Do you get pissed off at people who can't speak English?
    #5122294 - 12/30/05 12:07 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

I do sometimes. I just ordered some sushi and I got a lady who could barely speak English.

Sushi lady: "Helro....Watchu wun?"
Me: "I would like to order the Sashami platter."
Sushi lady: "Wha dessin wu ew ike wih hat, lksdjlksdjlksjdflksjdflkjs"
Me: "uh......That sounds good."
Sushi lady: (in pissed off indignant voice) "NO! Wha dessin wu ew ike wih hat"
Me: "Oh...what dressing would I like with my salad....?"

Naw, I can understand that. It's just not her first language.

The ones who piss me off are the people who claim English as their first language...but who still can't speak or write it:

It's genuinely annoying when I go to a place whose manager is retarded enough to put someone who mangles english into a position where the public has to communicate with them.

a Burger King down the street from my campus ALWAYS has a single woman at the register, and it's a mexican girl who has a thick accent and speaks poor english. And she doesn't understand english very well either. People need to know how to fucking communicate in a position like that. People like me deserve that kind of fucking job. If someone has poor english language skills give them a position where it's less of a hindrance to performance.

This is hardly an illogical concept. It makes damn good sense.

If they are working any job that needs communication skills, it really bothers me. Also, it really bothers me when people who can't speak English used to come into my work. It's not my job to cater to all the various languages in the US. It's a new citizen's job to learn the language that will allow them to be able to function in society.

I had the problem when I called tech support once that the person barely spoke English, I couldn't understand a word they were saying and it wasn't for lack of trying, so I simply kept asking to speak to someone else until I got someone that spoke english.

Tech support gets some real retards.

If I ever were to start a eugenics program with any sort of authority, I'd use tech support informants to supply identities of the mentally invalid.

My mother manages a small computer store... one day a customer came into the store claiming a powerstrip wasn't working. When asked if it had been plugged in  they said it was. They then showed how it had been plugged in.

It was plugged into itself, and they expected it to work.

:rofl2:

yea, yea

it can be a pain in the ass, but you shouldn't blame anyone for not knowing how to speak Engrish. If anything it is the companys fault for hiring them into that position.
These are just people trying to better themselves in our country.
If Our little Emire falls, and we have to go find work in Mexico, you'd hope that they wouldn't treat us any differant for not knowing the language.

I'm more offended then pissed off, like if they make a very solid attempt to learn english, then cool, ok, its when people just start yammering away in their native tongue and then stare at me blankly when I don't respond, I'm like wtf I wouldn't go to your country and expect you to understand me.

If they want to be a U.S. citizen, they should know the language that is predominately spoken, in order to be able to be a working part of the community.

If I moved to a European country, I would learn their language before I moved there.

They do treat non-spanish-speaking people with disrespect down in mexico. And some mexican immigrants to the U.S. do the same even when they're in the U.S.

Much of the respect that you'll get in mexico will be because you have tourist money that the local economy happens to rely upon.

As for non-english speakers in the US, I was under the impression that you needed to speak english decently in order to even be allowed to become a naturalized citizen. Not eloquent english, but at least functional english.

Funny that I just read this thread.  I was rudely awoken this morning to a incessant doorbell ringing and pounding on my door.  At noon, on my day off.  I'm expecting a Shroomery hoodie anyday day now, so I throw on the nearest pile of clothes near the bed, race to the door all excited like a schoolgirl seein her first peepee and I answer the door and its a mexican man.  I say hello, and for the next 3 minutes, I get a speech on how I should support him by buying his abnormally small "fresh" produce.  Problem is, I could barely understand a word he said.  Which not only pissed me off, it probably pissed him off as well, cuz I cut his speech short saying no thanks, I get my produce from the grocery store......3 BLOCKS AWAY!!!!  And I shut the door, hoodie-less and angry! :smirk:

my biggest bitch about this is when you get hispanic people who speak broken english with a mexican accent and they cant speak a lick of spanish either. its due to their parents speaking broken english in the home.

I don't really get *pissed off* at foreigners, but I can get frustrated. I mean, they're here just like our ancestors were, in search of a better life... You can't really blame them for trying their best to get to another country, get a job, and survive on a decent income.

But they need to learn English badly. And not just common phrases, I want to be able to talk to them, and for them to talk back with no confusing accent, or at least a minimal one. And until they do, put somebody else at that drive-thru window, or at that cash register or on the opposite end of the Tech Support line.

People that lived in the States their entire life usually are less well spoken than those that immigrated and learned the language.

Unlike those dirty skidmark borderjumpers.

Just kidding.

See, when you know at least two languages fluently, you get a much better understanding of what a person's trying to say when they're at a loss of words. By knowing two languages myself, I really get a better understanding of where a person's coming from.

I never had much success learning other languages, but I did try.

In the end though I think that, unless a circumstance arises where it's beneficial to learn another language, I can be content with speaking english very well.

Learning another language will make you a better English speaker. You wont learn much from textbooks though - you have to live in the country for at least half a year.

When confronted by ppl who speak foreign languages and annoy me, I use sign language to say I'm deaf and make a 'failed attempt' at speaking while motioning with my hands.

Try it. Seriously. If it bugs you enough, try it.

yes, the individual should learn the language. however, it does take years and years to develop the nuiances of a language that smooth over a deep accent. you guys should just be patient with people. Have you guys ever moved to another country and attempted to learn the language? I can guarantee you you'd feel like shit for quite awhile because the native speakers would have trouble with your speech - it would happen to anyone. have some compassion. people come to the US to better their lives and they're not going to know the language as well as native speakers right off the bat.

and im with trendal on this one - I'm more annoyed with the native speakers who cannot pronounce words correctly and cannot for the life of them use at least a sembalance of proper grammer. from the ghetto thugs to white trash rednecks, they all annoy me.

Whether or not we should be patient with them, the moronic manager that decided to hire them for a job where people are forced to decipher their broken english to conduct business deserves to be smacked in the head with a rolled up newspaper.

I'm tired of having my fast food orders horribly mangled by someone speaking bad english as a second language, whom I have to ask to repeat themself in order to understand what they intend to say. At the very least they need to teach them to memorize specific phrases (thought of by a better speaker of english) that are common for the job, so they can just repeat a simple and coherent sentence in common situations.

Give them a job with less emphasis on communication, damnit! There are still plenty of employment opportunities fitting that description.

I just dont want the person acting as a liason for me to conduct business with a company to be a person who can't speak my language well.

language is used everywhere in the service industry - this is unavoidable. the best thing to do is not be a dick. they're people who are trying to better their lives and family. give them a break - they already have enough snotty brats crying about their happy meals.

there's always things YOU can do to ease communication in drive thrus. For instance, at Taco Bueno, when ordering a beef burrito, I usually say Ground beef burrito in order to distinguish 'beef' from 'bean', which sound very similar, especially over a shitty distorted microphone. I started doing this after they screwed up my order a billion times in this way. Now they usually get it right.

being in texas, I come across many limited english speakers. Thus, I have found it useful to pick up a little spanish. Most mexicans see my attempt at their language (broken as it may be) as a sign of respect.

It is the job of a company to satisfy the customer. I pay them for my service. If the best they can do is force me to interpret poorly spoken english then they're hardly doing a high quality job. However opinionated and belittling you may choose to be it would be hard to argue against this point. I'm hardly entitled to baby these people, i'm not their parent and they are adults. I've never in my life received that sort of crap and I'm better for it. If everyone beleived it's good enough for them to speak broken english and that they're entitled to be dealt with by others, then there would be rather little incentive to continue on and learn better english. I don't have much money... when I go to a food service establishment and spend a large portion of my fluid assets I don't deserve to get a meal worth a third of what I ordered and then be unable to explain properly the fact that the person responsible fucked up, because their english isn't even sufficient for them to have made it through the process of becoming a naturalized citizen.

Don't attempt to demean me because my different opinions must be inferior to you. I will decimate your character assasination attempts and you'll only look ignorant.

Now if you want to discuss respectfully, then I'd be glad to chat about this gracefully.

...then frequent another business. You'll be hard pressed to find any fast food restaurant where the workers are not immigrants, however. Be an adult and deal with it.

I've been to many restaurants and I've lived in areas where native English speakers are in the minority, and well quite frankly, I got along just fine only because I've learned to be patient and speak clearly. Are you really facing so much difficulty? Maybe you should listen better and relax.

I am not suggesting "babying" anyone - just saying you should respect their hardwork and their desire to better their lives by moving to the US by not acting like a dick because you have trouble understanding their developing language skills.

You obviously are monolingual and have never traveled overseas to a nation that does not speak English. Learning a language takes time particularly the nuiances of that particular language. You seem to have trouble comprehending and relating to this. I can tell you from personal experience it is a difficult task.

Your whole logic seems to be that "It's happening everywhere, and it's hard to avoid. Therefore it has to be right." and "Besides, it's a challenge to learn another language, so you're wrong to not put up with those who haven't succeeded yet".

I could give a half-ass if it's hard to learn another language. I know damn well that it is, even similar languages such as german and english take a long time to bridge the gap of. I used to speak a decent amount of spanish to my babysitter and her family when I was younger, and I had to communicate in german to exchange students on a number of occasions. But claiming it isn't foolish to put someone who speaks broken english in a situation where their job is the one requiring the most communication in a business is one of the most backwards statements I've ever heard. I don't have a grudge against people who haven't learned to speak english yet, but if they fuck something up in attempt to do the job that they're paid to do and that I paid the company for them to do then it's not my job to put up with their failure, nor is it my job to tolerate the poor forethought of the manager. A good business will use honest planning and effort to try and place qualified employees in positions where they can do a good job of satisfying the customer base. If they fail to do so, is it the customer's job to tell them it's ok and that maybe they'll do better next time? Is it the customer's job to hold their hand and tell them "It's ok that you fucked up and I paid for something I didn't want, because you didn't know any better and me and my hard-earned money aren't as important as that." I'm not talking about people who have a little difficulty, here. I'm talking about people who speak english incorrectly and yet act like they need no improvement, and people who aren't capable of understanding you if you speak clearly and slowly unless all of your words are in the vocabulary range that they bothered to learn.

And I'm hardly a lesser person because I'm not willing to quietly tolerate nuisances like that. I've worked in an identical fucking job, being in the sales room of a retail store. If I didn't speak clearly to a customer for whatever reason I would be an arrogant prick if I responded indecently or with anything less than humility when they asked about it. It was MY job to communicate and if I didn't do it right I had fucked up and apologized for it.

And, for the record, it doesn't take an eternity to learn to speak english in a way that's discernable. I knew someone in high school that spoke fluent, clearly understandable english less than a year after moving here from poland, and I never needed them to repeat themself. I met a chinese immigrant that ALSO mastered simple english in under a year, and who had no problem at all communicating except for a thick accent and a slightly underdeveloped vocabulary that was always rapidly expanding.

The thing is it just takes more effort and discipline to learn so quickly than most people are willing to give, whether it be due to poor work ethic, other concerns taking priority, or what have you. But arguing that it isn't possible is just incorrect. And claiming that saying otherwise is the mark of a fool, well that claim IS the mark of a fool, because it's incorrect and falsely judgemental.

If anyone here is the lesser for their statments it's the man who thinks he's so perfectly correct that he has the right to act superior and sling insults. The terms for such behavior are thus: arrogant, closed-minded, facetious, pompous, demeaning, belligerent, and the list could go on. Show some respect, or stay quiet. Nobody ever gained anything by being told how much they sucked by someone who thought they had all the answers. And nobody ever did a lick of damn good by talking about how right they were nor by saying how wrong and foolish someone else was compared to how right they were, that's not the means by which any valuable lessons have ever been shared.

You make some good points, but your attitude is awful, which makes me question their validity. You make a post about how intolerant I am and then make a very intolerant insult to punctuate the end of your post. I'm hardly impressed and I'm everything BUT swayed.
