Sushi 4 life. That's one food that I can (and did) eat everyday, that I could never get tired of.

Oh and I don't think anyones mentioned it in this thread so I figured I might as well throw it in there... it's really fucking good for you too.
Fish are of course very rich in omega-3s, which most Americans are SEVERELY lacking in. Raw fish is even better than cooked since it retains all of its nutrients.
Seaweed is basically a super vegetable. Super rich in many vitamins including B12 which is rare in land vegetables. Sea vegetables are also known to cleanse the body of toxic pollutants.. they contain high levels of alginic acid, which binds to heavy metals in the intestine and causes them to be eliminated.
And Rice is Rice.

Some people have expressed concern about too much mercury in fish. I say eat more seaweed.

Pretty sure sushi is one of the healthiest 'quick' foods out there.

It's nice that good sushi is becoming very prevalent in America.

I mean, being from Chicago there was always good sushi available.

But I live in Milwaukee now, which you would not think of as a culinary Mecca, but I can get good sushi from 5 or 6 places in a 10-minute radius.

It's really caught on in the last 10 years or so.

That's like asking how American beer compares to Belgian beer, or how Wisconsin cheese is compared to French cheese.

I'm sure there are some places that get it right and some that get it wrong.

I think the place Shroomism used to work was quite authentic, from what I recall him saying at the time.

And then there is Len & Bob's Sushi and Shakes where it's probably not that hot.

Sushi. I liked it but had a bad experience and haven't eaten it since.

I went to some expensive Japanese restaurant and ordered this boat thing with like 30 different kinds of sushi and split it with my friends. One kid turned green looking at it, one kid was picky, but knew what he was doing, and my girlfriend ate very little. OF course I decided to eat one of everything as fast as i could. I went to the bathroom and it left my stomach into the toilet.

I've tried pretty much all of it, but I'm sticking with fish. Why mess with success??

Well since almost all sushi places are run by immigrants its pretty much the same. The customs and the way it's served or the food it's served with is a little differnt though. As for the sushi itself, only the quality of fish is the noticable difference, but I'll give Japan their high-quality fish as long as us Americans get to keep our grade A beef and chicken (you never really appreciate American beef or poultry until you've been out of the country for a while)

I went to quite a few buffets. the sushi and other food was good... most of the time. Other times it tasted all dried up like it was sitting there all day. As much as I like Chinese buffets, I get my sushi from sushi restaurants

Well I've never been to Japan, but the place I worked at was pretty authentic... you can usually tell when 80%+ of the people that come in to eat regularly are asians. My boss was really chill but when it came to sushi that was serious business to him, he took that shit seriously. I think that's probably the biggest difference. He taught me that real sushi is not only perfect and delicious but is also a work of art, which is half of what sushi is all about.. the entire presentation has to be aesthetically pleasing.

Not to mention the whole deal with training.. like I said in Japan to be qualified to be called a sushi chef you must have been trained to make sushi for 5+ years. Here in America they don't give a shit, as long as you can make a roll. Also I imagine the ingredients are probably slightly different.. like they probably don't have volcano rolls and shit over there. A lot of rolls are probably stuff that was invented for American palettes, sort of like how Chinese food in America is different than real Chinese food. Also, Japan is an island surrounded by ocean.. so fresh fish is definitely much more abundant. So probably for the most part, it depends who is making the sushi and the quality of ingredients they use. Japanese sushi people won't fuck around when it comes to their sushi, where Bob the white guy probably doesn't have the same discipline.

I love sushi.
The best sushi I've ever had was in Japan. A Japanese friend of mine took me to a traditional Japanese sushi restaurant with some amazing sushi.
There was a line outside and we had to wait for an hour to get a table. So if you ever go to Japan, find yourself a real sushi-ya and have an amazing culinary experience.

If you want cheap sushi Japan is also the place to be. I've been to lots of kaiten sushi restaurants where the sushi is 100yen per plate. This is about 1$ American I think. When going to a real sushi place expect to pay up to 5 times more. The really special stuff is even more expensive.

Actually, American inventions like the California Roll (which they mistakenly call ANY type of sushi with avocado) have really caught on in Japan lately. By comparison, especially since almost ALL American sushi restaraunts are run by 1st generation Japanese immigrants, theres little deviation besides the quality of fish.

The Europeans, however, have thoroughly BASTARDIZED sushi.

Example A:

That is a very bad generalization. It's about as diverse a group as all Americans from Canada to Argentina.

True. What I probably should have said was Scandinavian hipsters have bastardized sushi

Well yeah.. I pretty much figured that alot of the popular rolls here caught on in Japan. My point was that (I'm guessing..) that a lot of the rolls you see on the menus here, were invented here for Americans. For example.. you wouldn't expect a roll that has cream cheese.. crab.. and are deep fried.. with 5 different kinds of sweetish sauces (volcano roll) to be something that was thought of in Japan.. but maybe.

Like at the sushi place I was at, there were over 75 different rolls on the menu.. many just variations of the same thing. But a lot of rolls were stuff my boss invented or creations that other people requested that he really liked and made into a regular thing and named them after different nearby areas. One really fucking good one was yellowtail, avocado, cucumber and jalapeno peppers mixed with lemon juice in the roll.. and spicy tuna on top. Sooo fucking good.

He also had this super fucking hot sauce.. and he made these spicy rolls at 6 levels of spicyness. He had a challenge that if you could eat 6 rolls at the highest level of spicyness in 5 minutes, that your entire meal was free.. up to 6 people. Only rule was you had to eat them one at a time. Many tried it thinking they could handle anything... none were ever able to complete it in the two years I was there. People would break out in complete sweats after just one.. most people could only finish two or three of them before breaking down.

I tried to get into sushi, however when eating a spicy tuna roll with a never ending chew, you tend to lose your appetite.

Your problem is you went to a place that doesn't use fresh fish.

Fresh tuna has a texture like a stiff gelatin.
