Not so newbies -- rye -- questions
    #551602 - 02/14/02 04:52 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

I had a few pint jars going as my first rye attempt and im glad I started with 2 and not 12 there are some things i've learnt. I'm defently going to have to buy some polyfill and going to have to try spawning from a grain master soon. Anyways, I have a few questions.
1. When you shake fully colonized rye how come it gets a uncolonized look?
2. I shook some rye at rought 75% and never saw the mycelium return. I opened it today and it smelt fine but there was no sign of mycelium when I broke it apart. Whats the deal?
3. After I shake a 100% colonized jar how long should I wait to dump it out and case. Does rye do good with straight verm?
4. Should I shake a rye jar just before I case it.
5. When fully colonized rye is shaken and gets the uncolonized look is it safe outside the jar (in a casing, open air etc.) ?

-1. When you shake fully colonized rye how come it gets a uncolonized look?
It's like a hair cut when you see it in the colonized state the mycelium is in long strands and when you shake it, it breaks up those strands so they are short.

-2. I shook some rye at rought 75% and never saw the mycelium return. I opened it today and it smelt fine but there was no sign of mycelium when I broke it apart. Whats the deal?

How long ago did you shake it?? it does take a few days for it to recover other then that I do not know.

-3. After I shake a 100% colonized jar how long should I wait to dump it out and case.

You can do it the same time.

Does rye do good with straight verm? I do not know I have never cased with strait verm

-4. Should I shake a rye jar just before I case it.

I do but I do not think it is written in stone

-5. When fully colonized rye is shaken and gets the uncolonized look is it safe outside the jar (in a casing, open air etc.) ?

I have never had a problem BUT I have never seen anything for or against it.

If your making rye grain spawn you can shake it at day 3 or so just to help distribute the mycelium. If your jars are 75% or more colonized, shaking at that point will only slow the groth process. The shaking actually crushes the mycelium giving it the uncolonized look.
You can case your fully colonized rye with verm just as your would a BRF/Verm jar, or use it for spawn, no need to shake it if it's all ready to use. Once it's fully colonized it's fairly resistant to easy contamination.

I as well have just upgraded to the rye method, i had that same concern myself. The jars were completely white, then i shook them up, and poured them into 8x8" cake pans. Then i cased them. This was 5 days ago. They must have recovered nicely, because the mycelium is just starting to grow through the 50/50+ casing mixture.
What do i do, wait till this casing mixture is ~25% colonized, then pop 'er in the fridge, then pull the saran wrap off, and fire it in the terrarium?

My terrarium may have a flaw too, the humidity is at 90% (guage doesnt go any higher) and the temp is 24-25.
I've currently only cased B+, because my other 3 strains have contam problems.

B+ has absolutely THRIVED in any situation i have put it in.
