I'm gonna buy a drum
    #8153763 -

During some recent trips I've really gotten into playing percussion on whatever surface is available...my roommate actually has a full drumkit in our apartment, bass drum, floor tom, rack tom, snare, ride cymbal and a hi-hat. I like playing around on that but I like pounding my hands against surfaces more I think. So i think I'm going to buy this drum I saw a guy playing when I was at Chapel of Sacred Mirrors sometime, it's called a cajon:

You sit on top of it, and drum on the front surface of it. Now, I've never owned a hand drum, I'm not particularly skilled at hand drumming so I guess what I want to know is, if I buy one of these for $100 dollars as an instrument to teach myself hand drumming on, is that foolish? Should I start with some other kind of drum? This one just seems like so much damn fun.

Hand drumming is fairly easy.
If you have a heartbeat you can play a drum.
look on youtube for drum circles and try to play along with them.
Remember that you dont want to play the exact thing that someone else is playing, you want to blend what you are playing with everyone else.

Start on a decent djembe. Then get that after you learn your djembe. Thats fun as a secondary thing to mess around on, but if you want to learn how to hand drum get a proper goat skin djembe - I'm sure you can find one where you are at for cheap.

Since you have other drums at your disposal anyway, go ahead and get that one to play with. Looks fun as hell :smile2:

I've been eyeing a cajon for so long now.

However I've been thinking that perhaps a conga or djembe would be more portable jic, but the cajon seems best suited for me, I love the sound.

As soon as I free up some cash, I will get one.

$100 is nothing when it comes to drums/equipment. I just spent $100 on a used cymbal stand and a 360 degree clamp.

cool man that looks like an exciting instrument. Rhythm keeps the balance, and nothing is more sexy then banging drum.

I talked to my friend Lucy today and she said she has a custom dyed awesome djembe at her parents' house that hasn't been used in years and she's willing to just give it to me for as long as I want as long as I'm going to be using it...so I might just go with that for a little bit.

Get..... a...... Djembe.

And bring it to the NE gathering. I'm bringing mine.
The more drums the better. I'm hoping to get an honest to god drum circle going this year.
Hand drumming is relatively easy if you have ANY sense of natural rhythm. And almost everyone does. I'll teach you everything I know. You'll be an expert in 2 hours.

But you can't go wrong with a hand drum. Just make sure it's authentic goat skin head and rope tuning if at all possible, you don't want that synthetic crap .. although they still get the job done. There are few things in life more healing and satisfying than a good drum circle. A cajon is good and fun, and they have a wonderful sound... but for just starting out and experts alike I would highly recommend a djembe as they are much more portable (depending how big it is I guess.), and never get old. Like someone else said above, a cajon would be good for a secondary drum and messing around with.. but every hand drummer should have a djembe or five in their arsenal.
A quality djembe will last your entire life and your children's life if you take good care of it. (and change the head once in a while..)

This is my baby.. handmade and hand carved in Mali, west Africa.. from purple heart wood and goat skin head... it cost me $120, with a case.
Best $120 I've ever spent.

Wow 120$ isn't bad at all, I've seen some for well over 400$, I saw a really cool one at the Smithsonian in DC.

Yeah, if you buy an authentic hand drum at a festival or a retail place or otherwise, you can expect to pay a lot... double or more what it should cost. But I found it on the interweb straight from the source... YAY for the interweb!

Do you have a microphone? You should sample me some drum sounds. :boobs:

Not a good one. It wouldn't do the sound any justice anyway..
The amazing sound of djembes goes to shit on a bad mic... but I do have some links of videos of a drum gathering I was in a few years ago..

and this is what the bass does to those shitty mics during main circle:

Here ya go OMR.. some videos from the same drum gathering (paralounge.. a drummer's paradise) from last year. On a smaller scale... so should give you a good feel of how people work off each other with their own individual beats that feed off each other and contribute to the collective sound

I'll definitely be getting my ex's djembe to keep for as long as I want before the NE Gathering so hopefully I'll have some skills by the time I arrive.  Definitely looking forward to drumming with you, Shroomism!  I plan on exploring percussion with a little bit of psilocybin or LSD thrown in as time draws closer. :dancing:
