Gerber Tek
    #800272 -

I was thinking of a new way to grow, to improve colonization time. Just get 2 or 3 gerber baby food jars, and innoculate them, they are 4oz. each. When they are fully innoculated you can just case them, but have the cases smaller than usual, so you can have a whole bunch of casings that fruit mushies. sort of like the sea of green method for weed.
this is mostly to get a couple grams quickly
good or bad?

Sounds like a good idea. Guess it all depends on how fast you can get from innculation to harvest. Worth an experiment atleast in my view.

I have used smaller jars before and it does make a difference - a positive one on the time to casing/fruiting. There is a point where the sheer number of jars you use can get inconvenient though. I would say anything under 4oz is just not worth it.

the 4 oz jars i tried colonized in about the same time, because they starved for oxygen at the same rate. that was my first attempt, and i kept the holes covered.

There either was a tek or some posts about this a few years back, do a search (I don't have time to go search for it today, sorry). The general idea was that you would lose less substrate to contams.. unfortunately, the production was not worth the enormous time investment..
your better off with qt. jars.

when my spore syringes come, i will use 1 for the "gerber tek", and the rest w/ half pint jars (if i can find any), if i cant find anything, i will "invent" something else to use

i have used 4 oz jelly jars.. those are the first jars i accidentally purchased...
very fast in colonizing of course
and i was fairly sure in how sterile they were with boiling..
i birthed them and got a nice yield.. cased them got a better one..

Would using the colonized gerbs as spawn on dung or straw work out all right?

Ok, I got my spores, made the substrate, put them into the jars, and now im waiting to sterilize them, i need to double check if i have a pc, if not, it may take awhile (when everyone will be out of the house for an hour)

I used the pf tek, but modified it a little

1/2 cup vermiculite (thanks to Joshua who packed it along w/ the spores)
1/4 cup ground up dogfood (pedigree, i got this idea from the guy who was testing diff substrates out and said dogfood was winning, i hope brand does not matter)
the reason for dogfood is i cannot get brown rice flour right now
and 80 cc?s of watter (roughly, i used 60 cc?s, but put a little more water in there cuz it seemed moist-dry, not moist

here is the breakdown of the steps (i just did this about 5min ago)

A1.) punctured holes in the lids
A2.) wiped inside of jars w/ rubbing alcohal
A3.) wiped the excess alcohal off
1. put 1/2 cup verm in
2. put 1/4 cub ground up dogfood in
3. mixed it up well
4. put 20cc?s of water in, mixed
5. put 20cc?s more of water, mixed
6. put 20cc?s more of water, mixed
7. spooned the substrate into jar 1
8. put 20cc?s more water, mixed
9. spooned the substrate into jar 2
10. spooned the substrate into jar 3
11. wiped the side of the jars
12. put verm in and capped it
13. put foil all around it
14. remembered to post pics of it
15. took foil off, put a little bit on the lids (over holes)
16. took pics
17. went to shroomery to post pics and what i am writing now

I was not really all that sterile in doing this, the only thing i did was wipe the inside of the jars w/ rubbing alcohal (is this bad?, i wiped off the excess liquid), and also wiped the inside tops, so there was no dogfood (nutrients for bad fungus)

I only have to be sterile after I steam bath (or pc) the jars right?

sorry for the darkness, my future pics will be much better

You did sterilize it, right? IF you did, you didn't put it on the list.

How do you plan on getting the cakes out of those jars?

Re: Gerber Tek [Re: Ekuenchuocha]

I did sterilize it, not when i posted though, about 30min after i posted (my friends parents left)

what i did to sterilize it was:

I got a wooden basket type thing, and a wak (the chinese cooking pan), i put water in the wak and had to where the steam from that went into the basket which held the jars, i did that for about an hour, then took the jars out, i dont know if that was a good idea, i have a feeling i need to do it longer, so i just got the smaller jar, innoculated it (flamed the tip of the needle first, and also sprayed lysol around my bathroom), then i gave it to my friend who will put on top of a heating pad, and during the day, it will be outside (it gets pretty hot outside, and is also very very moist)

but im going to get a pressure cooker tomorrow or the next day from a co-worker, so i will use that to re-sterilize the jars

when it is fully colonized, i will spoon it out or break the glass (i have over 30 smaller jars and 20 larger jars)
