How clean are you?

I'm a total clean FREAK! I converted a entire room into my grow room complete with air lock and all. I wear a mask, a painters suit, rubber gloves, and a hat all washed in extremely hot water and bleach (except for the gloves). I have a hepa filter set into the air duct, removed all the carpet, sealed the floor, put down lynolom tile, painted the walls with waterproof basment latex paint, put 1 1/2" styrofoam over the window and sealed with .5 mil vyscline. I'm also running a hepa and using a ultrasonic humidifer with a 5% h2o2. I never enter the room before washing with antibacterial soap and spraying a 10% bleach solution in the air. So I guess from what I've read I'm a super clean freak.

"How clean are you?" --Not nearly as clean as you. I also use my own bedroom as my growing space complete with an incubator and two small fruiting chambers. I'm not a bulk grower so complete sterility isn't a problem but I am very clean with what I use. Ever since I got my pressure cooker I have strived to be as clean as posible and have utilized my 10% bleach solution and lysol to the max!

Dont get me started on cleanliness....I believe just about everyone is over doing it. Cleanliness is over rated IMO. The only time I find it necassary to be as anal as you describe is when working with cultures. This is all only IMO and IME. When I grew, I had shit in my closet with clothes dangling over the fruiting chambers, never had a prob with it. I sometimes take a cat hair or two off my casing layer, never had a prob. As long as I feel my hands are not filthy I dont bother to wash them, when spawning or breaking up a cake for example. And of all this and more I VERY RARELY get contams. Sure I got contams but ussually when a casing was exhausted, after a few flushes contams are inevitable. Shit, I cant remember the last time I lost a PF jar!!!
Remember this in my experience, I am not recomending anyone to take this seriously. Yet this is FACT in my experience!
I think ppl should lighten up a little

Pleezr, I couldnt agree with you more... I am a noob in growing mushrooms but i'll tell ya, every time i handle my cakes and jars, i dotn wash my hands, i do minimal sterilizing procedure, wipe stuff down with rubbing alky (70%), spray a lil bit of h2o2, no contaminations so far...

I grow in my bedroom. Before I open up the rubbermaid that is my incubator I shut off the a/c vent, spray down the room with lysol, wash handswith antibacterial soap, put on a dust mask, and spray my hands and arms with bleach solution. Once the rubbermaid is open I spray inside it with lysol and inside the lid before I close it back up. I use H2O2 in my humidifier water going to my fruiting chamber, which is another rubbermaid container. Ocasionally I get contams ( cobweb ) on my cakes, but this did not happen until after the 3rd flush. I tried to spray it back with 1 percent bleach water, but ended up doing a bleach dunk.

Im growing in my closet.all 12 jars, no contams yet, and they have clothes hanging over them. and even when i innoculated, i didnt even use air disenfectant. I just turned off the fan, and closed the door, and innoculated. None seem to be contamed yet. I really too think cleanliness is over-rated.

Well sterilization and cleanliness are two different things. Substrate for mycelium growth MUST be sterilized properly.

Good Point, Dog... Would there be a significant difference of contaminants in the air when growing in a place like arizona than a place like florida?
my guess would be yes... Anyone out there that lives in a dry area... you have a loaf of bread that tends to not mold in a longer time than in a humid area?

i think it is important to be clean while working but other than that it dosn't matter. My mom smokes cigs in the house in my room i smoke bud and burn insanse in my room. I'm not the cleaness person either but everything is going good so far. Cleaness is over rated but steralizeation is a important factor in mushroom growing. Dude that a really cool setup you have i'm going to make one of those rooms one day but i don't think the spraying of nleach water in the air is nessecery but whatever makes you happy.
have a good day all

as far as I'm concerned, the only major contamination threat is from improperly sterilised substrate, and once it's fully colonised contamination isn't really a danger any more. I do agar work (peroxidated admittedly) grain transfers, make syringes etc without even the most basic oven tek, and contams are few and far between. So yes, I'm not very clean at all. Maybe I'm just lucky

When opening uncolonized jars, even briefly to squit some spore solution in, my cat uses his ghetto-glovebox in a lysol-sprayed bathroom with washed and alcohol-sterilized hands up to the elbows. He rinses with listerine too, since the majority of bacteria in your environment lives and breeds in your mouth.
But for straw spawning, casing, and just basic stuff he just turns off the fan, closes the door, sprays alcohol on his hands and arms, and goes to it. If he's feeling paranoid he also gargles some listerine and/or wipes his work surface down with CiDecon (laboratory cleaner).
He's only twice contamed casings - trichoderma (which he just scooped out, re-cased, and recovered) and cobweb mold (which he just threw out, since it was after 4th flush anyway).
Of course, kitty live in a relatively new house (only about 20 years old). Older homes often have many different kinds of molds that have taken root there, and are difficult to combat. Your precautions really have to match your individual situation.
I do think that it's best that one be as clean as they are comfortable being. If you don't mind wearing a plastic suit or bathing in lysol, then doing so can't hurt your chances.

I thought I was the only one who wasn't aal about cleanliness....
I am a little cautious when making syringes and innocing jars(oven tek) but other than that I don't use any special clean teks. I thought I was just lucky:)

When I innoculated my 19 jars, I just used some alcohol and a paper towel, and a cigarette lighter, at my computer desk. No oven tek or anything. Also they were steamed, not PC'd.
I think the oven tek is a joke by the way.
Out of 19 jars I got 0 contams.
I do however spray lysol before I fan. The mold is so bad in this house that it fucks with my sinuses!

im the biggest fuckin slob on earth, and have had over 60 jars with 100% success, no pressure cooker...its way too over rated and some people make this thing so much more complicated and expensive than it needs to be...ive had much better luck not listenig to what others say, it will get you hung up on things that dont matter, paranoid about failure, and having to really bust your ass for no reason...just wash your hands when crumbling cakes and youll be fine..
