Welcome to my Metal music guide! Which has now become the SHROOMERY COLLECTIVE METAL GUIDE. I wrote this guide as a result of my unconditional love for metal, I believe it is one of the most diverse and inspirational forms of music that exist Which many people do not really understand the full depth and magnitude of. While classifying music into genres and subgenres is hard and sometimes pointless, as many bands span several genres or transcend barriers... it DOES help to categorize them better, and as there are about 500 different sub-genres of METAL alone, I've broken it up into sections divided by sub-genre to make it easy to find and group similar bands. This thread is intended to be a general overview of all the greatest genres of metal, from the oldest school to the newest of tech metal. As such this thread covers a VERY VAST SPECTRUM of metal, and even a complete noob to the genre should be able to find something they like.
This is a perpetual work in progress.. Please feel free to suggest bands I might have missed or you feel should be added to this evolving list!
**NEW!!** Youtube links to different songs under each band.. easier than ever to sample different bands!
*************************************************************** PROGRESSIVE METAL
This is a VERY diverse genre with an extremely broad range of influences. Progressive metal (sometimes shortened to prog metal) is a fusion genre; a mixture of progressive rock and heavy metal. Progressive metal blends the powerful, guitar-driven sound of metal with the complex compositional structures, odd time signatures, and intricate instrumental playing of progressive rock. Some progressive metal bands are also influenced by jazz fusion and classical music. Like progressive rock songs, progressive metal songs are usually much longer than standard metal songs, and they are often thematically linked in concept albums. As a result, progressive metal is rarely heard on mainstream radio and video programs.
The origins of progressive metal can be traced back to progressive rock bands from the late 1960s and early to mid-1970s such as Yes, Pink Floyd, Emerson, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Focus, Renaissance, The Alan Parsons Project, early Queen, Kansas, Atomic Rooster, Uriah Heep and Rush. ***************************************************************
OPETH - The greatest band of all time. Listed twice because. From Stockholm, Sweden, formed in 1990...Whilst firmly rooted in Scandinavian death metal, Opeth has consistently incorporated influence by progressive music, folk, blues rock and jazz into their always-lengthy compositions. Many compositions include acoustic guitar interludes and strong dynamic shifts, as well as both growling and clean vocals. Opeth's distinct sound mixes heavy metal with acoustic passages, while also incorporating elements of progressive metal and progressive rock. The name Opeth was taken from the book Sunbird (1972) by author Wilbur Smith, and was originally spelled Opet. In the book, Opet is the city of the moon. Windowpane, Bleak, Deliverance, The Drapery Falls, The Grand Conjuration, To Bid You Farewell
ATHEIST Atheist are a technical death metal band from Florida, founded in 1984, whose music combined metal riffs with subtle latin music arrangements and elements of jazz. Their second album, Unquestionable Presence, released in 1991, has been regarded by some critics as one of the most influential technical death metal albums of all time. Video: Unquestionable Presence, Piece of Time
CYNIC Founded in Miami, Florida in 1987.. Cynic is a progressive metal band with heavy jazz fusion elements. They began with a traditional death metal sound, but evolved into a highly complex, experimental, and extremely technical form of metal after several demos. While their music is very jazzy, they are largely responsible for helping influence much of the roots of technical death metal. They released 1 album in '93 and disbanded for 15 years or so. They recently released a new album (Traced in Air - 2008) that is classic Cynic style with amazing production quality, very fucking excellent record. *Highly recommended.* Evolutionary Sleeper, Integral Birth
MASTODON Mastodon is a Grammy-nominated metal band from Atlanta, Georgia. They are usually classified as a heavy metal group, with clear hardcore influences on the band. Mastodon's style includes heavy and often quite complex and technical guitar riffs, complex, jazz-influenced drumming, odd time signatures, and long, melodic instrumental interludes, which are all common aspects of the progressive metal genre. The band's fans have humorously dubbed the genre 'whalecore', in reference to their 2004 album Leviathan. Videos: Blood and Thunder, Seabeast, Iron Tusk

DREAM THEATER American progressive metal band formed by three students at the Berklee College of Music in the mid 1980s under the name Majesty. There are few who really play technical metal, and fewer still who can mix dizzying musicianship while keeping the songs as songs, rather than disjointed jam sessions. Videos: Insect, Cloud Constructed

*************************************************************** DEATH METAL
An extreme form of metal mainly inspired from thrash metal of the early 80s.. characterized by blast beats, insane double bass, growling vocals and fast complex distorted guitars tuned low.. most songs focus on the darkside of life.. usually associated with death and satan and disgusting things.. but often containing philisophical insights and political statements.. a very misunderstood and underappreciated genre altogether . But death metal was never meant to be popular..it's not marketable as a trend..and that is part of it's success in not being whored and tainted by the music industry. So it remains largely underground.. with a loyal and dedicated following.
"Grinding dark, brutal sounding music that shatters windows and makes ears bleed. This music has very fast solos, insane drumming, demonic vocals, and heartpounding bass" ***************************************************************
OPETH - THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME.

MORBID ANGEL Morbid Angel is a Florida-based band also considered to be one of the godfathers of death metal along with Death, Possessed, Obituary, and Cannibal Corpse. If you enjoy this genre, they are a must have. Songs are quite complex in arrangement, owing to the considerable skill of guitarist Trey Azagthoth and drummer Pete Sandoval. Where the Slime Live, Spheres of Madness, Rapture
POSESSED One of the other early pioneers of Death Metal. They released their landmark debut album Seven Churches in 1985, predating Morbid Angel and Death. The record combined black and thrash metal, and added the first known growled vocals, although not as guttural as the death metal growls of today. After releasing a couple lesser known albums, Possessed disbanded. Possessed will always be remembered as a legendary band in eyes of any hardcore death metalhead. The Exorcist, Fallen Angel
DEICIDE One of the most evil bands to ever exist. Yes, even more evil than Slayer. Their riffs are primarily in Harmonic minor, and as you guessed it.. deicide means 'the killing of god'.. their lyrics are primarily anti-Christianity. All American brutal death metal. Trifixion, Scars of the Crucifix, Fuck Your God
SUFFOCATION Suffocation, easily the most plagiarized death metal band, fused the predominant rhythmic styles of death and speed metal with grindcore song constructions to start a new subgenre of music, that of Death-Grind (death metal + grindcore). IMMOLATION Veteran New Yorkers Immolation deal exclusively in old-school, heads-down, twisted death metal. Nary a melody or a subtlety to be found, but uncompromisingly brutal and intense, both musically and lyrically. The band has scarcely changed over the years, as the style is pretty much the same from one album to the next. World Agony, Harnessing Ruin
OBITUARY Obituary play unadulterated brutal Death-gore Metal. The band started out in Florida in 1985 as school band Xecutioner. They combined hyper-speed guitar riffing, complex arrangements and guttural screams to create a bleak and violent soundscape that defined a genre. Unlike their peers though, Obituary avoided the more common trappings of this style of music shunning the Satanic bent of the lyrics and the breakneck pace of the dual guitar assault. Don't Care, Insane
CANNIBAL CORPSE Fast, aggressive, complex, with violent lyrics. Their albums are banned in several countries, including Germany. Brutal, cookie-cutter death metal IMO. Hammer Smashed Face, Make Them Suffer

