Floatation tank.
    #7811252 - 12/29/07 06:01 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Has anyone here had experience with a floatation/sensory deprivation tank? I've been reading testimonials and it simply sounds like an amazing experience. Definitely something I intend to immerse myself in within the next 3 months. I found a place in NYC that is well-reviewed and charges $70/1hr or $90/1.5hrs. I'm gonna go for the latter. I intend to get some practice, do it a few times sober, before I venture into it under the influence of a psychedelic.

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

have you been reading john lilly?

No, I haven't had any experience. It has always sounded slightly interesting, but I've never got around to looking into actually finding a tank.

No I haven't, though AlteredAgain did show me a book he was reading by John Lilly when we hung out last weekend...I was intrigued.

I'd like to do it. I'm way too cheap to pay those prices though.

Yeah. I mean, it would be rad, but it's just a tank with water in it.

Uhh...yeah..water that adjusts itself to your exact body temperature, that is peppered with the same type of salt concentration as the Dead Sea, so you completely float and all pressure is taken off your muscles. You think this is the same as a bathtub or something? All pressure off your body leads to physical stress relief. A lack of audio or visual input (sound + lightproof, the floatation tank is) leads to mental clarity. And then when you've achieved both, many people report a phenomenal meshing of the two, so that the line between mind and body is blurred.

Every source I've read concerning the matter shows it no more useful nor productive than deep meditation.

Meditation works for some people and not for others...sure is cheaper, though.

Well I'm sure that it's very cool. I just wouldn't pay $90 or whatever for just an 1 1/2 hours. I'm just cheap though.

Same goes for deprivation tank, there are reports of people who actually find it terrible. Sensory deprivation is often used as a form of torture, such as in Guantanamo Bay.

Everything I've read positive that can result from meditation or isolation tank is achievable for myself simply by taking a light jog through some nature trail.

Smoke some DMT and jump in and have a gay old time!

I'm going to test the waters for the first time in January. There's this place called Zero Gravity that is very close to home. They offer $60/hour or four 1-hour sessions for $200.

John Lilly's first-hand accounts of the tank provide a useful operating manual for this kind of psychedelic exploration.

Regardless, even in a sober state, the effects of floating are phenomenal enough I hear.

Seen the movie but never read the book. Worthwhile?
