Nirvana Sutra? (Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra)

I feel after seeing attachment, illusion, impermanence, & emptiness for what they (or are not) one finds refuge in the nirvanasutra (Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra) for a truely peaceful state of mind aimed for pure enlightenment...i only just found this last night, and it is the final teachings of the buddha that i did not know existsed, yet knew should exist, and it does!

What ive read from it seems to me like the buddhas summation of previous teachings, how they all tie together. It makes so much sense it makes me ache for the universal.

This has expanded my buddhism interest into mahayanna and zen which is a wonderous thing.

Please discuss :grin:

Please tell me more.

what type of Buddhism do you practice? Mahayana or Hinayana

Mahayanna/Tibetan id say, but i wouldnt fence my self in or even say im a true practicioner, ive never been to a temple in my life, these branches of buddhism & the Tao have provided me with all i have come across on my path, im sure many more branches shall blossom within my life :smile:

I incorporate its fundamental philosophy into my life as it speaks volumes of truth (to me) it answers every question i have in my quest for deeper meaning that i have felt since i was a child.

It for me is true fullfillment, devoid of individuality of the self (ego) and i see myself living or trying to live in this way for the rest of my life as this being i call me.

hah wow, that is the same way i feel

i was (forced) into Christianity first as a catholic, then as a baptist, and it never felt right to me. After church I would always have questions, and I would always be confused. Something just did not fit.

I honestly don't remember how i found Buddhism, but I went out and bought a few books from the Dali Lama, and other books on the basics of Buddhism. I have not gone back since.

I love everything about it. Just reading helped me with every day life. Things became clear, i could handle problems in a better manor, and my priorities in life changed all together.

I have even gotten a few members of my family into it.

Most peaceful, helpful, straight forward, clear, non religion


Al tho, there are things about Buddhism im not sure about, still reading and still learning tho.

There are actual a good number of posters in here who practice Buddhist meditation, but many like dblaney and Sinbad post here less frequently than usual.

I sit Zazen and am part of a Karma Kagyu Tibetan Sangha. Buddhist practice and the Buddhist teachers I have met have been really beneficial for me.

"The living heart of the message delivered by the Buddha in the Nirvana Sutra is that the Buddha never, ever, truly dies or becomes destroyed. Obliteration or extinction of his innermost being is an utter impossibility. Only his physical form passes away, but that physical form is in any case an impermanent Buddhic projection or conjuration -  not the ultimate Buddha who lies beyond it, the Buddha who knows no beginning in time or space and equally knows no end. The Buddha is not a being of flesh, sinews, blood and bones, but is the eternal Dharmakaya ("Body of Truth"), which is unfabricated, unconditioned, without bounds, ungraspable, invisible, and deathless."

All i knew of buddhism was the four noble truths, the eight fold path, and some tantric philosophy, this brings it ALL together perfectly.

Irrelevant, the teaching of the Buddha are the teaching of All that is.

You need not to have even heard of the words of the Buddha to realise the same exact truths.

But i believe it was Ronald Mc Donald Esq who transcribed everything that came out the Buddhas mouth. Yes the big mac himself!

Or maybe it was that white bearded dude who lives in the clouds called god?

his followers

actually for a some time, they didnt believe in writing the teachings down, they thought that word of mouth would keep its purity or something like that

but later they (and by they i mean kings, followers, others that have reached enlightenment, monks etc.) decided the teachings/sermons/seminars whatever...needed to be written down

lol i duno what you mean by the mushi side of things??

but i dont mix the psychedelic world with my beliefs.
I do love tripping, and do think there is something spiritual and amazing about how your mind and body react to things like LSD and magic mushrooms. B

You dont need to read the buddhas teaching to realise them, of course it helps! But the truth is they are all inside all of us all along.

I'm not a Vajrayana Buddhist, I just play one on TV and sometimes at The Shroomery. At present (and there's only the Present), Buddha is winning out over Plato as the philosopher who is doing more to bring me peace of mind.

I mean, psychedelics brought me to philosophy, first to Zen, then Yoga and Neo-Platonism. Platonic archetypes brought me to the Jungian psychological modernist version and to mystical Christianity and Gnosticism. I wrote a doctoral dissertation which used the Tibetan Buddhist Yoga as taught by Lama Govinda to organize certain Western psychological theories, but that was 25 years ago. Eckhart Tolle's books renewed my interest in Dzogchen, the highest Tantra, and so, despite or in addition to my Jewish Christian Gnostic tendencies of which prayer is still a workable function of the higher mind, I find myself looking outside at a garden Buddha, and (this week) hanging thankas of Chenrezig (Compassion) and Manjushri (Wisdom) in the room in which I type.

I guess the philosophy and spirituality forum has gone into a bit of a decline, a year or two ago you would have had many more responders.

on one side of p&s are the drastic unqualified lovers of everything, while on the other a few very hard pretenders of syllogism and logic above all.

there is only one MarktheGnostic who really has practiced everything under the sun successfully and of course there is one orgoneconclusion who claims to have proven that everything that is not poker does not work or works badly and he has actually developed a kind of following based upon cracked saucers and crop circle salad.

Over time I have provided a few descriptions of buddhist meditation, of stream of consciousness, and of the relationships between mental states and the layering of ideation which can follow emotional experiences, meditation, or psychedelics. (the search engine here is pretty good check it out)

anyway I am glad you are looking in this general direction (mahayana buddhism) with enthusiasm, as that energy is absolutely necessary to get your practice started.

in other words, half hearted attempts to keep still and aware will probably just lead to a life of card playing and saucer bashing and forgetting all about who/what we really are.

from what i have heard from those who have attained, enlightenment does not come easy. it is compared to ego death on a psychedelic, except it occurs for the duration of up to or over a year. it is a long process of ego dissolution, in which the final result is a full on conscious astral projection/obe where awareness is free to move wherever it pleases. one's consciousness is no longer the single point of awareness we are all familiar with, rather it becomes multidimensional and permanently expanded.

My phenomenal self is a tapestry of threads woven in the uniquness that is Markos. Sometimes, some colors predominate. The beginning of the tapestry was early childood, colorful but not irridescent until my 'soul' was psychedelicized. Now, I prefer to think of myself in muted pastel shades with much of the exclamatory day-glo mellowed into Easter egg hues.

There has always been compassion, from saving waterlogged earthworms as a child to rescuing our latest Miami plague - garden slugs - which squeeze under sliding glass doors and climb inside walls or dry up on carpeted floors, or drown in the pool. I like to think that I've saved creatures from Annelids to adolescents, but no, I have not "successfully" practiced everything under the sun although I have tried my hand at a number of things-to-awaken-by in my almost 55 years on the planet. Mind you, I do not know how to play cards, golf, football, basketball or social-sexual games. I do not know how to mix drinks or speak another language (although I admit being cunilingual :grin:). I have not fathered a child and have never changed a diaper. I have always refused to pretend that I like the common things of society in order to be accepted by others, so in the main, I am not accepted by others. This being the case, as theologian Paul Tillich once said: "Religion is what a man does with his solitude." I have had a lot of solitude in which to experiment and experience in depth.

anyways, im not going to get caught up in enlightenment debate, who has reached it and who hasnt, its a trap and i for see it

i read, and try to take in as much information as i can, in order to create a meaningful, peaceful, and fulfilling life for me and anyone around me

i try to learn from the people before me, i try and make as many good decisions as i can...but i am not perfect