SIX FEET UNDER Six Feet Under was formed initially as a side project of lead singer Chris Barnes, but later became his full-time band. Six Feet Under lyrics are apocalyptic and brutal, though Chris Barnes' lyrics are somewhat less brutal than that of his past. Many Six Feet Under songs are politcally keen and advocate among other things legalization of marijuana, overthrow of capitalism, and even anti-war sentiments. Many believe that his newer lyrical material are metaphors for the state of humanity. Deathklaat, Shadow of the Reaper, Dead and Buried LAMB OF GOD Lamb Of God is a five-piece progressive death metal band from Richmond, Virginia, USA. (some argue the band is "nu-metal", but they have all the elements of death metal.) The band was formed in 1994. DYING FETUS Dying Fetus is a metal band formed in 1991 in Maryland, United States. Lyrics-wise, the band dabbled with the usual gory death metal subject matter on their early albums, but by 2000?s Destroy The Opposition they had practically completely shifted to political (left-wing) lyrics, mostly consisting of aggressive critique addressed towards things such as religion, corporations, consumerism, racism and war. The resulting album, Conquering The Throne, is ferocious, brutal old-school death metal, featuring some pretty intense drumming from Tim Yeung. Though short, the intensity never lets up throughout, and fans of speedy death metal should love this. I, Monarch, The Victorious Reign, Bringer of Storms
MACABRE Macabre is an extreme metal band Chicago, Illinois.. formed in 1985, and have never had a line-up change. They blend thrash metal, death metal, and grindcore (sometimes with nursery rhymes and folk melodies) to form their own unique style self-dubbed "murder metal". Lyrically, they have a strong focus on serial killers, mass murderers and a touch of sick gore humor. Nightstalker, Vampire of Dusseldorf, Drill Bit Lobotomy
*************************************************************** TECHNICAL / PROGRESSIVE DEATH METAL
A further refinement and evolution of death metal - Technical, or "progressive" death metal is a narrow, but well-defined and influential sub-genre of death metal that focuses on very complex rhythms, riffs and song structures, and oftentimes brutal blinding speed. As death metal bands evolved, some experimented with elements from a variety of genres. As a result of such experimentation, exemplified by Suffocation, Cryptopsy and Gorguts, the subgenre of technical death metal established itself as a complex and varied musical style. Death, Morbid Angel, Monstrosity, and Atheist are mainly credited with pioneering this sub-genre. ***************************************************************

CRYPTOPSY Cryptopsy is a brutal death metal quintet from Montreal, Quebec. The band's 1996 release, "None So Vile", is considered to be landmark technical death/grind album. DECAPITATED Decapitated are a brutal death metal band from Poland. Their albums combine speed and power with brilliant results. Acclaimed not just by the media and their expanding hordes of fans but by their peers as well (such as fellow Poles Vader). The band also have one other advantage in their age, the eldest member (Vogg, Guitars) is 22 and the youngest (Vitek, Drums) is only 18, this has given them a major boost in their popularity amongst the younger death metal fans and has given them a worthy live reputation for high velocity performances. Surgical precision and brutal technicality define their sound. Spheres of Madness, Winds of Creation
INTO ETERNITY Into Eternity is an extreme metal band from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. The band employs a wide range of elements across the metal spectrum, including classic or melodic metal styling, thrashing riffs, power metal-style clean vocals, high to low-pitched death growls and black metal shrieking, fast tempo death metal drumming with blast beats and sometimes interwoven with acoustic guitar playing, as such their music is hard to categorize, but I feel it fits best under progressive death metal. Severe Emotional Distress, Time Immemorial, Timeless Winter
GOJIRA formed in 1996 in Bayonne, France. The band was known as Godzilla until 2001. Gojira plays a technical and rhythmic style of heavy metal with precision drumming, unusual rhythm patterns, start-and-stop riffs, and breakdowns. Gojira has also been known to incorporate textured atmospheric elements and instrumental songs into their music. *************************************************************** THRASH / SPEED METAL
A Sub-Genre of Metal made popular during the 80's originally by bands such as Motorhead and Venom. Metallica then took the style and made it into a more popular and prominent style. Other bands through the Thrash ages are Overkill, Exodus, Testament, Megadeth, Sepultura, Vio-Lence, Dark Angel, Death Angel, Kreator and so forth.
Stylistically expanding from speed metal, thrash was harsher, heavier and in some cases even faster than its predecessor. The lyrics, as before, were associated with the more negative aspects as life, as well as the darker. A good amount of thrash also dealt with political or social subjects not dissimilar to punk. Vocals were less sung and more shouted, and drums were often rapid fire. Solos, as you might imagine, were at times prominent throughout nearly an entire song. It was at this point in metal that music would only become heavier and more aggressive. Thrash was menacing, crushing and often disliked by the mainstream community for its heaviness. The music form would die down in the 1990's, and be replaced by the likes of black and death metal. Thrash was most likely named as such because many fans of the music often thrash (or "mosh") one another around at concerts. Early thrash was defined by the likes of: Bathory, Dark Angel, D.R.I., Exodus, Kreator, Metal Church, Slayer, Testament, Venom, Violence, and countless others ***************************************************************

*************************************************************** AVANT-GARDE METAL
(also called experimental metal, or art metal) Another metal subgenre, characterised by the use of innovative, avant-garde elements, large-scale experimentation, and the use of non-standard sounds, instruments, and song structures. The earliest avant-garde metal bands include Celtic Frost and Master's Hammer. The term avant-garde metal refers to bands and musicians who "incorporate new and innovative elements in metal, who break conventions, tear down walls, violate borders.
Although progressive metal and avant-garde metal both favor experimentation and non-standard ideas, there are rather large differences between the two genres. The experimentation of progressive metal lies mostly in playing complex rhythms and song structures with traditional instruments. For avant-garde metal, most of the experimentation is in the use of unusual sounds and instruments. Progressive metal also puts a greater emphasis on technicality and theoretical complexity (e.g. odd time signatures, complex song forms, jazz fusion influences), while avant-garde metal is more unorthodox and tends to question many of the musical conventions. Some avant-garde bands can be minimalistic in their music which is completely opposed to progressive metal's emphasis on complexity ***************************************************************

*************************************************************** VIKING / FOLK METAL
Viking metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music characterised by its galloping pace, keyboard-rich anthemic sound, bleakness and dramatic emphasis on Norse mythology, Norse paganism, and the Viking Age.
Folk metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal music that developed in Europe during the 1990s. As the name suggests, the genre is a fusion of heavy metal with traditional folk music. This includes the widespread use of folk instruments and, to a lesser extent, traditional singing styles.
The two genres are often related so have been included together here for simplicity ***************************************************************
AMON AMARTH Amon Amarth is a Viking-themed melodic death metal band from Tumba, Sweden, founded in 1988 (current name since 1992), and named after an alternative name for Mount Doom, a location in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. As of 2009, the band is signed with Metal Blade Records and has released seven studio albums, one EP, one DVD, and seven music videos. The Pursuit of Vikings, Runes to my Memory, Twilight of the Thunder God
BORKNAGAR Borknagar is a progressive black metal band from Bergen, Norway, founded in 1995 by Øystein Garnes Brun. The band's style combines folk metal and black metal with progressive and melodic elements. Borknagar's lyrics often deal with philosophy, paganism, nature, and the cosmos. The Genuine Pulse, The Stellar Dome, Future Reminiscence, Ocean's Rise
EINHERJER Einherjer is a Viking metal band from Haugesund, Norway, founded in 1993. Some of their albums are heavily folk influenced, while other albums feature a more traditional black metal sound. Iron Bound, The Ballad of Swords, Far Far North, Odin Owns Ye All

