I was searching for something and I came across this word in the "urban dictionary".

There seems to be a lot of contradiction. I'm not a hippie at all, but I was just wondering, what is a neo-hippie?

new age hippie in my opinion, takes beliefs in more modern ideas of living as they come about, that doesn't necessarily mean technological though.

I use the term to see the people who claim to be hippies who have no real strong ties to anything other than getting fucked up a lot.  there are lots of these people on campus :yesnod:

not once have i heard someone say "i'm a hippie!"
it's always a label used by someone else.
basic holier than thou mentality that trickled down from the days of feudalism and before, only now there is a self-styled king in every house sitting stop their throne of shit dictating who is what and why they aren't as worthy of life as they are.

this is my experience as well.

in the same way that business men do not refer to themselves as yuppies,

so do free thinkers do not identify themselves as hippies.

and if they do, then you can be sure they're only wearing the cultural clothing.

I hate the term "neo hippie". People can't be pigeonholed as "hippies" anymore. Hippies don't exist, and if they ever did they existed as a subcultural community in 1965-1968 in San Francisco.

The only people that have ever called me a hippie and meant it have been bastard suburbanites. (I am not a hippie, I don't even dress like a hippie). They said it the same way I heard the say fag or spic. It's only meant as a harmful way of tying down subculture in a way that the children of fundamentalists and the investor class can understand, because they are too stupid to associate a new kind of subculture with anything other than a subculture that existed 40 years ago. This is a way of distancing new free-thinkers by isolating them in a time period that is irrelevant and a culture that does not exist. Once this is accomplished, people stop listening to them and write them off as idiot neo-hippies stuck in a fairy world and a haze of psychedelic drugs.

Same shit has happened to me. I was called a "pill popping hippie" as an insult....go figure. I don't get why people think drugs = hippie. I don't see how I can even be associated with a hippie...I don't have long hair, I bathe, shave...I am a violent person. I dunno...people are pretty retarded. I hate people.

I think the term "neo-hippie" was coined by people who place "hippies" as a historical phenomenon confined to the 60's, rather than a culture that continues to this day.
