I don't think that its possible for teachers to be payed more that would be rediculouse. Being a teacher is not a real world job despite its importance.

Teachers get paid relatively shit, unless they're well-tenured, have one of the most maligned jobs in existance, and, for what it's worth, also have THE single most important job in existance.

Teachers should be paid considerably more, especially to start.

That being said, they should also have to show performance to justify that salary. Unfortunately, at least partially because of the extremely stupid attitude that you've just spoken for, people don't take teaching seriously, including a lot of those who teach.

God, that's more than half the reason that this country is so fucked up. A 'democracy' of the uneducated masses (which is what most of the American Public really is) is fucking useless.

Writing your congresscritters doesn't do shit, since other SIGs tend to give them more money and get more attention. Besides, pay is decided at the district level, by the school boards and shit, and usually they'd rather funnel money into useless sports teams, and not eliminate teachers who're sucking.

The whole educational system in this country needs a fucking kick in the ass ... a complete restructuring and retargetting.

Besides, what've the congresspeople got to do with your stupid attitude?

not pointless and not really complaining but rather sharing ideas and talking about things we see.  wasn't even meant to be an argument, rather an observation, and I wanted to see what others thought.

BTW thanks for your replies and thoughts

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

this thread is hilarious. you have a group of dropouts talking about how bad the schooling system is. but most of you are missing the point. if you believe the system sucks and you actually care about it -- at least enough that you responded to this thread -- then instead of dropping out you should have helped to make it a better place.

i despised junior high and high school with a passion. so did my friends, and most of them dropped out. however, i decided to stay in and tough it out. when my history teacher offered what i believed to be biased information i questioned him on it. sure we reviewed the same US history each year we had to take it, but what you as a student could have done is discuss how it relates to current events, or tie it in with knowledge you learned elsewhere.

another example is my high school counselor. she tried to gear me towards the 'technical' track, where you take below level math and shop classes, in addition to co-op your jr and sr years. she told me to my face i wasn't college material. that was just enough motivation for me to prove her wrong, so i buckled down and did my best, and got into a respectable university. i'd like to go show her my college diploma with the words 'magna cum laude' on it but the good in me believes she did this because she knew that's how i'd respond.

point being, school is what you make of it. if you copped out by saying the system sucks then it's your loss. with a little more effort you could have made school what you wanted it to be, and wouldn't be bitching about it now.

What do you learn first in school? Stand in line, shut your mouth, don't act out. It is social engineering that stays w/poeple and fucks up the weakest, poorest, or most unfortunate of us. It's a weak excuse for an education, but what can you do in a country that is so political that we need a better word than bueracracy (See even I can't spell!) to describe it. Nuff said

I like the discussion about history and critical thinking. History is all important. That's why they teach you biased bullshit. To instill a sense of righteous indignation in a child at the events of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War etc. will serve to make proud adults who don't even understand their heritage or where it's going. Why do you think Americans fall for propoganda like "It's Un-American!". Bullshit! Fuck You! This is my land and my life! That's American. Have you seen the Gangs of New York? That movie may be Hollywood claptrap, but it's closer to the truth than they will teach you in High School. Shit, they don't even teach you critical thinking 'till college. And I still wonder why I can't meet inteligent people who can expess themselves! Maybe I should practice more critical thinking, lol!

i went to a one room school house in the middle of no where. the 1st year there was 5 students covering 6 grades. my last year there was 2 students. pretty good student teacher ratio. also my teacher was old school, used dunce caps, smacked us with rulers and stuff if we misbehaved. i think i was a great was to learn. the only thing i disliked was recess was rather boring.

phonics es gewd

Wow, oDin - that's a really small school!  Must've been an interesting experience.. then again, so is attending a school with hundreds of same-aged strangers

I enjoyed houshroom's post a lot, as well as many other comments throughout this discussion.  I personally believe that though the educational system in my country leaves much to be desired, a large portion of the responsibility should fall on the parents.

I am not a parent currently, but I know that if and when I become one, I will work my damnest to instill a certain attitude in my children.  One that will encourage them to think freely, to question everything, and to always grasp concepts from as many different perspectives as possible.  Fostering a thirst for knowledge in kids is the first and most difficult step.  Of course you have to be delicate or you could risk turning them away from learning, but if you can show them how valuable knowledge can be - not to mention interesting - then it is my belief that the kids will take it upon themselves to decide what to take in from their studies at school, and when to be a skeptic.

That being said, as far as school is concerned directly - I believe teachers deserve a higher pay scale and should be held accountable for their teaching ability.  Sure the tenure is nice, but all too often I have witnessed long standing teachers simply not give a fuck about their subject after too long.  This is not acceptable.  Hiding behind a union in this instance is not fair and teachers should be up for review on a regular basis.

However it's like I said, the information is still there - be it in a biased textbook, on the internet, through conversation with faculty, or even in a promotional video swung to one opinion or another.  The key is having at least one or two close persons (ideally the parents) there to help the children understand that they shouldn't believe all that they are fed, that skepticism is a valuable trait, and that perspective is everything.

That, and they should eat some mushrooms
