Is there a way to cultivate without all the supplies?
    #8609746 -

I know that you can buy the jars and make the cakes and stuff, but can you simulate a habitat outside where certain mushrooms can grow. For instance if cubensis like rotting oak tree, can you bring a piece of rotting oak tree in a moist shady spot and grow mushrooms? Im just really poor and I like experimenting so, is this possible?

if you can afford internet access, you can afford to do things right.

do some reading, and watch the "lets grow mushroom" videos on youtube.

Go to the drop-down menu at the top of every page.

Mushroom Info > Mushroom Cultivation FAQ > OUTDOOR CULTIVATION > Psilocybe Cubensis

Wham, seven articles to read.

Go to the top of the Cultivation board index. No, not the new post button, look more. See the "Mushroom Cultivation Archive?" See all those links for different subjects? See............Outdoor Cultivation? Hmmmmmmmmm

I asked this question once when I first came on here. I actually spent more time looking into ways to do shit without buying anything than I did on proper procedures.

You'll save yourself a lot of time and trouble if you do things right. There are plenty of teks for people on a limited budget. Even if you have to save up some money, it's worth it.

Its not a cheap hobby and in my personal opinion its more frustration than fun until you buy EVERYTHING and that includes ten million things that you do not even need and never even will ever use :dielaughing:

But to answer the question yes you can certainly grow cubes outside and plenty of them if you would like to after all they did come from outside to begin with in the 1st place, you will grow really ugly and usually slung or insect eaten mushrooms but mushrooms nonetheless, check out the advice on reading the teks for outdoor growing and best of luck  :goodluck:

Jars, Pressure cooker, home-made glove box and a syringe.  These are the things you cannot do without. Substrates are plentiful and free if you look in the right places.  You should be able to start a full 20-30 pint swarm for under $30 (US).

Thank you to the people that answered my question instead of being an obvious asshole. I was asking if you could SIMULATE a habitat, not grow them from jars and such. Again, thanks to those who answered.

filter patch bags, pressure cooker, and spawn/sub materials. buy ready made spore syringes and you can get results, granted they might be less then stellar, still easy to do under 100$ probably if you search craigslist and places like that for the pressure cooker. no free way of doing it really

no one is trying to be an asshole

what we are saying is: no, you won't be able to just get a chunk of rotten oak and grow cubes on it.

we want to help you, but to be successful, you need to invest *just* a bit of money, and *lots* of time in reading.

good luck

I guess, if that's really what you're after...

yes, it is possible.  However, it's highly unlikely that you'll cultivate anything except "weed" fungi and bacteria without using the procedures found all over this site.  And as for cubes, I don't recommend trying wood.  They don't like it.  Pretty much any product that is made from natural materials that is not wood, will serve as a decent (if not exactly ideal) substrate for cubes.

I was using cubes as an example, I really have NO idea what mushroom likes what. I was just annoyed that people were giving obvious jerk answers instead of telling me what to do. And I did look in the previous threads, there are some that haven't been posted in in at least 3 years. Anyway, thanks for the help, I think I'm going to go hunt in some cow pastures to make it easier to find a mushroom for starters, there really isn't much here in RI.

Save yourself time.  Find something of value that you are willing to trade and put it up on the Marketplace (forum here on the shroomery) in return for a spore print.  I'm sure you'll be able to pick one up in very short amount of time.  Then, you'll be able to start easily with a known species and strain.

Holy crap dude!  You have NO idea what mushroom likes what!?  You have to ask SPECIFIC questions.  How can ANYONE tell you what to do if you just ask hypothetical questions.  THIS IS A SCIENCE.  Very little guessing to this game.  I'm not trying to be a "Jerk" but many of us sit here for hours and try our best to give the most logical and accurate answers to questions asked.  But when you ask questions without knowing what questions to really ask, it is really frustrating.  If you say you are a "NOOB", then it's even more frustrating because No one here worth their salt didn't read, read, read, troll, troll, troll, search, search, search, before they asked their first question.  PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS OFFENSIVELY.  Just trying to give you some insight on why some people might give you "Jerky" answers.

This link might be useful, as it puts quite some bit of reading in one spot. Cuts down on you having to search quite as much for things you don't even know to search for.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/1910621#1910621

Don't be upset with anyone. I had my ass kicked when I first came here. Now I seem to be at least tolerated, and I understand where all the "old timers" are coming from.

Every day there are three "NOOBS" who probably still live with mommy, joining the site and asking VERY broad questions about mushroom, (actives mostly), cultivation. They obviously haven't read a comic book in quite awhile, let alone anything technical. They get very pissy when they are told to read, instead of having everyone type another how-to mushroom growing guide. Then they are never heard from again.

Then there are noobs who must jump all the fences in order to learn what it is that they are doing. It's a slower process than I originally thought. But over time you realize that the questions that you were asking have been answered, or are being answered and discussed right now.

You are not going to learn how to be a successful mushroom cultivator this month. Sorry, that's a fact.

I've read ALL the books that have ever been published on crime, all the ones that currently matter at least. I am not a forensic specialist. I do not practice crime scene analysis. Do I know more than you on the subject? Sure, but I've never done it.

No one is trying to be an asshole, but in reality, there are two kinds of noobs. I know what kind of a noob I am. What kind are you?

Reason for edit = used wrong word, should have been plural.
