So nobody here has ever attended? I know the price is way up there, especially with the absense of any jam bands playing, but it seems like a semester of knowledge packed into 4 days.......

Any replies with info would be appreciated.

peace

There is a ton of heat at that thing, no music, and overpriced tickets. Sounds like it will be full of disgusting yuppy scum. Most hippies don't have 3 bones to drop for a festival when there are plenty of FREE ones out there to go to.

Plus, Pickard met that ass puppet murderer there. Have a good time.

Well it's become obvious that in this forum there are no peeps that either have the "bones" or the knowledge required to attend such a festival.......I too would appreciate the addition of a 'Jam Band'

This festival wasn't meant to be a 3 day hang out for "Phish Phans"

It appears to me to be a gathering of folks interested in the science of mycology........

If you don't have a personal experience to confer........then move on...........

I am lookin for peeps that may have attended, and the experiences thay have incurred........

All others please go post pics of your penis or what not.....

peace

Well, it's not really a "festival" in the traditional sense. It is basically a "conference" with festival like festivities going on around it. My understanding is that this conference originally started from the need for mycologists to get together to specifically discuss mushroom poisoning and toxicology. Apparently at the time of it's birth there wasn't much discussion between doctors, pharmacologists, or mycologists as to reactionary poison control measures for possible toxic mushroom injestions.

Since most trained mycologists normally refer to psilocybian and related mushroom genera as "toxic" or "poisonous" it was natural that over the course of time this conference developed an interest in some discussion of psilocybian mushrooms, injestion, effects, ect. As a result it became one of the only US based gatherings of myco-heads that even broched the subject of psilocybes. Over time they started taking on new themes and it eventually developed into what you see today. There are still some very nice general discussions about mushroom identification, toxicology, and basic cultivation seminars, but the over-riding theme now is something "magical."

They don't have bands playing because it isn't a "festival" in the sense that jam band fans think of festivals, however I don't think it will be too long before people start showing up to play there in the park or in the city venue.

If you haven't been, you should go.. but understand that Telluride Mushroom "Festival" isn't the Phish lot... although at times it can really look like it .

whoa now.... don't be so rash! i definitely fall into the category of not having enough money to go, nor do i think that i would spend 300+ $ on this event, but there are many many many people on these forums that are very damn knowledgable about mushrooms, and probably even some people here that could hold the whole festival themselves (mushroomjohn ring a bell? )... keep it civil, and i'm sure your questions will get answered!

Sorry, it looks like I really didn't answer your specific questions.

Telluride IS a gathering of people who's primary interest is the scientific study of mushrooms. HOWEVER, most of these people have some solid, and not so solid, connections with "counter culter." In essence it is a "professional conference" with a pretty solid underpinning of "counter culture" at the same time. It isn't out and out raging party or open drug market, but then again you are dealing in most cases with older responsible professionals and not a bunch of kids, older more stayed people handle their business differently... but it doesn't mean they don't know how or when to "get down." Ya dig.

Maybe this pic from the mushroom Identification table will help explain it:

If you have a geniune interest in mushroom science, show up, pay the fee, attend the lectures and you'll have a blast. There will be TONS of people of like mind to hang out and fix your head with. There are also a good number of people that show up for the mushroom picking that is usually very good around Telluride this time of year and there is always a really good party after the parade on the last day where everyone lets their hair down and howls at the moon for an evening.

I am going! I am so excited too.  I do know a teensy bit about mycology and am very interested in learning more- as much as possible, in fact.  The more I learn the more I want to learn and the more I realize I don't know.  I read mushroom books a lot, and have gone hunting a lot, and it is a hobby of mine.  I am also very interested in learning a lot about cultivation.

There IS going to be a music festival going on the same weekend in Telluride, which I'm sure is no coincidence, considering the bands that are playing. The link to the music is below. I am stoked for the whole festival.  :sun:  :mushroom2:  :sun:

Make sure you take your books, Paul is very approachable and is almost always willing to personally sign a copy or two.

SCI and Keller playing in the town park the same weekend as the festival?!?! Wow, now I really regret not going. That place it going to be JAMED with people.

It will be TOUGH to get a camping spot that late in the game. We arrived Thursday afternooon two years ago and had to park the RV in a city lot on the other side of town (only about 1.5 miles from the Town Camping Ground) for the night because there were no spots in the Campground. But we were able to scam a slot early the next morning (early bird catches the worm!). Checkout time is something like 10am and you can only stay 3 consecutive nights at the park, so if you go around the campsites you can see people's "permits" posted on the sign post for each campground. It will tell you the day they are supposed to check out so you can "scope" out a spot ahead of time.

You might have better luck if you are just tent camping, although with Cheese doing a show with Keller there will be even more people wanting to camp right next to the "venue" in the park. Might have best luck by sweet talking someone that already has a spot into sharing with you guys... head treats as a gift always make people more accepting of that idea .

There is only one hotel in town and it's sure to be booked, there are some weekend rentals that you could probably still snag but they are kinda pricey unless you have a big crew to split the cost.

Thanks for the advice.  I think I can scare up a few head treats to share for space.

We did find a hotel that costs $100 a night, that was the cheapest one, but if there is another campground, we will try to stay in that.  I'm getting so stoked! For the music too!

Yup, apparently:

It was only a matter of time. They play Telluride for the Bluegrass festival every year which has treditionally only missed the Mushroom Conference by about a week or two.

Can you say... Texas encore?

Yeah I'm taking my kids this weekend! Also took them to Burning Spear last weekend. Our summers are busy.  But they are not coming to S.F.  Too expensive, plus it's nice to have kid free weekends sometimes, especially since my kids are older.  I never used to go anywhere without them when they were little.  The good things about having kids young is that you're still young when they are older!
