I read the tek for growin on rye grain on Una's new site MushMush *highly recommended* and Id really like to give it a go. I just have the following questions.
1)where do I buy proper rye grain?
and
2) what are the best brands of rye grain?
And just one more thing. If any of you are thinking about flaming me or tell me to use the search engines I want to let you know that I already have. I looked in the Mushroom Cultivation under Rye grain, buy rye, and just plain rye. So "dont speak unless it is an improvement upon the silence" MUCH THANX!!!!

25 lbs! Thats crazy! I want to make sure I can actually do the process successfully before I want to invest in something like that. I wasnt sure on wheter or not you would buy it at a health food store or an pet shop or a feed store or what so thanx youve limited down my search a bunch. There is an all natural hippy/yuppy grocery store by my house. Ill go check it out ASAP and tell you what brands, if any they have before I buy. If anyone has anymore suggestions please reply. Much thanx! the fuzzz

The tek is good and I too used and use it.
But be warned: this ratio of rye to water can easily produce a "mush", means you could get a rye blob.
Quote from the Mushmush site:
"Other authors recommend different ratios resulting in dryer spawn.
This is probably better if the spawn is used for the inoculation of bulk substrate.
We, however, grow the mushrooms directly from the spawn and have found that wetter grain results in higher yields. The mentioned ratio (1:1 by volume) contains the maximum of water. More water will result in rye grain that is too wet.
This spawn forms clumps and cannot be shaken!"
I would advise you to first try with a weight ratio of rye to water of 10/11 (f.i. 100g rye/110 g water) and if this looks too dry, you can still increase the water content a bit next time.

Brand name rye would be like brand name wheat or brand name barley. It is a commodity item and is sold as such. The grain itself is usually utilized to make something. i.e. rye bread. Although, I suppose there are people who just eat cooked rye *munch, munch*.... At Wholefoods, it is sold by the pound (or partial pound) for example, organic rye is about 1.29 per pound something like that perhaps a bit more or less I forget. Organic rye will be harvested with no preservatives or pesticides etc. For this reason, It is recommended to aquire ORGANIC rye. Most hippy health food stores like the one you mentioned will carry all kinds of 'organic' grains. Rye is CHEAP! Get a dry pound or two to try out. I rinse my rye with tap water just to remove any surface contams. I then let it soak in mineral water, in a 1 quart mason jar. I place 2.5 cups of rye in the jar and fill it up to the top with mineral water. Put the lid on to reduce contams. within about 24-30 hours the rye will have soaked up all the water. It is then ready to be pressure cooked in jars. This ratio roughly works out to 1/1.25, weight/weight, rye/water. Pretty close to the recommendation of Anno (recommended 1/1.1 weight/weight). I have found that soaking the rye instead of steeping it, gives a little better consistancy, with less mushyness. Good luck to ya! Be sure to pressure cook! I usually go for 45-60 minutes.

Fuzzy,
I get all my rye from a local lawn and garden store. They have all sorts of grass seeds, bird seeds, corn, cottonseed meal and the like all in bulk bins. You can buy as much as you want at a time. It is a True Value Hardware store, I dont know if they are in your area though. I bought a huge 30 lb bag for $5 the other day (no kidding).

I dont think we have that chain in my area. If I cant find sufficient rye from Huckleberries I'll call some gardenring stores in the phonebook.

Alright-
As promised I visited Huckleberries today. I was astounded by the assortment of natural grains they had! 4 different types of brown rice!!!! I just didnt know what to do with myself. I was like a kid in a toystore or something. Best of all everything was so cheap. I ended up buying 1 lb rye-49 cents a lb!, 1/4 cup white quinoa, some wierd grain that looked like rice called Karmasutra or something, and a type of brown rice some wierd lady suggested. She was actually very helpful she kept talking about the smell and I kept asking her all these wierd questions like "mam, yes I know it smells good but what about the texture? Describe in detail the texture of this jasmine scented rice" I felt so stupid. But I got the info I needed. She says it doesnt clump at all like white rice does and that the texture is very versatile. It all depends on how much water you put in. So I took all these grains to myco-420's place and experimented with at least 7 different substrates. It all costed me about 3 dollars and experimenting is sooooooo fun! Did you ever, when you were a child, get a cup and inside mix all of the shampoo, conditioners, and soaps you had in your house to make an ULTIMATE HAIR CLEANING FORMULA!? Well if you did its kind of that feeling :) Thanx again for all the help. Another post comming to a successful close.
