Tabla drums!
    #1197638 -

Does anyone know how to tune these things?? It didn't exactly come with an instruction manual...  :smirk:

Also, any artists, songs, books or anything like that anyone would recommend? I really want to learn how to play well, but there's no one around to teach me, so I'm going to learn them myself.

**drools**
one day ill own my own set of those babies. Right now i practice on some recently aquired Bongos. They get the job done, but after seeing those babies in action... there is no substitute.

I hope you find someone that could guide you or perhaps give you some pointers on the usage of the those fine instruments... a tabla master would be handy.

Well I've had them for a few days now and my hands are hurting a little bit as they callus over. I still have not nearly touched on the wide array of sounds you can make with them... I'm used to regular drums, using sticks, so I'm going to have to keep practicing at it to use my fingers and what-not. It's hard as hell to find any good free tabla instructive type things on the internet! :frown:

Yeah I have played the drums since I was about 7 or 8 years old... My dad played and taught me some basic stuff and I taught myself from there. I have had a few drum sets, but at present I have just the tablas.

ANY information you could pass along regarding tablas would be great... I'm pretty much 'in the dark' on technique, tuning, etc...

Namaste.

I am a big Tool fan and I guess Danny Carey has received tabla drumming guidance from Aloke Dutta. Aloke is supposedly a master of tabla drumming. I ordered his latest cd about a month ago but I still haven't recieved it. He offers a book and a cd of tabla instruction and practice. His website is http://www.alokedutta.com

I've got a djembe which is similar. You can get different sounds out of it by hitting diff. spots on the head like close to the rim, and in the center. I like to have one hand hitting the center, and one hitting the rim. You can get wacky sounds out the one on the left by moving the wooden tongs that are held in place by the goat skin straps. I recomed to get blazed or very lightly shroomed and start a drum circle with some friends.
