Right off the bat - you cannot make C4. C4 contains hexogen and you can't buy that one, you have to make it and for that you need to be a chemist, which you are not (or you needn't ask)

Flash powder. Holy cow DC do you know what you are getting into? The stuff is insanely sensitive to accidental ignition. Most pyrotechnics experts won't touch the stuff with a ten foot pole and those who do stick to quantities of 10 grams or less.

If an untrained person makes flash powder with any regularity, he can be certain to end up in the hospital or the morgue because of it, often on one of the first tries, during the mixing.

You mix it, it goes WOOMPH! and boiling skin drips off your face.

There's just 1/20 of a gram of the stuff in american firecrackers, even the loud ones. Picture what just ONE GRAM can do if shit goes wrong. A flashbang grenade, as used by SWAT teams, contains just a teaspoon of the stuff. Imagine a SWAT flashbang going off in your hands. You can imagine what it does to your ears, so heres what a teaspoon of flash does with your hand:





Flash is the last thing you'd want to do when you get into fireworks, not the first.

The DOD publication mentioned before, in its un-edited form, would be a reliable improvised explosives manual, yes, but what people fail to realize that its intended for soldiers in the context of performing a mission.

Soldiers are one thing you aren't, and that is expendable. The mission matters more than loss of life. If the A Team blows itself to kingdom come, cue the B Team to finish the job. And the green berets for whom the manual is written have explosives and demolitions training, and have actually seen the power of explosives firsthand.

The manual is written with that in mind. If you follow the instructions (well most of them) to the letter, the chance of you succeeding is greater than the chance of you getting killed trying.
Who in their right mind want to take THAT kind of risk in the persuit of kicks & thrills?


If you want to learn about pyrotechnics, responsibly, go to your bookstore and order the PiHKAL of fireworks, which is:

"Fireworks, the Art, Science and Technique" by Takeo Shimizu

That should be your introduction to pyrotechnics, not some deathtrap cookbook written by a 14yo about boiling bleach, breaking off matchheads and stuffing them in tennis balls and filing down aluminum tube.



We have a Shroomerite who is a pretty smart guy. He knew what he was doing. He lost a hand and a half to a bomb he wasnt even holding at the time it went off, many many months ago. He is in pain to this day and might need another surgery.

depends on what youre making.  i certainly wouldnt try to get into making c-4 or dynamite.

I agree with everything you said except about measurement of powders(flash, black, smokeless). Explosive powders are measured by the GRAIN not the GRAM. And just so you know, I'm a formal Marine trained in demolitions and I am licensed to pack explosives. While it's true the average person can't make C-4, with a little knowledge, a person can make Sym-tech(a form of RDX) with a few common household chemicals and a few not so common chemicals. And yes it IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS for people that don't know what they are doing.
