Active ingredient content vs. fruit size.

Has anyone seen any literature about fruit size and potency. It seems generally accepted that pins contain psilocybin, and this is (possibly) a defensive mechanism to ward off animals from eating them. At which point does the mushroom stop producing psilocybin, and for that matter does more mass of mushroom mean more psylocybin or is the psylocybin produced early in the fruit's life cycle just distributed over a larger mushroom as it grows larger.

It stops producing it during sporulation, probably to reserve energy. I've heard the same thing about size/potency but nothing I would consider very credible; I am certain one could have a smaller fruitbody with less % psilocybin. Just a general trend people have seemed to go by; doesn't mean it has no validity at all.

Most likely there is a hormone or another chemical that downregulates its production right before sporulation; usually for these types of compounds it seems to be at the tryptophan intermediate step during the Shikimic acid pathway, but that's just a general trend; it could be anywhere in the cycle. I'd like to read some specifics on Psilocybin but can't find anything.

So if the production of psilocybin ceases at sporulation, (I assume this is where the practive of harvesting when the veil rips originates) and you harvest when the veil tears (since the production of active ingredients ceases and this is what we are really after) can you expect a greater yeild of active ingredient / fruit mass. Here's that question again without all the thought process added in. If you harvest when the veil rips can you expect a higher ratio of psilocybin / fruit mass than if you waited, or will the necessary nutrients in the substrate be used up resulting in increasingly LESS potent fruits?

More % by mass if you pick it when the veil rips, but I wouldn't assume by that much. This is just because the shroom will still grow a bit not producing psilocybin, and *some* of the actives could break down due to enzymatic destruction (but this shouldn't be substantial, at all, unless we're talking a long time.)

All told, I don't think it's extremely important when you pick it, before or after; just don't let it go too, too long.

It's pretty much accpeted that you harvest right before the veil rips to harvest the most miligrams of psilocybin possible. It may be true to some degree that smaller shrooms are more 'potent' or have a higher psilocybin ratio, but not high enough to justify picking early, since it's overall amount of psilocybin we're after (i.e. total miligrams), not high psilocybin ratio (or 'potency')
