Bad sushi service. Am i a dick for walking out?

So i went to this place with my girlfriend for sushi, they took our appetizer orders brought us two waters and a cucumber salad.  About 5 min (completely reasonable) the waitress comes back bringing her soup and salad and I order 3 sushi rolls and my girlfriend gets teriyaki salmon.  About 10 min go by (still reasonable) she get her hot food and they walk away not even acknowledging me, or saying it will be just one more minute for your food sir.  Nothing of the sort.  So i figure it must be coming soon.  I watch her eat for 5 minutes and then my girlfriend flags down a waiter and asks if my food is coming.  He comes back 2 minutes later saying it will be just a minute or two.  Another 7-10 minutes go by, she is practically finished with her hot meal, and my cold sushi rolls still have not arrived.  I very calmly get up, wait for my girlfriend to grab her things, put on my jacket, and slowly walk out of the place with out paying. 

Am i a dick?

Thats how i felt.  Unfortunatley she got a good meal and i got fast food mexican across the way for $5.  I did eat some of her salmon though,  IT WAS GOOD!  Too bad their service sux.  At least i didn't have to pay i guess....

You could have complained and got it for free anyways, so you're not a dick at all.

I was in a similar situation at a restaurant once.  Except the slowest part of the service was getting the bill.  I gave the waiter a check please gesture twice and the second time I loudly said "check please!", because he was on the other side of the room.  After ten minutes I just left.  You'd figure they'd be eager to give you your bill.  I'll wait around for food, but I'm not gonna wait around to give them money.

I've done that exact same thing, only without gesturing or asking for the check. And I was running. :lol:

I figured this much.  But i don't know how much satisfaction i would have gotten listening to their lame ass excuses.  I figured it might have just put me in a worse mood then i was already in at the time.  So i just tried to stay calm, even giving them a chance to come after me, and i left.

If anything i would have thought the cold sushi rolls would have come before the hot salmon?  I don't understand it isn't like they lost the order ticket, they had my girlfriends down pretty well.  It is almost like they just didn't want me to get my food. Fuckers!

So you bailed because you couldn't eat at the same time as your girl?  She didn't have any problem eating without you.  :lol:

Total dick move.  If the food was good you should have waited and ate it.  7-10 minutes between courses is not unusual with japanese food service.  :nonono:

Well, it's not between courses. Food should NEVER come at separate times, but obviously fuck ups happen.

But shit, I'd be pretty pissed, especially if they tell me one or two more minutes and it takes ten and it's still not there.

I can't completely say you're a dick but at the same time I would have at least talked to the manager. I work in a restaurant and in some places a walkout is paid for by the waiter/waitress who were obviously not making your food and therefor shouldn't have to pay for your meal. I get the fact that they fucked up but if you didn't actually say anything more than once (even though you shouldn't have to) they probably wouldn't notice you hadn't gotten your food. Also even without your entree you still had apps and drinks.

I think the right thing to do would have been to make a huge stink about not getting your food and getting it compt. At least that way you are doing it legally. You can never go back to that restaurant. If they recognise you they could possibly have you arrested for theft (aka walking out on a bill). That would be a really  dumb thing to be arrested for and no amount of "but judge my food never came" could save you from that.

Again I can't say I agree with your decision... but I do have to give you props for admitting it.

As a cook... you shoudn't be able to say jack! You don't lose any money if people leave without paying their bill. Also (unless you work at a really slow restaurant) you can't tell me the kitchen never fucks up so things don't come out like they are supposed to... or not come out at all in some instances! As a cook you only know how things are supposed to work and hey maybe you're one of the good cooks who never fucks up but seriously you've got to know that isn't always the case!

Eh, if the place was packed, then yeah, thats kind of a dick move. Sushi always takes a long time to prepare, that should just be expected. Very rarely do I get my order in under 15-20 minutes. And now that I've started making my own sushi... I know what a bitch it can be to make it and make it look presentable. I would have just waited, could have been the best god damn sushi you've ever had.

Well i don't care and i hope that the waitress had to pay for my meal. Maybe she will pay more attention to her customers from now on.  Ultimately I am her responsibility and keeping me satisfied to a reasonable extent is part of her job. What difference does it make if she makes the food or not anyways?

I wouldn't have walked out if she would have actually delivered the food herself instead of having someone else bring it out, who didn't even acknowledge my presence or the fact that i may have ordered food as well.

I would not have walked out if they would have brought the food together at the same time 40 minutes later!  I don't mind the wait but watching my girlfriend eat and making her feel bad about eating in front of me was where i got pissed.  She kept offering me her food and i felt bad about taking a few bites.  It got to the point where she would offer and i would get mad and say 'NO i want the food i ordered!'

I would not have walked out if they were up front about the time situation when i first asked about my order not arriving on time.

The cook could have fucked up three times but she didn't have to have the food delivered for two people 15-20 minutes apart from each other! That is about the time it takes to eat a good meal.

And no i didn't get appetizers or drinks, we had water, the soup and salad was for my girlfriend as well.


Good point however with the legality issues.  I guess i was so mad i didn't give a shit or think once about it. And like i said before i wasn't dashing out of the place.  However I will definitely not be going in that place again.

So you walked out without even attempting to resolve the problem? I think you could have gotten a better result (ie the meal for free and you get your sushi) if you would have just taken the time to actually try to find out what was going on. Talk to the manager, ask straight up whats going on, do something.

I guess i should of.  But in the end i think it would have fired me up even more.  They had their three strikes and i was outa there.

I guess i am not the kinda guy who want to rant and rave and make demands and make someone feel like shit in a public place.  I kinda just wanted to be done with the whole situation and have the waitress figure out her mistake on her own.
