Tablas
    #5123209 -

Hello everyone.I got a set of tablas for christmas and I was wondering about the tightness of the head on the bayan.Mine seems a little loose but I dont have another bayan to compare it to.I have to tap the drum head very quickly and lightly to get a noise out of it.When I tap the head with normal pressure it makes a dead noise.Anyone have any info on this?Anyone on these forums have tablas or know anything about them? Thanks

Cheers

We're talking about the bass component here, right?
Mine feels loose to me as well. When I hit it deep and full (open tone) it kind of buzzes and sounds like it rattles a bit.
I'm perplexed as to whether my bayan is just shitty, or if it's supposed to sound like that.

Thanks for posting this. I've had this little querry on the back burner for quite some time now.

Yes I'm talking about the bass drum.Mine does that same buzzing noise and has a flat sound.I may just not have the right technique down to striking the drumhead.Maybe someone can shed light for us.I don't see anyway to tune or tighten the head on the bayan. The book that came with them doesn't explain, and I haven't fount anything that goes that far in depth yet on google.Post a picture of yours and Ill post a pic of my set on monday. The camera isn't here right now.

Cheers

I've heard that with the bayan you're supposed to try and hit it precisely and cleanly.
Don't drag you're fingers, etc. Opposite of playing Djembe for instance, where you can really take advantage of the vibratory subtleties of the skin.
As for for tuning, I don't see anyway to tune it on the fly really. All the straps are all tied off at the bottom.
Here's a suggestion though. If you've got enough space between those straps, try experimenting with sticking some pencils or batteries in there. (like tuning pegs)
That should tighten up the straps. And tightened straps results in a tightened head usually?
Come to think of it, i'm gonna mess around with this myself and get back to you.

Well it seems the head on my Bayan as tightened up and loosened up on its own free will.I believe it has to do with the humidity in my room. When I had my window open the other day,my drum head was very loose and fla sounding.Right now with it warm and dry in my room, the head is very tight and has a beautiful tone when hit properly.
