thought it might be helpful to post some "big lessons learned" while cultivating in this thread.

To get it rolling, I'd have to say that:
1) Use coarse verm and fresh BRF for cakes
2) Take tape off jar holes for faster colonization .. but watch air flow + contams.

make sure you have a good quality pressure cooker. Epecially when working with grains.

Was a Joke^ Never tried but seriously you shouldnt either. Haha.

Rule of Thumb Laws:
- Dont forget to spray your casing layer with water to keep it moist unitll pin development.
- Adding a casing layer makes a world of a difference to your yield when done properly to your bulk, dont be lazy and skip this step.
- Always shoot for a second flush, dont dump after only one flush it is a waste of work, second flushes can be great too. Third and forth are optional.
- Never harvest too early if you are concerned with your yield.
- Have patience, perfect timing for this hobby is essential for best results. One day can make a world of a differnce sometimes.

Don't use a heating pad. It will dry out substrates.

Tub in tub is a great way to keep your jars warm during colonization. Just put water between the tubs and drop in a fish tank heater. Do it a few days before inoculation so you can get the temp steady.

A small propane plumbing torch makes an amazing substitute for an alcohol lamp, keep it on low it's enough to do the job.

You want a cheap way to get into edibles just buy them fresh from the grocery store and clone them, you can trade your way up to more interesting edibles as you go.

You can get agar at Asian grocery stores


You don't need a drill to make holes in lids


It doesn't have to be tidy but it does have to be CLEAN

I asked this question as a noob to find out why people weren't using human feces and people said they didn't contain enough intact grains. But I took this as a challenge and survived off of nothing but nachos for a month. I even ate them so much that when I defecated my poo felt sharp and painful. However all the work was for not, since a grain fed human apparently cannot produce proper poo for growing mushrooms. You just can't do it. Plus it contaminated with necrotizing faceitus, it's what I get for shitty pasteurization procedures.

Seriously though;
-I have learned that automated setups are a must. I can't figgure how people have the time to FAE/mist so often and then get surprised when their poor methods have contammed.
-On that note I like monotubs. They use no power other than lighting and are set and forget. Personally I can't figure why anyone would choose a setup that has to be dicked with, other than cloning and strain manipulation.
-Buy a HEPA filter as well, I've never had anything contaminate after using a HEPA filter in the room. I mean it gets 99.99% of airborne contaminants out of the air OMFG why don't people recommend them more.
-Lids: don't just make stereotypical lids there are lots of much better ways to make lids on here and don't be too afraid to experiment if you know what you are doing. On that note don't be afraid of using silicone in them.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.
