hey good luck with agar. it's the way to go when starting spores. you might want to think about purchasing a eberbach blender to make liquid mycelium. it colonizes the jars alot faster. contact fungi perfecti for the blender, but there kind of spendy.

Skip the eiberbach. I use a standard mouth mason jar with a proctersilex blender when I do liquid mycelium. Put your agar in the jar and add 150 ml water and whir away for 5 secs. Add 5-10 cc's of peroxide and shake. The mycelium all float to the top so you can suck them up easy and innoculate.
Word of advice though...use it immediately because the ongoing break down of the peroxide will empty a good part of your syringe.
Hey Moe, use grain too and then it is easier to pour into trays

My experience has been that it?s much easier to keep small jars sterile.
Just my little piece of info.
Also, if you lose one jar, there is a smaller loss than if you had done a large one.

Just make your agar plates from ordinary beer.
Make sure it?s free from preservatives.

i have done the same thing, i have a few one gallon jars that i used for spawn but i recently made a one gallon pf cake, i will have to break the jar to birth the cake but it will be worth it. I used a 65 cc syringe to inoculate it with the pf strain that i had on agar. i mixed up the verm/rice and added a few cyups thistle just for the hell of it. i made the verm layer on top aboput 2 inches thick. i cooked that bitch for 40 mins at 15 psi. onces cool i inoculated it in 8 spots using about 8 cc's per hole. The thing is just about fully colonized now. it should produce just about a pound dry. its huge. i have no plans on casing the lil thing because cakes werent meant to be cased. it sure will be nice to have some pf's again, been messing around to much with those weak ass equadors just because i think there pretty.

On the agar pricing scheme:
I can only get it in kgs. I get
1 kg for aprox. US $ 28.
I guess that would break the 30$/pound
barrier since i can get it for $12/pound.

I live far far away though and the postal
system is soooo fucked up I can't even
get there to send anything.

Oh well cheap agar does exist and I don't
mean to brag even though I am...

I too have been on a quest for agar...

Best I have found is 1 pound @ 38.50

We can of course get it from the manufacturers in like singapore or somewhere like that.. Just have to have FOB destination West/East coast. Purchase it co-operatively and break and ship from the port city.
