Crystal has the simplest interface I've ever used. I also think it's by far the most versatile free softsynth out there.
One of my favorites right now is z3ta+ but it eats up memory like crazy. Can't even run more than one instance of it when sequencing.

If you can only aford 2 vst synths get Native Instruments FM7 (expanded with all the libraries around, it can't be beaten) and Arturia Minimoog V. Of course, there are a lot of good vst synths, some of them capable of strange stuff and esoteric sounds (impOSCar, Moog Modular V, ARP 2600v, Oddity, CS-80v) but these two have the most versatile collection of "musical" and "usable" sounds. I've got a lot of synths an I found me using these 2 the most. If you are more in the trance reign maybe z3ta+ or ReFx Vanguard could be better for you. Not to say that FM7 or MinimoogV can?t do trance but these 2 can do it way easier (much harsher sound than the other ones).

Two more FREE VSTs that sound amazing:
Synth1 : http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-SanJose/5005/softsynth/index.html Yeah the web page is in Japanese. Just scroll down to where you see the file synth1.zip and grab that. Features: 2 oscillators, with FM, Ring modulation and Sync. 4 Filters (LP12/24/HP12/BP12) with Distortion. 2 LFOs. EQ, Tempo delay, Stereo chorus, Flanger. Mono/Poly/Legato modes. Arpeggiator 16 voice polyphonic.
Invader : http://www.e-phonic.com/vstplugins/ The sound from this little bugger is unbelievably good. Very original sounding, too. I don't know why this isn't listed on KVR but it should be. The only thing that could make it better is an LFO or two. If you need a good VST drum machine, grab Drumatic from the e-phonic site too. It's an 808/909 emulator and does the job nicely.
I had these two on my PC for about a year now and completely forgot about them. Now along with Superwave and Crystal they're about all I use anymore. I hardly even touch my commerical plugins anymore...