ENSLAVED Enslaved is a progressive black metal / viking metal band formed in 1991 in Haugesund, Norway, and currently based out of Bergen, Norway. The Watcher, Essence, Path to Vanir
FINNTROLL Finntroll is an extreme metal & folk metal band from Finland. They combine elements of black metal & death metal with Finnish polka, called humppa. VINTERSORG Vintersorg (pronounced ['vɪntɛr 'sɔrj]; "Winter Sorrow" in English) is a Swedish band from Skellefteå, Sweden, formed in 1994 under the name Vargatron (Wolfthrone in English). The Enigmatic Spirit, Till Fjälls, Astral and Arcane
*************************************************************** BLACK METAL
Black metal has been called the punk music of metal. Some characteristics of black metal include: heavy distortion, fast, repetitive guitar playing and riffs, high-pitched screeching vocals, swift percussion, repetition, technical simplicity, overtly anti-religious lyrics, often taking the form of Satanic themes which blaspheme Christianity, and other occult themes
An abraded, very low fidelity recording style is common to the early albums associated with the genre. Modern black metal has incorporated atmospheric elements using ambient guitar and keyboard passages such as organ sounds or other miscellaneous instruments.
A distinct feature of the early bands' image was the use of corpse paint, a special kind of black and white make-up which was used to make the wearer look like a decomposing plague victim, also hiding their identity. To some, black metal is just as much about image and show as it is the music. ***************************************************************
VENOM Venom is a metal band formed in Newcastle in England in 1979 by Cronos (vocals, bass), Mantas (guitar) and Abaddon (drums), names gleaned from The Satanic Bible. They are often regarded as an important early influence on death metal and black metal. Their first album, Welcome To Hell (1981), was a remarkable tour de force at the time, when the only group that dared mention the name of Satan was Black Sabbath. Their second album, Black Metal (1982) is often cited as important in the development of black metal and death metal. Many elements of those genres are found in the music, the lyrics and even the song titles. Welcome to Hell, In League With Satan
BATHORY Bathory must be considered a major influence, either directly or indirectly, on virtually every black metal band in the last decade. It was Bathory, along with Venom, who helped pioneered the raw death/black style and gutteral vocals that are now standard in the genres. Basically a one-man band (with a scattered few early-career exceptions), Bathory's work have run the gamut from more simplistic Venom-ish fare (first two albums, the debut in particular) to a more epic, Manowar-ish style, steeped in Norse mythology, on much of the middle and later albums, to a more thrash-based style on releases such as Octagon. Quorthon (the man himself) has also recorded apart from the Bathory name, releasing two albums under the name Quorthon, said to be very un-Bathory-like. The latest releases is the two part Nordland effort, with part one released in 2002 and its followup released earlier in 2003. A new album was expected to be recorded in 2004, but with Quorthon's unfortunate and unexpected passing, this would appear not to happen. A Fine Day to Die, One Rode To Asa Bay, Valhalla
DIABOLICAL MASQUERADE Diabolical Masquerade was a Swedish one-man black metal band with progressive influences. The band was formed in 1993 in Stockholm as side project of Anders Nyström (aka Blackheim), known for his work as the guitarist of Katatonia.. The album Nightwork is a grandiose, accomplished album, clearly black metal in structure but with rich orchestrations and numerous nods to thrash and traditional metal. Nyström played virtually all the instruments as well as the suitably extreme vocals. Death's Design, the fourth album, was a true horror movie soundtrack with 20 movements each broken down into several shorter interludes that overall comprise the 61 tracks listed. Certainly one of the most ambitious extreme metal releases in some time. Haunted By Horror, Death's Design:1st Movement, All Aboard The Perdition Hearze!, Dreadventurouz
SAMAEL Samael are black metal wizards from Sion, Switzerland.. formed in 1987. They moved from a traditional black metal in early albums to a more progressive, electronic approach in later recordings.. Passage being the breakthrough. Rain, Baphomet's Throne, Telepath

Grishnackh, who was the sole member of Burzum during its existence, is currently serving a 21 year sentence for murder and arson in Trondheim, Norway. Grishnackh and his project were instrumental in the crystallization of early black metal, and Grishnackh later gained great infamy when he murdered Euronymous, the guitarist of another Norwegian black metal band, Mayhem. Dunkelheit, Lost Wisdom
MAYHEM Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band which was originally formed in 1983. The first band members were two schoolmates, Manheim on drums and Necrobutcher on bass. The name "Mayhem" was taken from the title of the Venom song "Mayhem With Mercy". Much controversy has surrounded the band regarding various murders, suicides, and other forms of violence. Mayhem has moved through a variety of black metal styles, even going so far as delving into the areas of dark avant-garde industrial and electronica. The group (at least in its earliest incarnation; 1983-1993) is widely considered one of the cornerstone bands in the Norwegian black metal movement. Necrolust, Freezing Moon
DARKTHRONE Darkthrone is a highly influential Norwegian black metal band. They began their existence as a technical, jazz-influenced death metal outfit under the name Black Death. The band later adopted the stylings of the black metal scene, using corpsepaint and working under pseudonyms. Their early black metal albums explored the themes of a corrosive sound, extremely low fidelity recording quality, and musical simplicity and minimalism. Darkthrone to this day remain a powerful force in the black metal genre, though they have experimented with their influences throughout time. Transylvanian Hunger, Quintessence, Too Old Too Cold
IMMORTAL Immortal is a well-known black metal band from Bergen, Norway. The group was formed in 1989 under the name "Amputation"; they originally played death metal music. Immortal broke up in 2003. Call of the Winter Moon, Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark), At the Heart of Winter

