size vs. potency?

what can anyone tell me about this... i've read much about whether to pic mushrooms when they are smaller/closed veils because they are more potent, but i have also read that the amount of potency loss is negligible comparatively to how much weight can be gained. anybody have any proof other than personal experience? or what is the general consensus?

a few cakes kicked out some really big mush comparatively to the rest of what came out of the cake... figured they could get big if they wanted to, they still got picked before the veils broke, but wet weights were 31.1, 24.9, and 21.1... pretty big chunkers. There a problem with letting them get this big, or is there good reason for picking them before they get like that...

I always harvest before the partial veil tears completely off the cap unless I need to make prints then I wait till the cap flattens out

So do I but I must confess its just a matter of aesthetics with me,I'm just a snob :snub:

I would rather have pretty mushrooms over ugly mushrooms so I pick early(Sometimes too early) just to make sure I avoid risking upturned caps or spores everywhere.

As far as potency goes though I have never really seemed to notice a difference either way

I'm looking forward to hearing a few more opinions on this though even though it is a bit of a situation

Per my understanding smaller caps are more potent per gram, but they still contain less over all Psilocybin/psilocin.

Mushrooms don't get less potent when they mature, they get more potent; it's just not by very much so the most efficient use of energy for the shrooms (energy vs. psylocybin) is to only grow until about when the veils are tearing.

Therefore: Smaller mushrooms are more potent by weight because their ratio of actives to mass is greater, but the total amount of actives in a bigger mushroom is usually bigger, just not per gram.

The logic I have heard behind picking the large ones early on is that the large fruits ,especially the huge ones,will rob all the nutrients from a small substrate......as far as potency ,I have no idea.

also your not improving your overall yield by having huge mushrooms from my understanding you reach 90% of your yield potential at the harvest of the second flush.

so you should be just ruining your bang for your buck.

RogerRabbit says that bit about 90% of yield or better by 2nd flush.

Roadkill and others have said with huge strains like Orissa India leaving all pins on a pf cake will result in the same yield as plucking all but say 2 or 3. This is the same idea. (I think Roadkill said this lol)

Since the fruiting bodies only grow by the absorption of water and swelling of the cells, if you let a mushroom mature longer and get bigger, it will just lose more weight when it dries and so they dry weight is the same. (in theory).

As for potency, the actives are still produced while the fruit is growing so picking later would be better. But it's generally understood that not much psilocybin is produced after the veil breaks, so waiting longer just means you get spores everywhere. Hence, a lot of people pick just before the veil breaks.

This is not true, the fruiting bodies don't grow merely by absorption of water.

speaking from experience... i could never tell a difference between those that were small or large.... other than the large ones brought me more WEIGHT!!!! and if your growin with poo and straw.... weight is what matters not potency... cause they are going to be potent. The only way i would pick with the veil just breaking is if i was making a print.

also this gets you in the discussion of potency which im not going to argue about.... but once youve experinced shrooms on poo or bulk sub.... over shrooms on pf cakes..... there is just a world of difference.

any who.... imo go for the weight and let them mature!!!!

I just wanted to throw my experience in here as well. When I first started this hobby I was really anxious and picked them right away, just as I saw a single tear in the veil. I was worried about them rotting or something before I would have the chance to pick them.

Now having learned some patience from mycology, I will sometimes wait a full 12 hours after I see those first tears in the veils. I would imagine this depends on the strain. So from my experience, it has been ONE of the factors, that has increased my yields. At least anecdotally.

As always patience is a virtue in this field.

How a mushroom fruit grows in size

Do not mix up aborts with immature mushrooms.

Test results(they are somewhere on the site) showed that aborts contain more actives per gram than mature fruits.

That would mean that 1.5 gr of aborts would make you trip harder than 1.5gr of a mature shroom but it might take 20 aborts to make up 1.5 gr while those 20 aborts if they had become mature shrooms they would have weighed maybe 15 gr. And you will trip a lot harder eating 15gr of mature shrooms than 1.5 of aborts.

I have yet to see any test results determining if immature but non aborted shrooms are more powerful than mature ones.

As of now the only REAL reason we have to pick shrooms unopened is to avoid the mess caused by spores and also, for some people, make them more palatable as the texture of opened caps can be dissagreable.

No Potency?

Hello @LL Cheers from Michigan! I have been lurking around a few shroom sites for months now and this is my first post here! I need some advice or reinsurance from you experts! I have had grate success with most of my projects; my first PFTek jars started colonizing in a converted refrigerator the middle of February, I put the first to reach 100% colonization in fruiting environment the middle of March! Taste tested a few weeks later! Here is my problem little to No Potency? I have four strains growing and have sampled 3 of them in this order- Alacabenzi, B+, Golden Teacher, and my Hawaiian has not fruited yet. What’s the deal? I think I’m doing everything right in every step from start to finish but No trippy? Taste testing fresh/wet and crispy DampRid dry, 1 gram 2 grams nothing but a little glow going! One night I consumed about 4 grams! Nothing special happen! Recently ordered - Penis Envy from shroomery.org upon recommendation. All but one spore syringe was ordered from this site. Grown approximately 20 dried grams now and No one’s is tripping! HELP What Can I DO?

Sorry to hijack this thread but I have done multiple site searches for strain potency and have found little info! Maybe you all might like to see some more pictures from my projects! Oh ya dang I also have questions about every one of my rye grain jars colonizing about 40% then turning into what I would call Syrupy and smelling like rotten apples?

I’m 36 165lbs and somewhat of a DeadHead back in the day, so yes! Going from memory a cap and a few little stems always did the trick that’s why I’m so frustrated lots of time money and  hard work great tasting but disappointing trip!
