Public School in America
    #4085539 - 04/22/05 03:50 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

What is your opinion of it?

I went to public school and I'm going to send my kids (if I have any) to private school. That is all I need to say in regards to that. Obviously, my opinion of public schooling is not very high.

I am in Public school... In my Freshman and Sophomore years it was hell. Things got better when I got a car and could actually get women and not have to do so much fuckin homework. Most teachers deter me from doing work because they suck at teaching and aren't into it at all.

Some public schools are excellent....others, well they don't have a good reputation. Check out the stats in your area. Here in NYC, the elementary public schools are well ahead of the Catholic/private schools in math. They are catching up in literacy. Unfortunately many local public elementary schools only go until 5th grade after that the kids are bussed to an intermediate school where the kids and teachers have no control

I persoanlly don't think it has much of a difference. Growing up my next door neighbors/best friends went to a private school while I went to a public school. Right after school they seemed more "book smart" than me but I definatly had more "stree smarts" Now that we're all in college I'm actually doing better than either of them. Private schools are good but you need to make sure your child has adequate contact with the outside world. As a side note I really think school uniforms inhibit childrens abilities to develope a sense of "self".

Yeah, our system sucks too.

Even worse, we have to make-do with the hand-me-down textbooks the uber-publishers give us after designing them for YOUR schools :smirk:

it can publick my ass!
went to one and did everything possable to get credit without being there(senior year I attended scuba class and a med prep class, both at diffrent schools, working credit etc...) before i could get away from campus i hid in the art room w/ headphones.

my brother went to the same school, he also hated it, now he goes to the alternative school. it pays better attention to the students, so much so that he's getting the best grades of his scholastic career(so far...)

Public School + Homeschooling by caring parents who can filter all the bullshit the kid hears at school = great education

But we all know that the private religious schools would never do antyhing like that.

I went to private school up till 6th grade, then public the rest of the way

and I gotta say that while private school nurtured me intellectually, socially it retarded me. I don't what I'm gonna do with my kids if I ever have any, depends on what schools are out there, but they're definately not going to a private school with any kind of religious bent.

A general rule of thumb that I've always found to be true [I've been to aLOT of schools] is: The smaller the school is, in terms of student population, etc., the higher quality of education and attention there will be for the students.

Massive schools with an ungodly amount of students in one single classroom, and one teacher isn't going to produce the kind of atmosphere that is conducive to quality attention and learning.

With this in mind, it is easy to see that many private schools will most likely offer higher quality education than most public schools. Not to mention that private school-teachers usually get paid more - thus are more "motivated".

Is it any wonder that the Constitution has become largely irrelevant in American politics since the government took over schooling? Those power-hungry bureaucrats want a nation of dim-witted sheep to be cannon fodder for their wars and loyal supporters of increasing government power. Don't get me wrong--I believe an educated population is important--but to hand the responsiblity for that education to that entity which we should be the most suspicious of is not a good idea.

I went to a Catholic High School. While they had an obvious pro-life agenda, it was for the most part a rather open and tolerant atmosphere. I loved my religion classes. They made for a great forum for discussing issues of spirituality.

I always thought of public schooling as a one one size fits way to learn. Those with a greater potential to learn quickly are forced to go at a slower pace than they are comfortable. Those who are slower struggle to keep up.
My US history teacher constantly tells us that we are being cheated by our, "loser government schools taught by coach Mike. The US has constantly lowered the standards of learning" He continuely states that the word count of a student has constantly been driven down since he went to school (30s or 40s) and by doing that have restricted thought. Good teacher.
