smelly cake, but no visible fungus

I have a smelly cake, but it was all white and fully colonized when I took it out to birth. When I cut it up to find the rot, there were none. It was white the whole way through.

I was wondering if i should throw it out, or grow it in isolation?

i have the same thing on one of my cakes now. it looks fine but emits a dank bathroom mildew smell. all the other cakes smell fine (im growing in pop bottles, so no chance of contam to other cakes) but ive never had a cake do this before. maybe h202 can get rid of it.

I can't tell if it's a strong mushroom scent, or a bit sour. Because it's fully white, so it has a strong shroomy scent, but yet it's a little on the sour side.

It's one of three cakes that took forever to populate. from novemnber till january. 1 of them molded on Jan 15th. the other had the same oder problem. I cut it open to find no mold. But this third one I'm not ready to cut it and waste it.

what should I do??? :confused:

If it smells like vinegar then thats a bad thing but I'm confused because you say it's got a strong shroomy scent !  :confused:

And the other cake you cut in two if I understand you correctly isn't wasted. You can either birth that one as two seperate cakes or crumble and case.

If in doubt try birthing them seperately if thats possible.

P.S. This post shouldn't really be in the advanced forum !

if the cake reached full colonization then you will no doubt smell the mycelium, but the sour smell (or any smell other than that characteristic of the mycelium you are attempting to cultivate) is evidence of contamination. in your case(based on the described "sour" nature of the smell) i would say it is likely bacteria. in general, if you get any unusual smell you should isolate the culture, and quarantine other cultures eposed to the one under suspicion (eg: don't birth into chamber with healthy cakes and don't introduce new, uncolonized cakes into incubation chamber.)
next you will probably want to determine the vector of contamination (point at wich the contaminant was introduced) so you can eliminate the same problem from occuring again.
if you use these safeguards (mabey overkill, but saftey is key) you will help ensure no further loss

*saftey note: wen checking for contams by smell, wave air gently from opening of jar towards face and take small whiffs (only enough to gauge the scent, as you would with chems). do not put face over jar and breathe in deeply. some contams (or thier spores) can be dangerous to inhale. this also helps protect a potentialy healthy jar from being comtaminated by your breath.
