Oldtimer powdered cake method questions.
    #748306 - 07/15/02 01:03 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

Anybody tried using powdered cakes for spawn?

I know the oldtimer tek calles for straw, but would it work for worm castings?

Anybody had problems with it?

How contam resistant is worm castings?

I'm about to crumble a contaminated cake,(after peeling the outside layer off) into some worm castings. What are my chances with straight castings?

i liked them, a bit more contam-prone than ordinary composted manure but good yields.
the powdered cake method works good, just don't over-spawn, use 1 cake per gallon of castings minimum for fast colonization.

What type of contams are castings prone to?

Molds? Bacteria?

Am I wasting my time using this contaminated cake?

It has a green/gray fuzz growing on it.

I'm not casing it.

I'm using it as spawn in worm castings.

Well, I am now trying old timer's tek.
I just ground up a coupld of BRF cakes.....B+
I have a larger tub, which I used 2 for...
and a smaller box lined with plastic and used a little over 1 cake.
It has covered pretty much everything. I only hope that the straw isnt too wet.
I let it drain for like 6 hours. And it got nice and cool and it wasnt dripping.
But its really freaking moist!
Anybody know if this is gonna be ok? Old Timer?
Thanks!
