I would personally learn allthe names of the Chords (if they are minor, majored, 5th, sixthed, 9thed, diminished, sustained, flatted, sharped ect.)
You don't need to, but it takes a lot of the work out of figuring out what key the other person is or what you are playing along with.
Instead of dicking around, I could just say to you, I'm in "Eb" or "A Major" Then you automatically know where on the fretboard you want to be.
Again, you don't need to, but it helps communication between muscians. I'd say knowing the names of the notes is way more important than being able to read notes.

first you should learn and practice the basic chords. start practicing simple songs, like the example posted (that is one of the first songs i learned). practice, practice and practice. when i first began playing i could easily spend 4+ hours playing, and i only knew like 10 easy ass songs but i still had fun. get yourself a book with a little theory or use online resources and i think lessons are a good idea. i've been playing for a bit over 4 years now and have never gotten lessons but i think i will ge them soon.

I think lessons are better once you been playing for a while. It seems to me that whoever you play with influences your style.
I jam out with my bro a lot, so my style has aspects of his.
If you start out with lessons, you may develop a style similar to your teachers, which may or may not be a bad thing.

hmm, never thought of that. my brother and i picked up the guitar at around the same time. it was an old, broken acoustic that had been in my house since forever. for some reason my mom decided to get it fixed, and i started fucking with it. it broke again like a month later but by then i was already addicted to playing guitar.
i rarely have time to play like used to but i still whip it out and fuck with it while watching tv. i'm fairly good at it but i think i need lessons to really go into the theory, i've tried to learn it on my own but i always lose focus.

Yeah, that guitar looks good to me. Unless you are playing on a WalMart special, any guitar from an actual Guitar company should be good enough to learn on,play on, and create beautiful music with.
It is not the price of the instrument, it is what you do with it. Unless the instrument is REALLY REALLY shitty.

Stevie Ray Vaughn used to speed up the the development of callouses by supergluing his fingers together and ripping them apart. At least that is what I heard.

I want to buy another unique sounding bagpipe, such as this crazy looking Italian Zampogna. It sounds like a cross between a clarinet and bagpipe and accordion.

Actually, I'd put it up there in the Top 5 hardest instruments to get a decent sound out of. It's easy to get good sounds out of a piano for instance, but hard to play intricate pieces. On bagpipes it is easy to play pieces (even some intricate ones), but difficult to get a good sound.
It is not difficult to play the style I play (Traditional Pre-1500s music) In all actuality, My Chanter (The pipe with the melody/flute holes) has 13 or 14 notes. Basically, C to D with 3 or 4 sharps/flats. So the music isn't really complex.I have two octaves, 1 Major Scale (C) and a minor (D) and a piece of the A Major/minor scale
The whole concept of a bagpipe is many simple ideas wroking in unison. But realize you have to have: Lip strength, the separate rhythms of playing the music while inflating and squezzing the bag, you have to be able to walk around playing, and improv skills (more like metal soloing than jazz soloing, although I do play jazzy music from time to time. After you master the concept of the pipes, the music is tit, really. It took me two years before people stopped hating my mere musical manifestation.:-)

Once you are able to switch between barre chords proficiently, I'd say you can pretty much play any song. Barre chords took me 2 years to get down, but I felt so proud once I did.
My friend is currently learning guitar, and I stressem about da Barre Chords. They are essential, methinks.
