I learned a lot practicing slow and making my fingers do exactly what I wanted, then working up to speed.

congrats on picking up guitar!

the best investment is a metronome. you'd be surprised how many peole can't keep time

your next best investment would be to learn to play you pentatonic scales, modes scales, scale coils in perfect time to the metronome.

When you have a rough idea of how scales and scale degrees work learn your bar chords, open cords and they work according to the scale they are built from

then you can get nitty gritty wit' it and learn triads, 7th, 9th, and so on chords.

don't rush, don't push yourself just have fun dude! set aside an hour a day to relax and play. every week you will notice definite improvement in technique and understanding of theory. You will also have the added health benefits of being peaceful and relaxed for one hour every day.

you may also want to learn how to maintain your guitar as it needs certain adjextments a couple times a year. keep your guitar in tip top shape and it will do the same fo you.

Learn open chords first!

E, A, G, D, C, Am, Em, Dm to start with.

I would also learn the notes in the Major scale, and how chords are built from it. There are tons of lessons online.

Don't forget to learn songs! Whole songs... verses, choruses, intros, and outros. It took me years before I realized how important that is. I was forever learning bits of songs... it doesn't really get you anywhere.

Definitely play with no distortion or overdrive when you are practicing scales and chords. That stuff can really hide bad playing, and if don't use it, you won't be fooled into thinking you are doing things the right way if you aren't.
Learn the basic chromatic scale, as it helps with picking and fingering coordination. Also, keep in mind that even though everyone may have a different way to practice, and there is no 'right' way to get better, slowing things down helps a lot.
I hate to say this, but being familiar with the metronome is a good thing.

Like other people are saying, learning entire songs makes guitar fun, and as far as I am concerned it's a great idea, but make sure that isn't all you do.

When I was learning guitar, I was unemployed and basically living at my friends house. It was probably the boredom of nothing to do over his house that led me to guitar in the first place, in a way. This kid does, and STILL really does nothing except play videogames. I used to play for 8 hours straight for like 7 months, before my practicing dwindled down to what it is now (1 hour/half an hour a day)

I've really been wanting to learn to play an instrument lately...I've been thinking bass guitar or guitar.  I really like bass lines in songs, and they're always what stand out to me when listening to music, so I'll have to look into one :smile:

So dude, all of this talk about learning scales, and chords, and location of notes on the fretboard, and everything... its all likely to spread your interest in playing too thin acrossed too much that doesn't even consist of just playing the damn instrument right now, which might very well kill your buzz. :wink:

An approach that might work best is to take a look at what type of stuff you'd like to play, the music that interests you, and everything. I'd recommend getting tablature software, like Guitar Pro. There are resource websites that have guitar pro files for an amazing amount of songs. This is much more preferable than all those websites with the text tabs, because, for one thing, you can actually play it in MIDI and hear how it sounds. These files have the timing included as well. Also, they tend to be more accurate.

Get a folder going on you computer with tons of songs you'd love to play, or songs that have guitar parts in them that interest you. Chances are, a lot of the stuff is going to be more difficult to play early on, but you'll find riffs here and there that are easier. Find these first, and work on them, so you have stuff you can actually jam with, you know? The most satisfying thing when you are starting to play guitar is to actually be able to jam on something, simple or not. :headbang: With a good selection of songs, you'll always have stuff you can jam on right now, and stuff just beyond your reach to work on developing your technique with. :smile:

This is pretty much what I have done, although I spend far more time just jamming on my own, with a sense of what I want to do. All of the other technical stuff, can be learned much easier when you have some experience and time invested in your playing.

I say.......

Learn to tune your guitar first!!!!!!!!!!

Find a friend that plays and jam with them after and during the following steps:

Learn G,C,D,E,Em,F,A,Am and thats it.........for right now.

A lot of rock is played in what is called drop D. Learn that and how to make power chords.

Dont get too overwhelmed by it. Playing the guitar will come natural to you after a couple of years. Plus the chics fuckin dig a dude that plays the guitar.

The first song I learned was 3 AM by Matchbox 20. Try it. I know that song is old and kinda gay but it is a good one for newbies to learn.

Definitely look into guitar pro or powertab as mentioned above. Guitar Pro is better, but unless you can obtain a pirated copy, it isn't free. the difference is worth the price IMO.
