Stacked Jars in Boiling Pot?
    #771014 -

Does anyone know how well stacking jars works? Such as, one on top of the other and filling the pot with water past the first layer of jars?

Whenever I boil them I need to use so many pots or make several runs because I have been too shy to put all my eggs in one basket?
Is this paranoia or good sense?

thanks

There is no problem with stacking the jars in the pot or in the pressure cooker, as long there is a lid on the pot.
The steam from the boiling water condenses on the surface of the jars as long they are colder than the water and heats them up.

What would be the optimum amount of water to use then? Filled halfway up the top layer of jars, halfway up the pot, halfway up the bottom layer like normal?

Well if that will be as sure fire sterilization as regular boiling, why not always set up jars on something and not let the water come too near , maybe just at the bottom of the jars containing substrate. This would eliminating the water leaking into the jars, which is one the more common ways to contaminate a jar. No way for water to get in, no wetspot, or excess water in general, I realize that's the reason you take and holes and use tinfoil, but this if steam works as well as sitting in the water, why not take the extra precation?

yeah, my robot stacks his jars 3 sometimes 4 jars high in his crock pot (there are a total of 24-32 jars in the crock pot). He boils for 1.5-2 hours and hasn't had contams yet.

He also keeps all water below the jars so that none touch the water. The robot noticed that if the water touched the jar, it tended to dry out the jar a little sometimes causing it to loose water content. He also, keeps the boiling temp on the highest setting because the water isn't touching the jars.

The robot also adds hot water to the crockpot every 30 minutes so that it doesn't boil dry...
