So I'm getting a drum set.

A friend of mine just moved into a new single bdrm apt. and can't fit her drums in there. So she offered to loan them to me while she is living there. I have never played an actual drum set, just hand drums. I just started playing guitar about 3 months ago and I'm having alot of fun. My question is, should I put off learning the drums until I learn more about the guitar? Is it going to be confusing trying to learn both at the same time?

While it is true that learning a second instrument is always easier, drums and guitar are quite different (for ovbious reasons I would think) .  I can't really tell you what to do because I can't measure your musical apptitude, all I know is that I would play both personally.  I've been playing guitar for 5 years and drums for about 2.  I find learning other instruments really helps me songwrite because I can take what i've learned and apply it to different sections of the song.  It may be frustering at first because skills are so limited, but given time and pratice its possible to play x amount of instruments as long as pratice is alloted to each one evenly.  It also depends on what kind of drummer you wish to be.  I myself strive to play metal so my training requires lots of stamina building excercises.  Or you might want to play rock or blues, which is not as demanding and can be learned quicker.  Who knows, maybe the drums will help you with the guitar, or visa versa.  I say go for it :smile:

just practice both!
you'll learn more about music and it will be good for both your guitar and drum skills :laugh:

If I only had the (soundproof)room for a drum kit I would buy one in a second :cool:

yep, pretty much what everyone else has been saying. learn both, you will get a better understanding of music itself playing and hearing different instruments.

treat each instrument differently, they all have different roles and abilities.

If you are serious about trying to learn drums, then learn your rudiments, otherwise you are just an annoying fuckwad beating on things, and most likely with the white-person 1 and 3 emphasis.
Once you have spent about a year, practicing rudiments atleast 2 hours a day, on only a snare, then you can add kick and hi-hat.
After about 3 years of that, then you can add 1 tom, a ride, and a crash.

I can think of no better way to inspire an aspiring musician then tell him he has to beat a snare drum for a year before he can really play a drumset. I would absolutely love music after that engaging first year :smirk:

hmm that doesn't sound like the most fun way to learn drumming. I'm sure it's a solid way, but I would use the whole basic drum kit to start with so you get a feeling for the whole thing and start incorporating different drums with each other. He already has some experience with rhythms from the hand drums etc.
Anyway, the best way is probably get a few lessons on drum basics :thumbup:

ha, I agree with that, everyone does think they can play hand drums, but I didn't claim to be a professional, just that I have some experience with them, or rather, some rythem.

Anyways, the girl who is loaning me the drums has offered to show me some things as well, so I'm gonna give it shot with her help. I play the guitar for about an hour each day, so this just means I'm gonna have to clear more of my schedule for musical learning.  :smile:
