This coming Tuesday @ 1:45 P.M. I'll be going into a sensory deprivation floatation chamber for an hour and a half. I'm so ready for this experience to happen.

Yup, sober. It'll be my 30th THC-free day, too, I am treating it as a sort of reward for not smoking pot for a month and sticking to those guns. So now the money I saved on pot can go towards this, cause (to answer jewunit's question) it's $90 for 90 minutes.

You can usually find them in a big city.
I know of at least one Chicago by my Dad's house...

I found a bunch of services around the city, but none of them was total deprivation, they werent in an enclose unit. The prices were around the same as you are paying.

I'm also very intrigued by these things. I hope they catch on so they start to pop up in my medium-sized city.

Be going total deprivation route, or taking along some tunes?

I don't know...I don't have a plan...nor do I have expectations...kind of like certain trips. I'm sure I will just end up thinking about writing the whole time, then trying not to get caught up in writing the floatation experience while I am there enjoying it, and then hopefully...break through that dynamic into an empty space.

I've heard the spectrum of experiences you can have is amazing. You can just breathe and enter a yoga-like trance state, or induce hallucinations as complex as role-playing as someone or something else in an actual visible landscape, to having amazing sexual encounters. Ah, the possibilities. My advice is to keep an open mind and let whatever experience emerges emerge.

A bath where you float weightlessly in a space with absolutely no light or sound... Sounds like a recipe for meeting mind itself.

I'm jealous. I've always wanted to try something like that, but in rural hell there's just no resources to accomidate those types of wants.
I also want to know how this turns out for you.
I'd totally sink that kinda cash into doing it if I had the money/

The first urination one experiences under this condition is delightful. There is a sense of total enjoyment of the urine flowing after this initial response to the release of the civilized inhibitions. Finally, one doesn't even notice one's bladder is emptying.
Do it. Just flow.

Enjoy the sober endeavor, though. Should be interesting.:D

I mean... just you and your sober mind... I can imagine the possibilities.
No clouds... no altered state... just you, alone in the void.

If I fall in love with the experience, I'd imagine I'd give it a shot tripping at some point, but probably would want to have a couple of sober/stoned goes first to get acclimated to it, and have the perfect controlled dose of acid to do it in, where I knew what kind of intensity level to expect from the acid - especially when you consider that I'd have to travel to and from the place. It'd be different if I owned one in my own house.
Also, the peeing thing reminded me, I was given some guidelines:
no caffeine for a few hours beforehand don't shave that day don't have a heavy meal before coming not too much liquid, empty bladder so you don't have to worry about thinking about that
-------------------- Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake. -Erik Davis

If you shave that morning, your skin is really sensitive and pores wide open and you are getting into some ultra-salty water. It just could sting for a bit and detract from settling into the experience.

I asked if he thought I should do 60 or 90 mins and the guy asked if I had previous experience with yoga/meditation. I said, "Well, without getting into too much detail as to how, let's just say I have a lot of experience in trying to attain quietness of mind through altered states of consciousness." Heh heh.

He said well then you should know what you can handle...I said, I think I'll go for the 90. And he said, yeah, I'd recommend the 90 to most people.

Alright, I'm in. I'll be going in on Tuesday. I'll report back.
THIS is the reason I come to the shroomery. I am waist deep into the natural health stuff, but yet I've never even heard of this thing.

No. I have several books on the subject as this is a favorite topic of mine. The tank's inventor, Dr. Lily, tried it while tripping and highly favored doing it whilst sober.

Thanks to this thread I was inspired to finish up a 10 day fast with my first float.
It was just great. Really hard to explain what goes on in there, but I highly recommend it. It's really rejuvenating and fun. I'll definitely be doing it more in the future.

Ya know, I just had a good idea. I think having a sense deprivation tank would be really useful for bio-assaying various plants/psychoactive chemicals. You could detect the most minute differences, and get the full effects.

John Lilly did some research in that area. I'm pretty sure he experimented with Ketamine (IV), LSD and PCP whilst floating. Heck of a guy.

90 is a good amount of time. any more than 2 hours on the 1st time might make you a little crazy. no alcohol all day, but smoke right before hand if you like.
try a 2 hour sober session one day, and a handful of fluff the next. the flotation really primes your mind to be cracked open wide.
one of my fantasy ideas is to find a cave off of the dead sea that you can swim into but is totally dark. preferably a cave into which a hot spring flows and that's got piles of sea salt chillin. then, dissolve the exact proportion of extra sea salt, if necessary, and divert just enough hot spring flow to heat it to the proper tmp (around body temp), and you got yourself as all-natural float sesh!
(bonus points if you take solar GBs out front before hand)

I went for an hour yesterday with a GREAT massage after it to celebrate a major accomplishment in my work life.
Very cool place (In Colorado) and I agree with OLF, I was a little freaked at first and I can't really say why, probably nervous anticipation. I've always been a sensitive person who tends to store tense energy in my body, and this was just what I was looking for.
It took about (I'd guess) 35 minutes to finally get my groove and just let go. I had a drop of water (VERY salty water) hit my right eye and I had to open the door to towel it off. Man that HURT!! But after I got through that and could feel myself letting go, I could really sense tension in my legs and back, for lack of a better term, being released. I've been driving a lot (35,000 miles in 10 months) and my lower back has been killing me, and it diminished the pain 85%.
As far as mentally goes, no hallucinations, no extremely deep thoughts, but I gotta say that it was SO nice to be in a place, alone, that was totally relaxing.
Final two thoughts. The more you do this, the better it will be. Of that I'm sure. And as already been mentioned, you can't really put into words all that it does for you, as I'm sure the benefits are deeper than we can tell, and that many are hidden.
I can't wait to go again. And I truly mean it when I say that for 12K, I will be buying one of these when we move into our own home.
Peace Guys!

2nd visit today for 90 minutes. It was much easier to relax, and the 90 minutes went by faster than the 60 did. I feel great. Kept the salt out of my eyes and had great meditative visuals. Very peaceful.
I'm hooked for sure.
