Teaching English Abroad (esp. Latin America)
    #5324288 - 02/21/06 02:29 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Anyone know anyone they can put me in touch with about this? My girlfriend and her roommate are looking to move, specifically to Argentina or Spain, and my girlfriend, Lucy, wants to teach English while in Argentina. We're gathering info for it but it would be great if anyone could put us in touch with someone they know who's done it. Especially in a spanish-speaking country.

Well, I can't say too much, but I can say that my fiance is working on her master's degree in teaching english as a second language. I'd look into info on moving to the countries and finding out if you need points, or if you need someoone to sponsor etc. I'm pretty tired so I might not be making much sense.

I don't. She does. I'm not moving there.

I've considered doing this many times. There are alot of schools here in Toronto that organize the whole thing for you, I'm not sure what the situation in the states is tho. From what I've heard from people that have done it, is that is can be very isolating and fairly frustrating, but all in all a good experience.

Does she have any qualifications?

I did a certificate program in teaching EFL at my university, with a practicum in Germany. It's a hard job. The demands vary hugely from one country or curriculum to another, but I think most employers will require at least a certificate like mine, if not a degree.

I have a friend in Shanghai. She's been there two years now.

When she went, all she had was a degree. The university we attended had some kind of hookup with a chinese language school. She tells me it was kind of a scam, since they charge something like a $1000 placement fee.

When I expressed my interest to her, she said just go. Don't deal with a placement school, and don't get a TEFL cert. If you're a native english speaker with a degree, you're good. Blue eyed, even better. (Yes, most schools want a photograph.)

Another friend spent three years in south america, going from Chile to Argentina to somewhere else. He said the same thing... just go. Get some seed money together, a bunch of resumes, copies of diploma, pick a city/country, and start asking the locals about language schools.

Once you find a place, if you're in a larger city (santiago, for example), use the internet cafes to search for jobs. Also, consider getting a prepaid cellphone so the schools can contact you. A local phone number could work wonders.

Finally, a caveat. Forget about teaching english in western europe. While we were giving/getting wedgies by the urinals after gym class, they were learning english (and german, french, swahili, etc.). So, unless you're uber qualified, forget it. Go to the developing world, Asia (esp S. Korea) if you want to make money, and South America if money isn't a big concern.

Also, money can be made on the side as a private tutor (unless the language school you work for expressly forbids this in your contract).
