.

Ah. Well I'm asking for advice on people that use grains etc to grow instead of BRF and Vermiculite. I know I can order it bud have limited funds at the moment.. just paid rent.. and all the usual BS bills. I want to do it right, and have two pounds of this rye right in front of me at the moment. So for the members that use rye and grains... can I use them?? Also, are there other grains that I should/can put w/ this rye in the PF jar that you'd reccomend??

Thanks a lot,

Sammy

Thanks a lot guys!! I FOUND vermiculite today! I insisted that they check the back room at Lowes and they found a case. I of course bought it all. I am going to try two jars of the grain to see which one is better for the strain I have. Also, there is about 10,000 pounds of hoarse shit in my old town, I'm going to visit there at the end of the month. There are also bales of Rye Straw at Lowes. From my understanding mushrooms will grow on shit and straw. Will it work in a PF jar or do I have to read up on casings and do it that way?? Thanks again for all the advice, it's really came in handy.

Sammy

NO you CANNOT use malted grain, it has been germinated then roasted. Completely useless.

If you have horse dung and straw, you can make your own compost.

You won't even need any vermiculite!

Wooh! This is a lot of info. My pet alligator enjoys all you guys have taught him and is awaiting the spores in the mail. I think the alligator needs new, larger jars but is happy with what he's got so he can learn from what he's about to do. My nest of bees is going to pick up a few pounds of horse shit and a few bales of straw so he can grow some quality mushrooms.

Thanks for helping out my pets

Sammy