CRADLE OF FILTH Cradle of Filth is a British melodic black metal band formed in 1991. The group has progressed from a rawer, more traditional black metal sound to a fully orchestrated symphonic metal feel. Their music has often touched on gothic metal overtones, and has been both ridiculed and praised by critics. Most black metal fans criticise the group as coverage by Kerrang and MTV have brought them a much more mainstream and commercial image. Thus some black metal fans deem them "sell outs", while hardcore fans of them remain. Nymphetamine, Temptation, No Time to Cry
TRISTANIA Tristania is a goth/black metal band from Norway, formed in 1996. Their music can be classified "scandinavian goth metal". Also described as black metal combined with opera, gregorian chants and medieval gothic music.. Tristania puts a lot of focus around operatic female vocals, haunting choruses and classical instruments such as pipe organ, flutes and violins. Those gothic elements enrich their fast-paced heavy black metal riffing and giving it a new depth. On the side of metal Tristania uses heavy black metal riffs with dominant eerie keyboard and powerful drums. Equilibrium, Libre, Wormwood
PRIMORDIAL Primordial is a celtic black metal band formed in 1991 in Skerries, Ireland, by Pól MacAmlaigh (bass) and Ciarán MacUiliam (guitars). The band's roots stretch back to 1987 when Pól and Ciarán first began playing together with Pól's brother, Derek. The band (who were called Forsaken for a brief period) initially played a rough, hybrid mix of early, primitive Thrash and Death Metal (playing covers of Death, Sepultura and the like). The Coffin Ships, Gods To The Godless, End of All Times
*************************************************************** POWER METAL
Power metal is a style of heavy metal music combining characteristics of traditional metal with thrash metal or speed metal, often within symphonic context. The term refers to two different but related styles: the first pioneered and largely practiced in North America with a harder sound similar to speed metal, and a later more widespread and popular style based in Europe (especially Germany, Italy, Scandinavia) and Japan (early Visual Kei bands) with a lighter, more melodic sound and frequent use of keyboards. ***************************************************************
HELLOWEEN Helloween is a German power metal/heavy metal band founded in the early '80s by members of the two bands Ironfist and Powerfool. As mentioned previously, Helloween is mostly credited with first developing the power metal genre. By taking the hard riffing and minor key melodies handed down from metal masters like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, then infusing them with the speed and energy introduced by the burgeoning thrash metal movement, Helloween crystallized the sonic ingredients of what is now known as power metal. I Want Out, Helloween, Power
ICED EARTH Iced Earth is a heavy/power metal band from Tampa, Florida that was formed in 1985 as Purgatory. Iced Earth combines influences from thrash metal, power metal, NWOBHM with gothic touches, and claims to be one of the few modern bands still producing 'true heavy metal' and refusing to accede to trends. Some consider this band somewhat cheesy due to their lyrical content and the way it is delivered. I however, thoroughly enjoy them. The only way I can describe them as.. is Iron Maiden on speed. you can definitely hear the influence. Clean vocals for the most part. Angel's Holocaust, Coming Curse, Burnt Offerings, Watching Over Me, Wolf
BLIND GUARDIAN Blind Guardian are a German heavy metal band formed in the mid-1980s in Krefeld, West Germany. The band are often credited as one of the seminal and most influential bands in the power metal and speed metal subgenres. The band's lyrics, written by vocalist Hansi Kürsch, are inspired by the fiction of fantasy authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien, Stephen King, and Michael Moorcock, as well as traditional legends and epics. Over the years, a running theme has developed associating the band members with traveling bards. Valhalla, Mirror, Mirror, Somewhere Far Beyond,
DEMONS AND WIZARDS Demons & Wizards is a power metal band conceived as a side-project of the metal bands Blind Guardian and Iced Earth. It is made up of the vocalist for Blind Guardian, Hansi Kürsch, and the guitarist of Iced Earth, Jon Schaffer. Schaffer writes the music and Kürsch writes the lyrics. Terror Train, Fiddler on the Green, Down Where I Am
PHARAOH Formed in 1998, in Philedelphia, PA. Pharaoh is a relatively obscure and unknown progressive/power metal band, which is unfortunate because for a power metal band, they are pretty damn good. For a genre of metal (power metal) that I generally dislike a lot of the bands and cheesy singing, I like Pharaoh. Reminds me of Judas Priest meets Iced Earth or something. Telepath, No Remains
SONATA ARCTICA Sonata Arctica is a Finnish power metal band from Kemi formed in 1996 under the name Tricky Beans, which later changed to Tricky Means. Neo-classical metal is a subgenre of the heavy metal music heavily influenced by classical music.
The chord progressions, arpeggios, broken chords, and speedy scale runs of neo-classical metal are borrowed for the most part from Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Niccolo Paganini, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. Most renowned neo-classical guitarists are classically trained virtuoso players and often incorporate Harmonic Minor scale and the Phrygian scale. Such performers are sometimes dubbed "Guitar Gods" ***************************************************************
JASON BECKER Jason Becker, (born July 22, 1969) is an American neo-classical metal guitarist and composer. At the age of 16, he became part of the Mike Varney-produced duo Cacophony with his friend Marty Friedman. They released Speed Metal Symphony in 1987 and Go Off! in 1988. Cacophony broke up in 1989 and Becker began doing solo work, having released his first album Perpetual Burn in 1988. He later joined David Lee Roth's band and recorded one album with him. However, Becker's success was hampered by his then-diagnosed Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and was given three to five years to live. *************************************************************** NU-METAL
Nu metal (or aggro metal) is a subgenre of heavy metal music. It typically combines aggressive, hip hop influenced, angst-ridden vocals, samples, rap-style beats and drum set patterns, and/or DJ techniques.
Some heavy metal fans do not consider nu metal a form of heavy metal music at all, arguing the genre is too diluted from what they consider "true" heavy metal, further noting that nu metal guitarists typically forgo traditional metal guitar technique, including both soloing and the riff style most associated with the older styles of metal. Other heavy metal fans, however, reject these arguments, citing rock music's long history of incorporating disparate elements--including jazz, experimental music and world music--out of curiosity or genuine appreciation for other musical genres. ***************************************************************
Soulfly Formed in 1997 by former Sepulture guitarist and frontman Max Cavalera.. they took off where Sepultura left off before Max left - fusing a thrash metal style with brazilian tribal and world music elements. Often utilizing hand drums such as Djembes, and other tribal instruments. Favorite album: Soulfly, Prophecy
Korn Korn (usually written as "KoЯn") is a 'heavy' metal band from Bakersfield, California, United States. Davis' distinctive singing--often a series of grunts, whines and bizarre scats--and his lyrics, are inspired in part by his alleged abuse by an unnamed party. The group's music is a blend of pounding, tribal drums and loud, distorted seven-string guitars, and has gained the band a great deal of popularity throughout the years. Korn are often cited as inspiring the wave of so-called nu metal bands in the late 1990's and early 2000's Favorite Korn Albums: Korn; Life is Peachy; Follow the Leader; Issues

Favorite Mudvayne Albums: Kill, I Oughtta; L.D. 50; The End Of All Things To Come
Mushroomhead Mushroomhead is an eight person metal band from Cleveland, Ohio.. formed in 1993. Their music can be described as a blend of nu-metal, industrial and hardcore, with some hip-hop and dub influences. The band members characterize themselves by wearing masks on stage (except for singers J Mann and Jeffrey Nothing), which occasionally results to accusations for "jumping on the bandwagon" of Slipknot, but the band members insist that they were the first to use this gimmick as is. Favorite Mushroomhead Albums: Mushroomhead; Superbuick; Remix; M3; XX; XIII
Slipknot Slipknot is a nine-piece metal group from Des Moines, Iowa, formed in 1995. Using different styles throughout their career, Slipknot have become one of the most popular Nu metal bands in the world. The band is noted for its onstage image: the members wear matching boiler suits--sometimes with UPC barcodes printed on the suits--and each has a distictive mask. On their first major label album, each band member was referred to by first name and number only; the band members are far from secretive about their identities, however, and their full names were present on their second major label album. One Minute Silence One Minute Silence were a four-piece band that combined influences from metal, hardcore punk and rap. Favorite One Minute Silence Albums: Available in All Colours; Buy Now... Saved Later; Revolution EP; One Lie Fits All
Killswitch Engage Killswitch Engage is a Metalcore band from Massachusetts, formed in 1999. Favored Disturbed Albums: The Sickness; Believe
Static-X Static-X is another band who got thier start in Chicago. Known for thier high-energy music and shows, Wayne Static (singer) usually stands out for his unusual hair which looks like a cartoon character who has been electricuted. I hate to nag, but I still noticed a few that should be included- Soilwork, Katatonia, Amorphis, and Winds. I guess it really doesn't matter as the list is damn good enough already, but its just my suggestion.
And a Doom Metal Category- My Dying Bride, Early Anathema, Theatre of Tragedy, The Sins of Thy Beloved.
Otherwise, still a greast fucking list man, I would definitely use this as a reference to anyone interested in the great world of metal.

Have you thought about creating a doc style report out of this? Perhaps even a web page would be cool. Even your own metal band review site.

Great list man! Needs STRATOVARIUS and LUCA TURILLI.
turilli is the man behind RHAPSODY, which made your list, but his solo stuff is important... The song "Kings of the Nordic Twilight" is one of the best songs ever made, IMO.
If you haven't put on "Luca Turilli - Kings of the Nordic Twilight" and gone nuts by yourself in your room, you haven't lived

Bah! No Refused??? Who was Refused? The excellent band Refused were the leading hardcoreband in Scandinavia when they were around. They were well known for following the uncompromising lifestyle "Straight edge" and for fighting for the animal rights. But mostly, they were known for being the revolutionary socialist hardworking band from Ume?, Sweden that always had something important to say. It was all about fighting against the capitalism, to overthrow the class system and to fight opression of all kinds. Their thoughts and opinions were spread through their lyrics, manifestos, interviews and on their many intense and powerful liveshows. And by releasing albums such as "This just might be...", "Everlasting", "Songs to fan..." and the excellent "The shape of punk to come" they have most definitely put their names in the history book... cont> Favorite Refused Albums: **The Shape of Punk to Come**/ Songs to Fan The Flames of Discontent

Some other bands worth mentioning are:
Borknagar Fates Warning Into Eternity Behold The Arctopus Hate Eternal The Haunted Macabre (self proclaimed "murder metal") Broken Hope Usurper
...the list goes on. While those bands may not have a huge following or have influenced many people, they still rot and roll!

