Points or Structure?
    #7837071 - 01/05/08 07:44 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I find myself to be one who finds it very hard to debate point to point, but rather I generally tend to be more comfortable explaining the structure of things. Rather than asserting something about some unknown, for example, All A are B, I tend to be more comfortable with If A, then B, when A and be are known. This can even be seen in this post, as I am making the structural distinction between declarative and conditional process in human communication. I could have written this post in the declarative way, instead stating that there are these two forms of communication, and I possess one or the other (or even further, that it is worse or better than the other). Instead, I wrote this as I was most comfortable, in the structural sense, making observations and reporting results, including pointing out any discrepancies.

I believe that this may lie in how we think, or more specifically, in whether or not one is a "left-brained" thinker, or a "right-brained" thinker. I have always been horrible at math and formal logic, but I do quite a lot of art work in addition to my study in Psychology and Philosophy. Others I know who are better at math and logic but worse in the sciences and arts tend to make more pointed arguments, and often it leads to some odd results when we argue. Namely, I get accused of being nitpicky or off-point, and I have little understanding of why I'm being accused as such, it happens a lot.

So, what are you, a pointer or a watcher? (The former will probably just make the point that I argue this way because I'm bad at arguing, so I'll consider that your answer if such a thing were to occur)

I think a good philosopher must be mostly a watcher. Philosophy of all things is ideally unfettered by points.

As Socrates would say, I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance.

All we can study is relativity. The spectrum of color. The pitch of tonality. the void of rhythym.

I was aiming this thread towards each person's individual approach. Even in saying the point is not the point you are making a point, lol. You're just a logical thinker, at least by my observation, so you make points, nothing wrong with that.

Of course, I can't be sure though.
