help with gallon jars

I just ran across about 15 gallon sized glass jars. I couldn't pass up the deal. The question is...... what in the hell can I do with them? Is there a tek that utilizes such large jars? With some, I plan to do the honeywater mycilium tek with a few......here's how. Before I do the tek, I will modify the jars by drilling a small hole in the bottom and inserting a hospital IV style withdraw with the actual withdraw point outside of the jar, but with the needle permanently inserted into the base of the jar. This way, I never have to open the jar, just flame the entry point (outside the jar) and syringe, then withdraw "solution". If anyone can help me with a tek for the other jars, I will greatly appreciate it. I can aquire about 5 jars a week for free, if any one is interested.

p.s.- does my idea for the no fault extraction tek sound like a good one?

you will run into all kind of contamination problems with jars that big-by the time if colonizes,so will all kinds of contams-

Ganja,

It can be done......... w/o contam's IF (NOTE big "IF") :

You have a good PC that will hold them & 15 lbs constant pressure.

Presoak your grain or seed 6 to 12 hours -- first

After soaking, rinse starch gunk off grain or seed

Drain grain or seed in a collander 30 - 40 minutes

PC @ 15 lbs for 90 to 120 minutes

Have a spanking clean spore syringe or liquid myc innoc

Work in a glove box or w/flow hood

Have filter disks installed

Keep jars in a clean dark envirorment between 78 & 86 F

They work just fine.

After all -- commercial places use them.
Except those commercial jars are usualy polycarbonate.

thanks man, i have built a good sized glove box to work in. what do you think about the honey water "tek"? (for lack of a better word)

Suggest light dry malt & dextrose 50/50. You can find that @ any home brew beer store -- cheapo.

1 fat teaspoon ea. to 3/4 quart water. PC 20 minutes, filter w/coffee filter paper, PC 20 minutes again.

Liquid innoc is a magnet for contams. Sterile...... is what it has to be. Or, contam city it is.

Will post a pic of a 1 gal getting down -- later. A tweeter is tweetering @ me now. I have to GO THERE. It beckons............... LOL

I cant wait to see pics; it sounds like you have some experience with this. Mycophile has me all excited with his bulk grow log and since materials are fairly cheap I figure I have to give it a try. If it goes bad I am only out a few bucks. I have been considering using filter patch bags for large amounts of rye spawn but the sealers are expensive. Have you used both and if so what are the advantages? Also do you have pics of that liquid inoculate that you mentioned above? It sounds like a great way to do a lot of grain quickly and beat out contams if you are carefull. Once again unless you are buying 10+ syringes you arent out that much $ if a few go bad during the learning process.

Oh yeah, What about a little peroxide in those jars to help reduce the chance of contams? Just a idea. Good luck.

I know a guy that used the gallon jars for terriums. One thing good about doing that is that if one cake gets contam, it won't spread to the other cakes since they are all isolated, one cake per jar.

i'll try it with a couple of the jars and post a write up on it. as for the others, i have a good idea now on how they will be used.....i'll keep ya posted.