hey guys.. don't think I'm ignoring you. I will add all the stuff you suggested to the list, but as of right now... I can only access the internet on at the public library so my time online is very limited. The initial list took me about 6 hours of digging up info on all the bands and organizing it.. so adding a bunch more I will need some time to do so.
If you guys want to help out.. you can post a short description of the bands like I did in my post, and that will majorly help me add them. Thanks guys

damn dude, nice job on the "nu metal" section. i wasnt expecting that lol. keep it up, im going to reference all the non-metal listeners i know to this guide to get them started in this great genre. Disturbed: Disturbed is a 4-piece band that formed when the guitarist, drummer, and bassist who routinely played together met the singer Dave Draiman in Chicago, IL. Draiman had grown up in a religious family from which he rebelled, being expelled from five boarding schools in his adolescence. His anger found an outlet in the thrashing sound of Disturbed, and the band built up a following on Chicago's South Side before a demo tape led to their signing to Giant Records, which released their debut album, The Sickness, in March 2000. Static-X: Static-X is another band who got thier start in Chicago. Known for thier high-energy music and shows, Wayne Static (singer) usually stands out for his unusual hair which looks like a cartoon character who has been electricuted. The title of thier debut album "Wisconsin Death Trip" comes from a morbid book the band found at a flea market, detailing a the murders and mental hospitals of a small wisconsin town. Hell yeah, these bands make me proud to be a Chicagoan. :p

"Slayer Credited with creating the thrash metal style". umm.....no.they definitely helped shape influence and bring it into the mainstream.Venom is the only band that can claim they created thrash metal.they call themselves black metal but if Venom isn't thrash i don;t know what the hell is.

Ok.. I added *most* of the bands you guys mentioned.. but I ran out of time. ekomstop - what category would Refused be under? is that even metal?
Deathexplosion.. perhaps Venom claim they created thrash but I've always thought of them as black metal. Slayer are the godfathers of thrash.. they may not have *created* it... but they defined it and crystallized it.

I'm not sure where exactly I would toss them in that list..Alternative Metal maybe? If they don't really fall into either of the specific categories; alot of their music definitely sounds like it's been higly influenced by metal, not to mention jazz, and electronica among others..to tell you the truth their two last albums kind of reminded me a little of Children of Bodom musically, but otherwise I guess they can be more aptly described as "a philosophical manifestation of the most creative, subversive, and dangerous elements of any subculture" (borrowed description Generally I guess they are usually labeled as a 'hardcore' band, but I mean trying to fully describe a bands music with a single abstract noun probably isn't really the most effective way of painting a decent picture for someone who may not have listened to them before.. I don't know, I still think they would probably make a reasonable addition somewhere in the list, I guess if you arn't very familliar with them yet maybe you could check them out sometime and draw your own conclusion..but yeah, if not and you feel like adding them anyway, I think I'd probably have to suggest going with Alternative Metal.

You absolutly have to put Decapitated in your Death Metal section, they are the absolute premiere of fine death metal. Check out their albums 'Winds of Creation' and most importantly 'Nihility'
They were 15 when they made Winds of Creation

meh, I won't argue much with the quality of bands on your list as you have done a very general outlook on the most common bands from each genre, which doesn't necessarily mean they're the best or most innovative in most cases. I won't pick at your list too much since it's mostly subjective but merely make some suggestions.
first of all, where the fuck is Suffocation in your death metal list? also, Immolation, these bands redefined the genre of death metal and were doing things that other bands hadn't even thought about doing.
Winds is NOT death metal. they belong under Neo-Classical Metal if anything.
there's a lot of black metal bands that deserve to be on your list, but I'll merely suggest Enslaved since they are masters of the genre and one of the only innovative Norwegian BM bands, as well as doing the viking metal (will explore later) thing very well. also, Weakling (USA) only released one album that completely destroys a lot of the Norwegian stuff and is not comparable to the shitty goth metal bands like Cradle of Filth, Tristania, and Dimmu Borgir (who had one good black metal album in Stormbl?st).
I'm also at a loss for why Bathory isn't on the list anywhere. Quorthon (the leader of Bathory and sole member for a while, R.I.P.) basically shaped black metal along with Venom (who aren't black metal at all and are very much thrash) and perhaps King Diamond/Mercyful Fate (mostly the corpsepaint and not much musically). Bathory also introduced the Norse mythology themes and epicness of viking metal that other bands like Vintersorg, Otyg, Thyrfing, etc. later explored but could never touch Bathory.
there's a serious lack of Esoteric and Candlemass (who essentially created the genre) on your doom list. while we're at it, Trouble and Saint Vitus and other seminal 80s doom bands who really defined the genre and built on the foundation of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc. before Paradise Lost/MDB/Anathema etc. were even around. also, the latter 3 bands I just mentioned are not anything related to doom anymore and are watered down goth rock music and essentially a Jeff Buckley/Pink Floyd cover band (Anathema). you also should have at least one funeral doom band such as Thergothon or Evoken on your list.
I'd also suggest another genre in Stoner Metal. Kyuss, Melvins (could go in Alternative Metal since they heavily influenced but sound nothing like Nirvana and Buzz of Melvins got Kurt into punk music..and I don't think Nirvana are metal at all but whatever), High On Fire, Electric Wizard, Orange Goblin, etc. are a great place to look in the Stoner Metal genre.
as for avantgarde/"progressive" (take note: most "prog metal" bands aren't progressive at all and aren't innovative..guitary wankery = NOT progressive in any sense of the word *peers at Symphony X and Dream Theater*)..I'd suggest maudlin of the Well who relied on the jazz foundation but were much more than that. their first album "My Fruit Psychobells...a Seed Combustible" was a nice starting point but not musically as mature as their followup double album "Bath" and "Leaving Your Body Map" before they disbanded to form Kayo Dot, which is more of an indie/doom/whatever mixture than the more jazzy doom of motW and aren't really classified as metal even though they're heavier than most bands on your list they've realized the silly confines of the metal genre. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are another avantgarde metal band that are very refreshing.
and just to add some bands to your grindcore list since you haven't reviewed any of them: Pig Destroyer and Fuck...I'm Dead
Refused, while a great band, are really hardcore/punk and not metal.
sorry if I offended anyone, I'm fairly outspoken regarding metal, which has some great elements and bands but also has a lot of shitty, generic bands with shitty fans who are largely ignorant to other music.

hey.. thanks for your input. no need to get snappy though. the main reason it's not 50 pages long is because it already took me the better part of 10+ hours digging up info and writing all that up. some of the bands I don't even like very much, but put them up there anyway for the sake of being metal icons and other people like them. Others I've missed entirely, simply because I don't have a computer and the only time I can get online right now is the public library. You're right I did just do an overview of each genre.. because I don't have hours and hours to work on this guide.. I realize I've missed a lot and can still think of about 50 other bands I could add.. I just don't have time right now.
So I'll add the ones you suggested as soon as I have the means.

you should add a band called Damaged to your list. They recently broke up, but they're a band out of Australia. I dont really know how to describe them, but theyre fucking sick. They've got 4 albums, the best one is called Token Remedies Research. Brutal as can be. Also, off the top of my head...Arsis, In Slumber, Anal Blast, Vehemence, As The Sun Sets, Cattle Decapitation, Iniquity, Circle of Dead Children, Darkest Hour, Sewaged (Out of Israel), Ablaze My Sorrow, Enter My Silence, Goratory, Heaven Shall Burn, Dehumanized, Holymarsh (south korea), In Quest, Prophecy, Soilent Green...umm..tahts all I can think of right now.

