How long after lysol is it safe to innoculate jars?
    #1965761 - 09/30/03 11:17 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

This pertains to like if i lysol the crap out of a fruiting chamber, or a glove box, how long do i need to let it sit before putting my jars into the box. I don't want to lysol everything, then have it be the thing that kills my jars. Is there such thing as using too much lysol?

15-20 mins. Until dry. Lysol kills surface contaminants not air contaminants. It works like rubbing alchohol, it is done when it is dry.

But, a little bit of lysol in the air shouldn't kill your jars in a glove box... unless you are using tiny samples (and they became covered in lysol) to inoculate your jars.

I know you can use too much lysol. I had a friend who killed his jars with lysol. But, he used a LOT of lysol in his fruiting chamber and misted at the same time then he put his cakes inside.

The lysol mixed with the water. The mycelia drank the lysol and died.

He didn't have the shroomery to save him.

Since your cakes will grow in the fruiting chamber, and humidity clings to the sides of this chamber, only use lysol before you put your cakes in. Make sure it is dry before adding humidity or the Lysol won't evaporate. This should be good for growing. Once colonized, cakes are pretty resiliant. After the first treatment with lysol, I'd only use h2o2 to clean the growing chamber. While not as strong as Lysol, H2O2 will eventually break down into water.

i would re-wipe it clean with a paper towel of pure alcohol. lysol leaves crap behind like deodorizers and stuff. just lysol probably works fine but ive never done it any other way, no matter how i clean anything it always gets swabbed with pure 93 or whatever % alcohol afterwards.
