1. Potency is really not extremely relative to the substrate. If you want to grow some monster mushrooms, look into wheat straw or dung.

2. I imagine that it is possible to grow on brown rice, but you would still need to add some vermiculite (or something) to the substrate to make it hold water more efficiently and to keep it from clumping together. The mixture should be light and airy, and a jar of brown rice certainly wouldn't be. If you want to use whole grain for your substrate, rye berries are tried and true.

3. My friend's cat orders organic rye berries online. You're right, it costs a bit (especially with shipping), but like most things you get what you pay for. For technique, check out the FAQ and the grow/find section.

If you've been using BRF/VERM and want to try something a little less fool-proof but with better results, I'd recomend organic rye berries in quart jars (if you live in the boonies, it's available at feed stores). If you want to stick to 1/2 pints, check out Ryche Hawk's birdseed tek.

Fana tek is right straw and manure produce the healthest cubs. But cubs are like pot if you dont have good genetics there not that good. But staments is right about substrates in that if you grow a mushroom to perfect health it well come out potent or as potent as it could be. However dung and straw wont help if your genetics are shitty.