Shroomism, I have to hand it to you--you've really opened my eyes to metal over the course of my time here at the Shroomery. For Christmas, I got Opeth--Deliverance, Children of Bodom--Hate Crew Deathroll, Kyuss--Blues for the Red Sun, and Slayer--Reign in Blood. I think I can officially count myself as a metalhead now.

killer fuckin list man... Just a couple of bands you missed... Origin, Devourment, Dismember, Exhumed, Gorgasm, Rotting Christ, Vital Remains, Acetylene and Cattle Decapatation... That's about all I can think of right now. I'm sure there's a couple I'm leaving out, but you got most of the good ones already...

Kewl, thanks fer the list. I've been out of metal for a while, but thanks to you I picked up Nile's first album since they're hq'ed an hour away from me. It kicks ass, and I'll be getting the rest of their catalogue. They're working on a new one currently, btw.

Damn, I can't believe I never heard of Nile before now what with them being in the same state and all. I'll definitely have to catch them live (would've been cool to see 'em in Spartanburg). Do you remember an old Atlanta band called Nihilist by any chance?

I'd recommend Orange Goblin - The Big Black, Electric Wizard - Dopethrone (especially the song "Funeralopolis"), Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley, High On Fire - Surrounded By Thieves, Sleep - Sleep's Holy Mountain, and not so much stoner but the Melvins - Houdini & Stoner Witch albums. I have most of these albums on my computer or can get them from my bro's computer. let me know, and I'll share them on Soulseek in the Shroomery room. peace.

Hey, that'd be really cool. I have a pretty nice Melvins collection, maybe you'll find something you'll like, too. The only Kyuss I've heard is Blues for the Red Sun.

how could I forget Dissection? classic band who deserves to be on the list somewhere. they took the best elements of black metal and basically invented the Gothenburg melodic death metal sound and fused the two sounds into something really unique and awesome. http://bnrmetal.com/groups/diss.htm doesn't even really talk about their BMness and only focuses on the melodeath sound in their music but whatever. absolutely essential.

I should've read this long ago. I wasn't always into much metal...then recently...thanks to a shroomery friend as well as a metal head employee of mine, I was recently introduced to some of the best music I've heard in a long time.
I now find myself buying new CD's quite often.
My library now contains the following:
Killswitch engage(witch I recently made a fan group on myspace) Opeth Dream Theatre Amorphis Sepultura Dimmu Borgir
Already had:
Tool(of course) Metallica Korn Pantera
I'm working on adding much more. Thanks for the list Shroomism.

Just look at the list man. Nearly all of those bands are worth checking out. As for one that tops Opeth, I don't know, thats pretty tough to call. You get to a certain point in any genre where its impossible to say one is "better" than the other. Off the top of my head though Death Spiral Architect Cynic Meshuggah Decapitated Cryptopsy(technical death metal at its best imo) All of those are great.

Great list, man. I used to jam so hard to Images and Words by Dream Theatre! Hell yeah! And I was definitely into some Megadeth for sure. A few additions: Estradasphere (alternative metal?) Candiria Green Jelly (Tool connection) Apocalyptica (kickass)

Buckethead - An enigmatic character whose stage presence is marked not only by his bizarre attire (a KFC bucket & halloween style mask) and a penchant for pop'n'lock style dancing (think Michael Jackson's moonwalking), but also for his ability to play an electric guitar like no other. He seems to be as versatile as anyone could ever want to be, his technique ranges from finger picking, slapping as one would a bass guitar, even tapping things Van Halen would have never imagined. His style is heavily influenced by 80s shred metal. He has worked with a myriad of different musicians (Les Claypool, Bill Laswell, Brain, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell.. the list goes on)
Favorites: Bucketheadland, Giant Robot, Monsters & Robots, Enter the Chicken (produced by/includes Serj from System of a Down), The Cuckoo Clocks of Hell (!!!)
The Cuckoo Clocks of Hell is an album featuring Buckethead on guitar/bass and Brain on drums/drum machine. It is nothing but tripped out speed metal, no lyrics, no vocals. Heavy as fuck.

Awesome list my man. I came in here looking to flame you, since most of the time people have their heads up their ass when talking about metal. You covered all genres of metal nicely. Even the really gay Nu metal bands that I hate.
You're death metal list impressed me. Very good list of bands you have there.
Some suggestions of truly awesome bands that should be added.
The Aborted, Skinless, Despised Icon, Job for a Cowboy

Metalcore? even though Nergal's voice is still guttaral death (arguably more so on the apostasy than demigod)
I thought these band better represented metal core, and behemoth aint like any of them :/ http://www.bnrmetal.com/v2/genre.php?ID=K
edit: k probably not guttaral death, but you know what i mean.

He tries deathy vocals, but the music underneath is metalcore, so why not call a spade a spade?
I really like Behemoth's first album. Classic!

It should be noted that in an interview with Tool's Maynard James Keenan, he state that their latest album 10,000 days would best be enjoyed under the influence of psilocybin. I have journeyed through that album and had multiple moments of rapture while hearing it. I blame "Rosetta Stoned" for my first ever experience of ego death.

Yeah I should probably add about 50 more bands.. I wrote this shit like 5 years ago.. I'm lazy though
edit: I went ahead and ghetto added a 'Metalcore and Deathcore' section for shits and giggles. I'll go through the clean up the formatting a bit and organize it a little better and add a bunch of bands when I'm bored and have several hours to kill...

You should add 'Between The Buried And Me' as well as 'Protest The Hero' to the progressive section.
They are definitely in the top 5 most popular progressive metal bands right now on the scene.
Colors (BTBAM) and Fortress (PTH) both were two of the best metal albums to come out of '07-'08.

Just some pedantic organisation to an otherwise brilliant list. I think the Devin Townsend Band should just be renamed to Devin Townsend, seeming it's all just him anyway and only two albums were under the DTB banner, and now he's releasing works under the Devin Townsend Project name, but again, it's all just Devin really.
Also I think Cynic should be in the progressive metal list, not the tech-death list. They may be highly technical, and honestly I think they more or less created technical death metal (I say this because it was Paul M and Sean R that influenced Chuck Schuldiner to take on his more technical and progressive evolution in Death with the album 'Human'), but listen to 'Focus' and 'Traced In Air'. They may have some growled vocals at times and such but they're really fusion musicians. It's like meticulously crafted jazz with distortion. Plus the lyrical content is about as un-death metal as it gets. Paul Masvidal is a hippie like the rest of us here!
Otherwise, brilliant list dude. Perhaps you should include a section on post-metal/post-rock type stuff too seeming you included ISIS in there. I HIGHLY recommend listening to Jakob from New Zealand, they've toured with ISIS in Europe and NZ. Phenomenal band which goes from serene soundscaped heaven to relentless monolithic walls of sound with absolutely no effort, the transitions between two extremes are seamless.

Noted.. added PTH and BTBAM, moved Cynic up to progressive.
Gotta switch a few bands around, going to be adding a bunch more soon and yeah I was thinking about a post-rock/post-metal section but maybe just hook that in with avant-garde also possibly a viking/folk metal section but most of the bands in those categories fit under others so yeah..

Ah if you're dividing genres even more you could always go with Brazilian thrash;
Sepultura, sarcofago, chakal, Vulcano (the very first), Korzus, Overdose, Dorsal Atlântica/Ultimatum, Opprobrium/Incubus, Mutilator, Torture Squad, Holocausto, ...
Brazilian thrash is actually very popular but I never hear anything about it on forums... Ah well hope I helped out a bit

Not to sound too anal but:
Sepultura started as death metal. Sarcofago always struck me as black metal.

Updated a bunch.. there's still a bunch more I want to add.. and was thinking about a Viking/Folk metal section.. but fuck.. I'm running out of room!
Was thinking about just killing all the descriptions of the bands.. but no... think I might just kill the whole classic metal section and/or alternative metal, that will give me a lot of space.

