when someone is inquiring about acquiring information regarding
the manufacture of Class A materials, it's usually not wise to
give them partial information, kinda like giving a gun to a kid
with the mag removed and never checking the chamber, it's enough
that they can hurt themselves or others.

this isnt debatable with me, I've seen the results of a list of
ingredients, I seen what happens with too little or wrong info

safe in regards to manufacture anyway

is it illegal for us to discuss the ingredients and even assembly of an explosive device even when we adamantly profess no desire to do so? when it is simply discussion without intent?

Actually that is only partially correct. Weighing in grains only happens in relation to firearms cartridges, as balanced by the weight of the slug in grains to get a certain muzzle velocity in feet per second. Calculations like that.

Quote:
I'm a formal Marine

I'm an informal pyrotechnician  and we weigh our lift, burst and star compositions in grams, not grains. Like, you use 80 grams of meal powder pulverone to get a 1 lb shell to a typical burst height.

Quote:
a person can make Sym-tech(a form of RDX) with a few common household chemicals and a few not so common chemicals.

You assume assembly but for Joe Blow the making of Semtex requires synthesis steps, to get the RDX and (as Chemy pointed out) the PETN to base the plastic explosive on.

There are household chemicals you can mix together to get explosives, yes, but with some exceptions nothing with enough oomph (kilometers per second) to cut through steel, like plastic explosives do. Those generally require synthesis.

We agree. People underestimate the power of high explosives. Letting a drop of nitroglycerin fall on something is the equivalent of banging it with a hammer. The two ounces of HE in a typical pineapple grenade would make an awesome banger at 100ft distance, but a piece of shrapnel of the thing might gore you to death a mile away.

Some high explosives are way safer to make and handle than fireworks products, but they require the skill of an expert to be put to reasonably safe use.

Quote:
For C4 I just thought you needed a blasting cap to set it off?

Yes C4 is cap sensitive, but you can't just walk into a hardware sore and order a box of blasting caps anymore.

Blasting caps need careful handling, they are the size of a cigarette but explode tremendously violently. If you got an electric cap a potential difference in your wiring can set it off and if its a fuse cap you got to poke a fuse in (but not too deep) and crimp it (but just right)

The loss of a hand and your hearing lies in tiny details like that, and plain old luck. High tech explosives factories explode. Storage facilities where stuff is just sitting in boxes explode. Experts with decades of experience are ripped to shreds year round.

Discussion and knowledge is legal. Use of knowledge(example: bomb making) is illegal. Even partial assembly of any explosive device is illegal.

Farmers used to be allowed to use ammonium nitrate fertilizer for making explosives.  They would use them to blow up tree stumps.  The nitrate is jus an oxidizer it won't blow up without other components.

Another common one was sodium chlorate found in some weedkiller.

Actually more often you'd simply call a blaster who did it for you for a couple of bucks. The garden variety blaster, the licensed chap with a box of sticks and some fusecaps in the trunk of his car, has been regulated out of existence.

You are dead wrong. It is explosive in its own right.

As is this one, which the IRA was rather fond of.

Since we're already on the topic, I've always wondered how the Oklahoma City Bomb was made? I've heard it was fertilizer but I never understood how it was made or ignited or why it was so powerful. If any one knows, I'd be greatly interested to know.

I think that official story was changed so many times to make it unbelievable.  They eventually claimed that the bomb he had was many thousands of pounds of fertilizer, something like 20 thousand pounds I think.

Serious pyro hobbyists and rocket builders (which are legitimate hobbies) in the USA usually point to the Oklahoma City Bombing as the moment when the public started viewing them not as hobbyists (which they are) but as potential terrorists (which they aren't).

Quote:

It wasn't ANFO, the main charge.

Quote:
I've always wondered how the Oklahoma City Bomb was made?

Basically they put empty 55 gallon drums without lids in a truck, they filled the drums with granulated powder X, then they poured gallons of liquid Y on top and they set it off with a bunch of commercial explosives and caps they stole some place. If you watch Discovery Channel they even tell you what X and Y were, its hardly classified information nor is it rocket science, or those boneheads couldnt have pulled it off.

It was particularly powerful because liquid Y can be made to explode particularly fast, and powder X gives it a lot more power. Combined you have a lot of energy set free in a very short time, and if that happens extremely enough some pretty wild shit happens.

Take a candle. You light a candle, drop some acid, and all night long the candle illuminates your trip :awesome: If that candle didn't burn up in 12 hours, but in 12 microseconds, everybody in the living room would be killed and there would be cracks in the walls and ceiling.

Or take a candybar. You eat it and then go on a two hour jog to burn it off. (or play Warcraft for 6 hours LOL) If the calories of the candybar were burned off not in 2-6 hours but 2-6 microseconds, you could do something wild like shoot a bowlingball over a city block.

Nukes work like this too. Twenty pounds of plutonium can be used slowly, lets say to heat a public swimmingpool over many months, or it can release all that energy in a millionth of a second, in which case it sucks to be anywhere near it.

You can take an old lady across the street in 30 seconds, letting her lean on you, or you can dispense the same amount of energy in a second by shoving her into traffic. The first is a boyscout's good deed, the other's a felony, but its the same amount of energy - its just the duration of its release that makes the difference.

Oklahoma City was such a disaster because the bomb was strong and the building was weak. Most of the energy that led to the destruction of the building wasn't caused by the explosion, but by the pancaking of one floor on the other, and so forth.

The OKC bomb was fast and that made it so deadly. It wasn't as much the amount of energy as it was the speed with which it was released. Driving the truck between two major cities would cost more energy than the bomb released, for instance. The US military drops bombs of that strength from planes routinely.

100 grams TNT releases 100 kcal. 100 grams of peanuts release 500 kcal. If you could burn the calories of peanuts as fast as those of TNT, it would be five times stronger as an explosive.

Would it hold up in court though? If you are a licenced reloader and plumber they ought to be able to sort out what belongs where.

The situation in the US is getting pretty insane, known fireworks hobbyists being blown out of proportion in the media as neighborhood terrorists.

Ever since the war on drugs its like your lawmakers are smoking some of that crack they're seizing.

ANFO is actually pretty slow as explosives go, it's the type of
explosion that breaks things as opposed to blow them away
