I know someone who's teaching English in China right now. If you want to go to a city (she's in Lijiang right now) you need a degree, preferably in an English-related field. But as go closer to Mongolia, or in any other less populated areas, a high school diploma is usually good enough. And in my friend's case, all you really need is a half-completed music degree at a community college and some photoshop skills. :lol: Also, they rarely check references except at the biggest, most commercial schools.

The cost of living is low, especially as many schools provide housing, but some basic items (like chips) can cost $5-10 depending on availability, so you need to be careful not to blow all your cash on American food. If you're eating like the locals though, no worries--groceries and restaurants are dirt cheap, and the quality is usually very good.

You also want to be careful with DVDs--the black market produces most of the DVDs sold there (even if they look professional) and the penalties for being caught with illegal DVDs are harsh. If you buy a movie from a street vendor there's a good chance it was filmed by hand in a movie theater, so the quality will be shit, and you might get some bonus features like people walking in front of the screen or talking.:tongue2:

I taught English in HK.

No degree. Just walked in, was white and spoke like an American, was teaching class a half hour later. I am serious. I think the conversion only put me at 12US a hour. But it was probably the easiest job I have ever worked. The students already knew English so I was only really pointing out correct pronunciations. Each day I would just photocopy a couple articles from a British newpaper, and have each student read a paragraph while I corrected their mistakes along the way, and just go around the room with that. And the other half the time they just had questions about America. And teaching me about China.

i was looking into doing that. it seems you need to spend around $1,000 on a TEFL (teach english as a foreign language) class, and pay for air fare then you're in. if you google TEFL you'll find all the info on it. there may be other ways of going about it, but that one and being sponsored by a company are the only ways i found when looking into it.
