Any guitar players?
    #4457803 - 07/27/05 12:17 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I've got a pretty nice guitar, and I used to play, but I forgot pretty much everything I learned. How did you guys learn? Any book recommendations or webpages I should check out?

This one's good, despite the horrible color scheme: http://www.cyberfret.com/

I learned electric just by tabs and ear, but for classical I read sheet music and have a teacher.

I reccomend just learning a lot of scales and chords at first. A good site for chords is www.chordfind.com

I play pretty often, though I don't make much of an attempt to record any of it right now. Like tonight I played in the dark during this lightning storm while drinking on wine and it was so pleasing. I had the urge to record at times but something usually persuades me not to. It's usually a reluctancy to institutionalize - just realizing the utter futility of the act.

I've been playing for about 6 years and in the beginning I took some lessons. My teacher was mainly into blues and at the time I was too. It was my main focus in music. But his teachings became kind of "boxed -in" as I found him perusing over the same pentatonic licks all the time and I figured I'd go about it on my own since I was covered in a lot of the basics then.

I don't look at guitar websites that often, but have gone to www.guitarnoise.com and www.guitartricks.com more than a couple of times.

I used to play also.

I had a kickass teacher. We used to smoke then jam. Then he got divorced, and stopped teaching

I mostly forgot everything except the power chords (like for IronMan and SmokeOnTheWater). I might pick it up later, when the time is right.

Also learning to play along with songs helps your timing and transition from one chord to the next. Some good sites for tabs are www.mxtabs.net and www.taborama.com

I play guitar. I just got into guitar though. So I kind of suck. But my boyfriend taught me how to play by just teaching me chords and then a few songs. Now I sit at home every night and play chords and different thing ... So far I have writen a half of a song ! Its awesome once you figure out what is what it is easy.

But then again I already knew a lot about music from playing other instrument like the piano trumpet french horn clarinet and so on....

What kind of guitar is it??????

I've played on and off for 4 years or so.  Got an Ibanez Iceman (Daron Malakian's guitar) not too long ago.  Plays pretty nice.  Good luck with your playing.

I play a beautiful Joe Pass signature. I believe there is no better teaching source than the Jamey Abersold books. They are even used and recommended by most professional jazz musicians. They contain the chords and melody to popular jazz tunes and with each book comes a CD. The CD is a recording of a band goign therough the charts of each song so you can play the melody, take a solo, or comp along with an actual band. You can order his books at http://www.jazzbooks.com/.

good links shroomism. none of my favorite bands have tab books out and the tabs on the net are not all right.i like to play heavy so i got Metallica 1988-1996 An Inside Look at the Guitar Styles of Metallica. it comes with a cd to see if youre playing right. its funny because i dont like metallica but i want to learn how to solo and play heavy fast chords. the only song im learning to play from the book is One.

That's actually what I first learned on to get tight with my band.. learning metallica songs. But 88-96?? I would have gone for 84-90 but that's me... Learn things on master of puppets too.. and kill em all. At least that will teach you your rhythm chops and chord progressions and whatnot and if you play old metallica solos you'll get the minor pentatonic scale down pat

Just try not to get caught in that constant chugga chugga metal mentality. Branch out and expand your horizons.. learn new techniques and styles. Constantly be seeking to learn something or improve some way of doing something.

Good advice.

And also, enthusiasm counts. If you putter around passionlessly, you won't notice very significant improvements in your playing all that much. The same goes for playing (and singing) for people. You'll get back the energy which you give into it.

I've been playing for over 10 years. I started with a teacher for the first few years to learn chords and scales but after a certain point I just went my own way.