Fucking epic list, I love the fact the first band mentioned is one of my all time favorites Opeth. I'll have to read though all of it once I get more time.

Should add Brain Drill under Technical Death Metal. They are pretty new, the album I have, Apocolyptic Feasting, came out last year and I love it. Great to hear some new tech death. The good albums are so few and far between.
There's a preview track for ya.

Great fucking list my friend!
The avant, sludge, and stoner sections are all bang on. More people should become attuned to that music.

Metal music theory:
The idea of metal-specific music theory seems silly because all music theory is basically the same. What differs is method of composition, types of modes, scales, harmonies and melodies used -- and these differences give each musical genre its unique sound and meaning.
Quote:
If you look at the greatest metal albums, what you'll notice is that often, they are composed of eight to twelve songs that all sound relatively the same, but on repeated listens, each one becomes unique and stands out...Like a collection of baroque pieces or Gregorian chants, it all sounds alike on the outside, but each individual piece varies greatly, at least to a trained ear.
Metal, more so than other forms of popular music, is structural music with narrative song forms, meaning that the music is composed of a series of repeated phrases (riffs) that follow each other and interact with each other...It's more complex not only musically, but artistically as well, due to the fact that some form of ideation or ideology often precedes the composition of the actual songs.
Zach Zimmerman, L.A. Metal
This is a good place to start: we can't look at metal in terms of rock music, or a fixed song structure with a single harmony and varied modes, but as a song structure defined by its phrases and from that, selecting modes and harmonizing them.
Quote:
The approach to riffing in old school metal is designed to make small melodies or phrases complement each other, and have that define structure; in metalcore, like in rock or punk, riffs fit into a pop song structure, even with some modifications.
Brett Stevens, Examiner
That leads us to a study of melody and phrase, which is where metal is similar to free jazz, in that how phrases fit together determines "meaning" in a song, in contrast to other genres where coming back to a tone signifies a meaning in terms of harmony.
Quote:
Nowadays, when people are taught classical theory, they are taught about harmonic progressions. It's a fairly dry and academic pursuit. Back in the era when classical music was actually written, all composers were schooled in renaissance style counterpoint: that is, the way in which melodies fit together. Most people's idea of a melody is an elaboration on a progression of harmonic notes, whereas in reality it is the only spontaneous part of a composition.
In my view, melody is a sequence of notes which manifests something the artist wishes to express, and this may be disguised by a harmonic progression, meaning that a melody does not have to be a 'tune'. Every great composition has an underlying melodic structure which is its 'soul'; sometimes this is immediately evident, such as in Gregorian chant, Indian classical music, or even Mozart; in other works, it can be disguised either by polyphony proper, by harmonic notes (romantic music), or through the repetition of small sequences (riffs).
For me, the study of counterpoint has been far more engaging than the study of harmony, because the melodic integrity of the music gives birth to its theory.
Metal Hall
As that quotation points out, it's a lot like classical music: structure through melody. And riffing heavy riffs!

Awesome list man, lots of stuff i didn't know about, but then again I'm more into the old guys,Maiden,Sabbath...
A band I recently discovered,I don't know if it has been mentioned in this thread is Orphaned Land, they are a progressive metal band from Israel and they fuse all kinds of influences in their music from Jewish,Arabic to death and doom metal to form a beautiful oriental sound.Worth checking out if you like middle-eastern rhythms, they have songs both in Hebrew and English.

I knew that compiling a list of bands would come in handy some day!
This is a list of every band of which I own an album (either in disc or digital form) that I enjoy. I post it here because the vast majority are metal; I just have a spattering of other genres, especially recently as I've been broadening my horizons slightly. Note that I don't like some bands here, but I do feel they have at least one worthwhile album in their discography. So, without further ado:
Abonos Abydos Accept Acid Bath Adagio After Forever Agalloch Age of Silence Agent Steel Alestorm Amaran's Plight Amon Amarth Amorphis Anathema Andromeda Angel Dust Angel Witch Angra Annihilator Anthrax Anubis Gate Apocalyptica Arcturus Arena Ark Armored Saint Arsis Artillery Astral Luminous At The Gates At Vance Atheist Atrox Avantasia Axel Rudi Pell Ayreon Bathory Be'lakor Behemoth Beyond Fear Beyond Twilight Black Sabbath Blaze Blind Guardian Bloodbath Bolt Thrower Boris Borknagar Brainstorm Bruce Dickinson Buddy Lackey Burzum Cage Camel Candlemass Cannabis Corpse Cannibal Corpse Carcass Cathedral Celesty Celtic Frost Children of Bodom Chris Caffery Circle II Circle Cloudscape Cloven Hoof Communic Conception Control Denied Coroner Cream Crimson Glory Cryhavoc Cryptopsy Cult of Luna Cynic Damian Wilson Dark at Dawn Dark Angel Dark Lunacy Dark Moor Darkthrone Darkwater Deadsoul Tribe Death Death Angel Decrepit Birth Deicide Demilich Demons & Wizards Destruction Devil Doll Devin Townsend Diablo Swing Orchestra Diabolical Masquerade Diamond Head Dio Dionysus Disillusion Dissection Doctor Butcher Doomsword Draconian Dragonland Dream Evil Dream Theater Drudkh Edge of Sanity Edguy Eidolon Electric Wizard Eluveitie Emerson, Lake & Palmer Emperor Enid Ensiferum Enslaved Entombed Epica Eternity X Evergrey Evoken Exhorder Exodus Fairyland Falconer Fantômas Fates Warning Finntroll Firewind Flotsam and Jetsam Freedom Call Gamma Ray Genius Gojira Gorgoroth Gorguts Grailknights Grave Digger Green Carnation Gwar Halford Hammerfall Hammers of Misfortune Harmonium Heaven & Hell Heavenly Helloween Helstar Hibria High on Fire Hourglass Human Fortress Hypocrisy I Iced Earth Immolation Immortal In Mourning In The Woods... By the way, just to throw out some of my more controversial opinions: Omnio by In the Woods... and Into the Everflow by Psychotic Waltz are the two greatest, most underrated albums on there, and Artillery's By Inheritance is the best thrash album of all time. Not the most consistent, but still the greatest.

Half of those bands I don't like, but...
IT FEEEEELS LIKE, I'VE BEEEN HEREEE BEEFOOOREE HEERE, WHERE THE ANIMALS LAY DOWN TO DIEEEEEE

Also, I recently acquired Pharaoh's Be Gone album. Holy shit, it is awesome. Awesome awesome awesome. Restored my faith in contemporary metal somewhat, as it had been waning slightly.
One of my favourite songs off of it: http://www.last.fm/music/Pharaoh/_/Buried+At+Sea?autostart
The band, for those of you who don't know, has Tim Aymar on vocals. He's that guy no-one knew about until he sang for Control Denied.
If you don't have any Control Denied, then I cry for you.

After a rough skimming, I did not see one very impressive band... INTRONAUT! Complex grooves, seamless songwriting, and nice dynamics. Prehistoricisms and Void are their best. http://www.myspace.com/intronaut My friend was too drunk to get into a Melvins show. I eventually lost him, but stumbled into a free Intronaut show. Destiny.

I believe Kamelot should be added to this list.
They've been labeled as Power Metal, Melodic Power Metal, and Symphonic Metal. I'm not sure what genre they officially describe their music as being.

added some bands.
Guys if you're going to suggest a band, check and see if it's not already on the list first. I don't really need to see a list of every metal album you've ever owned if 93% of the bands are already on the list
I'm tired, going to sleep. Will add more when I'm not lazy and remember

Yeah, sorry, I thought this was just a general thread for metal talk; I didn't realise it was actually a compilation for good bands of each subgenre. I'll write something more constructive later.

i see that you have mentioned arsis in the first post (amazing band), but you should definitely link the song "a diamond for disease." it is a masterpiece of melodic death metal. dont know many songs that can compare; this song is best listened to on a good pair of headphones
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zsL93ifyeE
[url=youtube.com/watch?v=iK1XoXfOaVE&feature=related[/url]
if you like death metal, this song is a must
ps. dont know why my links are going wack?

