Teacher Fired, Accused of "Wizardry"

Florida religious nutters strike again! Yup, a related group of wackos to those that are trying to force-feed creationism, once again demonstrate their dunderheadedness.


Well, another Pasco County substitute teacher's job is on the line, but this time it's because of a magic trick.

The charge from the school district — Wizardry!

Substitute teacher Jim Piculas does a 30-second magic trick where a toothpick disappears then reappears.

But after performing it in front of a classroom at Rushe Middle School in Land 'O Lakes, Piculas said his job did a disappearing act of its own.

"I get a call the middle of the day from the supervisor of substitute teachers. He says, 'Jim, we have a huge issue. You can't take any more assignments. You need to come in right away,'" he said.

When Piculas went in, he learned his little magic trick cast a spell that went much farther than he'd hoped.

"I said, 'Well Pat, can you explain this to me?' 'You've been accused of wizardry,' [he said]. Wizardry?" he asked.


Seems the god-fearing school board has had enough of witches, sorcerers and wizards and other minions of satan and foes of Jesus.

Sad to say folks, but I am not clever enough to make these sort of stories up. Repeat after me: There is no danger to nonsensical beliefs.

Land 'O Lakes, Florida -- The stories in the news about inappropriate relationships between teachers and students have been overwhelming.  There was even a substitute teacher in New Port Richey who got in trouble after investigators say she had a relationship with an underage student.

Well, another Pasco County substitute teacher's job is on the line, but this time it's because of a magic trick.

The charge from the school district — Wizardry!

Substitute teacher Jim Piculas does a 30-second magic trick where a toothpick disappears then reappears.

Tampa Bay's 10 talked to the assistant superintendent with the Pasco County School District who said it wasn't just the wizardry and that Picular had other performance issues, including "not following lesson plans" and allowing students to play on unapproved computers.

Piculas said he knew nothing about the accusations.

"That... I think was embellished after the fact to try to cover what initially what they were saying to me," he said.

After the magic trick, Rushe's principal requested Piculas be dismissed.  Now, Piculas believes the incident may have bewitched his ability to get a job anywhere else.

"I still have no idea what my discipline involves because I've never received anything from the school district actually saying what it entails," said Piculas.

As a substitute teacher, the Pasco County School District considers Piculas to be an "at will employee." That means the district doesn't need to have cause for not bringing him back at all.

I lived in progressive Palo Alto, CA (near Stanford University) in the mid-80s. The local library had a guest speaker geared mainly towards children one Saturday morning per month. For the past few months they were exposing people to non-Christian religious beliefs. There was a Native American shaman, a Buddhist monk, a Hindu and coming up was a Wiccan.

Local parents came out of the woodwork protesting the guest speaker. "We don't want our kids being exposed to evil and perversions of nature," one concerned mother said.

The library was forced to cancel the Wiccan's lecture.

If you read the whole thing, it says that since he is a substitute teacher, the school district doesn't need a good reason to stop calling him in for work. So suing probably wouldn't do any good.

There is humanity and then there is Northern Pasco County, Florida.

Ever see the movie Deliverance?

A friends kid went to an away game at a north eastern Pasco County HS. She said, when the teams got in their lines to slap hands and say, "Good Game" afterwards, instead of slapping hands, the Deliverance kids spit at them, and their Deliverance parents egged it on. At their home games, some deliverance parents of that school also spit on the visiting guests in the bleachers.

Sadly, this wizardry firing story doesn't surprise me.

Where are you from? Did the parents get in on it and spit at visiting parents? :confused:

I played on the tennis team in HS in, Dupage County Illinois and no, no one ever spit at another team. We would have been kicked off the team, and possibly been suspended from school as well if we did that. We had to shake hands after the match. That was back in the 1980's though.

Is spitting at the other team the new millinium way to demonstrate sportsmanship now?:crazy:

Pasco County School Rules-

Toothpick magic tricks = "unfit to educate children":mad:
Spitting at other people = "Way to go!!!":cool:

None of this computes in my head. My grade school was packed with Christians and we had tons of kids do magic tricks for the yearly talent show.

Times are a changin!!!

Well, Americans are getting taller. Ever see the length of beds from Revolutionary War times, or the doorway heights? We live longer too, owing to greater intellectual understanding of microbes and medicine, not to mention knowledge of diet and vitamins. If people want to devolve into roly-poly retards stuffed with fast-food it doesn't negate very real evolving trends in mind-body development. Now, moral development is another matter. There have always been mystics, sages and saints while Romans were crucifying, Crusaders burning and butchering, Nazis rendering humans into soap, mattresses and lampshades and Americans napalming children in grass huts, lynching Black men and dragging drag-queens from trucks. Spiritual evolution apparently has manifested as a rare mutation since time immemorial, but unless the frequency of enlightenment catches up to intellectual-techological development, we are doomed.
