55 cc's of spring water is optimal for half pints.

I use creek or swamp water and boil it for a few minutes, then add it to the substrate. I usually use a 1/4 cup for half pints. Just make sure your substrate is moist, but not soppy.

I've found that non-ozonated (excuse spelling) distilled water works wonders. It can be found in just about any pharmacy.

i have noticed a very big boost in my yields when i use 'natural' water. i usually get it from a nearby stream or pond.
i toss in a handful of composted manure and let it soak overnite.
then i strain it, boil it, strain it again, and then use it for substrate preparation.
the cubes really love this 'shit tea'.
i'd recommend it to anyone who can get 'natural water' to give it a try, you won't be disapponted.

The "shit tea" works great. I like to use compost purchased from the garden store (I'm too lazy to make my own). I throw a big heap into a strainer and dump mineral water through it and repeat several times. I use the crud-filled water to mix my substrate, then sterilize my jars. Its true, cubies do love it.

a decent rolling boil for 20 minutes seems sufficient.
i strain it before to get out the big chunks.
i strain it afterwards because, since it is 'natural' water, it's crawling with little critters that die during te boiling and settle to the bottom.
figure i don't want them rotting inside my jars.
