Substrate Question

I have only but a few supplies i still need and could not get at Wal-mart or Kroger. I have 8oz cannaing jars, Lysol, BrownRice. Could not find the flour anywhere and a plastic made box for my fruiting chamber. could not find Vermiculite anywhere either. so i was wonder i still need that a maybe agrinder of some type to grind the Brownrice up. Could not find one of those today so im alittle pissed so i was wondering if i could maybe boil the rice for a few minutes tell it becomes somewhat soft then mix it in my substrate. And i tryed to find somthing else besides vermiculite this evening that holds water i did but i dont think it worts of Contaminates to good. It was some kind of crystal stuff made by shultz. so i didnt get any. Wonder if i could also for just experimenting try going without the Verm/ and just use the Brownrice. So i might try just 1 jar and see what happens unless i can get some advice maybe on how to go about this. reason im asking is because i wont be back on town at least anywhere that sells Vermiculite and a good Grinder that wont cost me and arm & leg . Peace

Coffee grinder works fine, that's what I used, takes a while, but just make sure it's real fine. As for verm, yes it's neccassary (You're doing the PF Tek I assume) It holds in water, the rice is the nutriets, mycelium needs both. Check gardening stores or nursuries. I got mine at fred meyer, so check all the stores that are Walmartish. Good luck to you. As for buying a grinder restaurant supply stores might work, or sears or homeware places such as that. I'd imagine it's gonna be about 30 or so. Try just checking health food stores for brown rice flour, use a phone book.

you can use the brown rice without grinding it. just take what rice you are going to need and soak it in a bowl over night, or if you are in a hurry you can steep it in boiling water for 45-60 min.(make sure you drain the rice when done) you will need to pc the jars longer if you use hole rice grain, but they will hold more water.
then mix in some verm ( you wont need alot just enought to absorb any extra water that might collect in the jars )and load the as you would the pf tek.
I hope this helps you and if you have any question just ask.

I use a coffee burr grinder to make BRF. works great......just don't grind alot all at once.....you will burn the motor up.

Find a health food store. You can get brown rice flour there. Unless of course you want the extra expence and work involved in grinding your own
