Basic festival knowledge
#7584574 - 11/01/07 04:03 PM (16 years, 2 months ago) |

1. Cost of tickets (usually in the hundreds?) 2. When to get them (how far in advance) 3. Where to get them (specific people who sell tickets?)
Is it better flying to a festival or driving? I think I'd rather drive or do the bus or train thing, so that I can bring goodies if need be.
I've never been to a big festival before, ever. I have never even been to a concert. (sheltered) So...this winter I'm going to save as much as I can and then do as much as I can this summer.
Any advice appreciated.

dont know how about festivals in us, festivals tickets are from 75euros to 150 euros, im sure you find both cheaperr and more expensive ones. I usually buy concert and festival tickets in good time, 2-3 months before unless its smaller concerts that requires no traveling, Most festivals ive bought the tickets from official places where tickets are sold, festival webpages usually has a link where to buy tickets.
If you want to come to europe Im at summerjam in germany each year which is one of the best reggea festival there is imo.
its great to be at festivals , i like when there is not so much drunkeness such as puking, yellin and fighting , but where people are more chilled and smokes joints and manage to behave when drunk summerjam is perfect for that

Jambase is a great resource for finding events in specific locations. The cost is generally determined by how far in advance you buy your tickets. Check to see if you can get a volunteer position. It will generally get you in for under $20 if you work for four hours a day; checking people for wrist-bands, greeting newcomers, watching for people with glass bottles, and working backstage.

Road tripping with friends beats air travel in all forms, I've done both and prefer a lot of time to kick back, rent cheap hotels, camp, eat out, hit micro-brews and generally enjoy the sights, food and people you can afford along the road you are traveling. I'm not really one to stay on interstates though.
200$ is a far amount to predict for a 75,000 person festival, remember planning a high figure will leave extra for later if you are over.
You have to understand the festival circuit and reach out, get on mailing lists for the popular annual festivals and you'll know when sales are, this depends on your location and how far you want to drive.

Thanks man. I feel the same way about road tripping. $200...is that the price of the festival + extras? Sounds definitely doable. I hope to have at least $2000 saved before summer hits. That should get me on a few good road trips and festival experiences.

Jambase has nifty festival guide:
http://www.jambase.com/Festivals/
Usually you buy your ticket from the festival's website. Ticket prices vary greatly depending on size and talent. Usually it's a bargain though because you get to see so many bands and often camping is included in the ticket price.
I think it's best to drive to a festival, especially if you plan on camping. And plus, the trip is half the journey.
Save up and have some fun next summer. Music and dancing can cleanse the soul. Maybe you'll even get a chance to meet some fellow Shroomerites.

200$ for tickets, I usually spend about 75$ on food and booze before I enter the grounds, I try to have my drugs prepared before hand and I have no idea what you prefer so this is up to you. I also like to have 150-200$ in my pocket for beer tents, run ins with my ol' nemisis cocaine at odd hours and anything else I may want to purchase in the lot.
I was at the first 3 bonnaroos for under 500$ and I drove 18 hours each time, I did 10K for 200$ a couple years back. If you are willing to sell water, drinks, beer, sandwiches, homeade art stuff for awhile when there you can pay for costs and meet cool people while there but it cuts into your free time also.
I kind of got off the big festival circuit, I think I need to hit one this coming summer myself, thanks for the thread, I may have to plan one this year. Been dodging them for too long.

I REALLY like the 10,000 Lakes Music Festival in MN. Next year will be my 4th consecutive year going to that.
http://10klf.com/
Bonnaroo in TN is always a great festival in terms of talent. It is the largest so be prepared to feel like cattle amongst a sea of at least 80,000 other people. Also it is HOT there in the middle of July. 10KLF has less than a quarter the size of Bonnaroo, just the right amount of people I think.
http://www.bonnaroo.com/
There are so many other festivals I'm sure people can enlighten you on. But those are the two I'm most familiar with. Both of them are relaxed in terms of law enforcement which is always a good thing.
Another one I enjoyed in '05 was Wakarusa in Kansas. I know in '06 they had a huge police sting that left a bad taste in many peoples' mouths but I heard '07 was much better.

Hope this info helps.

Shambhala!
If you buy your ticket very soon (I was told they start selling them around the start of November, they cost $105. If you wait till a few months before the festival it will cost you around $180.
It is during August and goes from Wednesday to Monday afternoon. There isn't as much music till Friday day but it's still an amazing atmosphere. '07 was my first year and I am already hooked. I would quit my current job in a heartbeat or cancel any previous plans so I could go.

I'm going to do the Landscaping/Fertility/Seed Warehouse thing one more year here, I'm planning on getting out much more next summer, Red Rocks smells like a winner, I haven't been in far too long. I'm thinking on 10k also, hopefully it'll happen.
What the fuck? Phish rumors again? Are you serious or wishful thinking?

Cool, this is such valuable info. I'm so excited about having lots of things to look forward to this summer; just gotta save the $$. I prefer fresh food so I'll probably bring my own in a cooler, and as for psychedelics, I prefer to have my own also, but with money available in case I run into something I don't have.
I am getting so PUMPED! It makes me want to work extra hours at work just so I can get more money saved for more fun.

Hmm...interesting...what price would bottles of water, beer and sandwiches go for? I don't want to rip people off or anything. I just had an idea that I could perhaps sell fresh fruit juices. I'll be getting a juicer soon. But do they have places to "plug in?"

I wouldn't count on plug ins.. Beers usually go 2 for 5$ if they are micros or imports. Domestics a buck and waters a buck. Just add in some change for youself for keeping them cold and getting them there. Most people buy them out of convience and have money, they know they are buying marked up products... Just don't over do it, you have to be a sales person in a way, just standing with a cooler usually doesn't sell much.
Specialty foods go for 5$-10 it all depends, you could scout the grounds before setting up shop and see what people are paying... Only problem is the best times to sell are when all the good seats are being taken or all the people are leaving the big shows... All the good timing for selling make you miss good parts of the concerts...

Good beer you can sell for $3 a bottle or offer two for $5. Water is typically sold for a dollar. The juice idea isn't too bad. Maybe having the option of rum would make them sell faster.
In some cases you have to be kind of discrete about selling things if you aren't an official vendor. Selling alcohol can be especially risky.

I think my first few festivals I will just try and soak in as much as I can, without feeling the need to sell anything. Then maybe as I get more accustomed to the atmosphere, maybe I'll take some time to sell stuff.
What's the best place to camp at a festival? Should you get there early? Do you ever get searched coming in? Are most festivals 3 days?

Wishful thinking, just as a Phil summer tour is wishful thinking. Let's go to 10KLF. They already set the dates--July 23-26 '08.