Done
Yeah Sheeno... this started off a few years ago as my own personal metal recommendations thread, since people were constantly asking me for suggestions of new metal to check out.. and instead of writing it over and over I decided to make a comprehensive thread, so diehard metalheads could find new shit, and even complete noobs to metal could find something they liked.
Then it expanded and I rewrote it and people kept suggesting stuff so I made it more of a Shroomery collaborative suggestions place, for the best of the best
Keep bringing the new shit!
And if you mentioned a band and I haven't added it yet, don't worry I'll get to it eventually. Unless they suck.

YOB should be added to either the stoner or doom section. They remind me of Electric Wizard - psychedelic yet sludgy and heavy as bricks to the balls. Check out either Illusion of Motion (one of my fav intro songs) and the new album The Great Cessation. Also, what about earthtone9? They were a really good "prog" underground UK metal band. They released 3 albums and an EP before dissolving. The vocalist has resurfaced in a few others band, one notable band being Twin Zero. Twin Zero has a similar feel and identiy as earthtone9 without being a simple rehash of the old music. Antigama could be added to the grindcore section, along with Agoraphobic Nosebleed (Pig Destroyer's guitarist's side project), Painkiller (John Zorn and old drummer from Napalm Death do a good jazz/grind combination), Birdflesh, Blood Duster (porno grind from Australia), The Berzerker (gabba grind from Oz), Cripple Bastards and Excrementory Grindfuckers (german grinders who parody popular music and make it grindcore). Burnt By The Sun and Burst could be added to metalcore. Any Genghis Tron on there? This could fall under prog. Same goes for ISOR. Metalcore, but interesting. I don't remember seeing Candlemass or Cathedral in the lists, but maybe I'm just blind. Caina are another good avant garde metal band. Also, Dureforsog, East West Blast Test (a kind of blend of grind and mish mash), Baroness, think that was added, but if not should probably go under prog metal. Any Deathspell Omega, or Destroyer 666 under black metal?

Also, less traditional black metal - Gallhammer (Japanese), Sigh, Gnaw Their Tongues (avant garde noise meets black metal), Axis Of Perdition (Silent Hill worship meets black metal), Nortt (very funeral doom mixed with black metal), Aura Noir, Goatwhore, Lurker Of Chalice, The Meads Of Asphodel, Portal (Oz), Ruins (Oz), P.H.O.B.O.S (another noise meets black metal band), Skeletonwitch (blackened death), Ulver (early stuff is black metal, now is weird Coil worship). Was there any Decapitated, Dismember, Mithras, Gorguts or Ulcerate (NZ) in death metal section? Earthless is another awesome stoner band. Long grooves. Guapo is another good stoner band. Sons of Otis too. Weedeater also. Khanate could be added to doom along with Disembowelment and Torture Wheel. Leng Tch'e could be added to grindcore, along with Rotten Sound, Din-Addict and Phobia. Mouth Of The Architect? Soilent Green could be added to sludge. Transmission0 could be added to prog. Yakuza could be added to avant garde. A mix of jazz and metal.

A few changes I'd recommend: 1) Artillery and Morbid Saint under Thrash 2) Necrophagist under Death 3) Psychotic Waltz and Threshold under Prog 4) Tool aren't metal... 5) No biggy, but if you're going for perfection, there's a typo in "Possessed".

oh yah, i forgot, girls aren't allowed to like metal, riiiiight???

i dig thrash and grindcore, if i am to go by shroomism's comprehensive list.
HEll yeah, metal chicks that actually like metal are awesome!!! Few and far between but awesome all the same...
Not sure if these bands have been mentioned, I apologize if they have
All Shall Perish
BTBAM
Darkest Hour
Light this City (RIP)
Scale the Summit More of ambient metal
Once again, I apologize if any of these have been posted already. Hope you enjoy!

I'd also disagree with some classifications... King Diamond is heavy metal to the core, not prog! Speaking of which, I just noticed there is no heavy or traditional metal subgenre. That means your list is lacking of Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, Dio, Savatage, and many more classics... is this intentional?
Sorry to be so critical; I think it's great what you're doing! Metal really should be more appreciated (that which isn't metalcore or nu-metal anyway in my opinion, although well done for having the balls to put them on the list).

Wreath, one of my favorite songs. It's pretty heavy at first but it gets really melodic and nice later on in the song.
Part 1
Part 2 (a badass solo/ending)
Entire song is 11+ minutes so it had to be put in 2 separate videos. Typical for this band.

opeth is kind of just metal for metals sake. there is hardly any ambiance. they are so predictable. trying to explain what opeth sounds like to someone is trying to explain what water tastes like.

Oh shit, now that you mention it, you are correct.
Will you ever forgive me?
Maybe skip past the first 1m and 30 seconds of the song and hear what the rest of it sounds like? (2:48+ is a nice transition too)Judging by your posts, you sound like an argumentative individual that lacks the ability to be open-minded anyway. I interpret your post as a form of trolling, not bad though. I even decided to give in to your wishes and reply.
Opeth is anything but predictable.
I like your home audio thread. I have some THX certified computer speakers(see pics). You seem knowledgeable.

Just stumbled upon this. Really great list. Quickly scanned all ten pages of suggestions and will be waiting for some important suggestions to make the list as I second these...
ENTOMBED : classic death metal - Left Hand Path, Clandestine (defined the "sunlight studios" sound) FEAR FACTORY : c'mon - Soul of a New Machine (nuff said) THE SWORD : modern great metal period - Age of Winters, Gods of the Earth MACHINE HEAD BRUTAL TRUTH SATYRICON
Also noticed some important ones missing entirely...
UNLEASHED : classic viking death metal KRISIUN : anybody? nobody? really this omission surprised me GOREFEST : just listen to The Eindhoven Insanity (live) you'll see MALEVOLENT CREATION : Eternal (nuff said) MINISTRY : say what you may but Al & Co. had been putting out a plethora of great guitar work & metal for years UNSANE : stoner, noise, sludge, whatever... dirty, loud, & superb - Scattered Smothered & Covered, Occupational Hazard, Blood Run, Visqueen
Question also, I noticed CORROSION OF CONFORMITY & CLUTCH (both bands I love) but no HELMET ???
Other recommendations... HATEBREED BARONESS JUNGLE ROT
Thanks again.

I just found this thread. I'm pretty picky/pretentious when it comes to my metal. I like it BLACK and I like it weird.
Some of my favorite metal bands are DEATHSPELL OMEGA, Arcturus, Opeth, Negura Bunget, Ulver, Burzum, Esoteric, and Katatonia.
I used to really dig the death stuff but nowadays it's all black, prog, or doom for me.

Progressive bands do nothing for me. Never did enjoy Opeth.
Spectr and Blut Aus Nord are new and satisfying too me.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned the band Trouble, a heavy metal band.
I love nearly everything by AC/DC, gone off their live videos though.
Einherjar developed into viking metal that really rocks, catchy get up and dance, rock'n'roll metal. If you want to rock I Recommend Einherjar.
I still enjoy Twisted Sister, WASP and Motley Crew. Did anyone mention WASP?

Lamb of God Mastodon Metallica (pre Black Album) Slayer (pre Divine Intervention) The Black Dahlia Murder Pantera BTBAM Meshuggah Revocation Sylosis Death High on Fire Black Sabbath Intronaut
Probably others I haven't thought of lol
