Learning Guitar

What would be the best way for me to go about this. Besides paying money for lessons or whatever?

sweet, tab is really good for learning,

a program i like is http://www.power-tab.net/guitar.php

which will play the tabs as the music plays a bit like rolling sheet music.

a great archive for the actual tabs is http://www.powertabs.net/

i think you need to sign up, but its totally free.

what is confusing you about the tab?

Also, make sure you practice scales and chords over songs. Scales are the most important thing to leanr to becoming a competant guitarist.

I have a friend who has been playing for 8 years, but never learned a single scale, so he can't really do much other than power chords and a couple little licks. Scales are key!

It'd be better to practice scales for 30 minutes a day than to learn how to play a song for an hour a day. Scale Scales those fishy scales!

I'd also leanr on Acoustic, just because since you can hear mistakes easier, it makes you a less sloppy guitarist than with playing on an electric with distortion.

Good luck, brother!

Like with the tab when there is one number over the top of the other do you just play both of them?

scales are not necessary and you don't need them to be a good player but if you want to take your playing to any kind of advanced level then the theory behind the scales is certainly important, not memorizing the actual scales themselves.

i would also disagree with playing scales over songs when practicing, if new players just play scales they are either gonna become boring players or bored with the guitar.

i would agree with starting on acoustic though...

hmm, i'm not quite sure what you mean.
Code:

e------------------------------------------------------------]
h------------------------------------------------------------]
g------------------------3--3-------------------------6--6---]
D--3---3--3--------------3--3---6---6--6--------------6--6---]
A--3---3--3--x--x--x--x--1--1---6---6--6--x--x--x--x--4--4---]
E--1---1--1--x--x--x--x---------4---4--4--x--x--x--x---------]

horrible song i know but its good for an example.

the first part before the x's is left hand index finger on fret1 of the lowest E string and middle and ring finger (or ring and pinky dpending on your preference) on the 3rd fret of the A and D strings respectively. strum three times.

i dunno if this is what you were asking but meh.

The boring players or bored with the guitar part is pretty true...I circumvented this myself by writing songs.

That is another good piece of advice I like to give: No matter what your skill level is, try to write songs you like and feel. My first song was all power chords and I like it to this day because I can still feel it.

To tell you the truth, I've been playing guitar for about 5-6 years now, and consider myself an intermediate player at best (I know my way around the fret board pretty well, with applied music theory) but I DON'T know a single song! I think I can play a tame, lame verion of 8 days a week.

6 years, and I can only play songs I have written.

yeah composition is certainly the most fun and the longer you play the more enjoayble it becomes becuase you don't need to struggle to get the sound you want.

i always keep a few 'lady winners' memorized though, just incase

I actually took up the Guitar, originally, for the sole purpose of scoring a chick. Now I play "for real" and I am serious with it.

However, being a Bagpiper first, I really didn't have a chance with the ladies in the first place:lol:

Clarinet was TECHNICALLY my first instrument, that I started in grade school. Hated to play, but like the taste of the Reeds.

One reason the Bagpipes came into my life was partly clarinet related: I had wanted an instrument that used a reed, but at the same time I didn't want the reed any where near my mouth. So I had the choice of Harmonica, Accordian, and Bagpipe.

So for me it was Clarinet>Guitar(gave up first try)>ScottishBagpipes(gave up because i hate scottish music)>German Bagpipes>Guitar (succeeded on second try)

Next instrument I will play and Build is a hurdy-gurdy.
