BIG WARNING at Lysol etc.
    #2409382 - 03/09/04 07:53 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

I first thought this topic belongs more in the safety section but i realized it can be posted really well here.

When i began to grow mushrooms, i understood pretty quick that everything has to be CLEAN !
So like a lot of newbies, i didn't want a screw up and i was making sure EVERYTHING was super hyper very CLEAN !! So i began to use a lot of spray lysol, lysol and bleach solution .. I abused so much of the spray lysol it's unbelievable ! Let's say around 1 bottle every 2-3 weeks. I cleaned a lot with diluted bleach solution 1/20 or even 1/10 sometimes to make SURE everything was CLEAN !!
I realized later that i didn't have to be that clean! Even if you need to be very clean in some of the steps like Inoculations and grain to grain transfer, you don't have to be that paranoid about cleanliness.. Especially after your mycelium is well established and you put the casing on.

I just finished a bunch of tests at the hospital and with my doctor trying to know why i developed a trouble breathing especially at night and when i'm not moving too much. We discovered that i "burned" my lungs with F***** lysol and bleach solution being too paranoid about cleanliness .. THESE PRODUCTS ARE DANGEROUS ! We have to use it only few times and make the best possible not to breath it..
Ok maybe i used and extreme amount of it, but i know even half of what i was using can hurt just the same ..
If you're using 1 bottle of spray lysol every 3-4 or even 5-6 weeks, you're using too much . If you're cleaning with a bleach solution, dilute it at least: at least i say 1/50 . It's more than enough to clean good. And for the spray lysol, you don't need it very often, you may need it a little bit during inoculations and transfers and that's almost it.. Don't spray lysol in the air every time you open your Rubbermaid to fan it or every time you go in your growing room or .. you get the idea..

Personally i'll be well, my lungs will heal but it could have been a lot worst if i didn't do anything about it ..

I hope that can help some people .

I never have hurt myself with Lysol... but I did kill my first grow by spraying too much Lysol. Doh! It is a FUNGICIDE!

Once a jar or bag is innoculated and sealed, the best thing you can do is leave the jars/bags in their Rubbermaid and check them every few days. This does a great job of protecting them from contamination.

You can love your myc to death, and you can use too much Lysol.

Glad you're ok.

hehe ! yeah lysol is bad !
I hurt one time too my grow by spraying too much !
Now i laugh at myself before when i was even spraying my clothes before entering the area where they were growing ! lol !!
The worst time is when i washed a room with a bleach solution 1/10 . I really wanted to make sure it was very clean !
After maybe 10 minutes i ran out of the room and went throw up in the bathroom because i was too intoxicated and i couldn't breath well for a while !!!

hehe, yep, that was really stupid !!

The lysol itself wouldnt be what I would worry about. I'm sure it's dangerous in concentration, but inhaling indirectly on a regular basis even, is "acceptable" IMO. Mixing bleach with hot water in an unvented area is very dangerous. Want to have serious health problems? Breath in bleach steam.

you're right myceliumcake .
however lysol is a strong product as well .
I wouldn't inhale on a regular basis (not anymore!) any strong products, especially the ones which kills 99,9% or all germs !

Anyone seriously concerned about their aspiration of any chemical should maybe buy a respirator.

Im totally against lysol too, and not just for shrooms. An aerosol disinfectant could never be good for you to breathe. Not only is it corrosive to tissue and mucus membranes but you could also end up getting an infection by inhaling too much of it.

Urgh.

First, don't mix cleaning solutions unless you know that it's safe to do so. You mention lysol + bleach -- I don't know what kind of lysol cleaning solution you're using is, but if it contains ammonia or isopropyl alcohol that'd be the cause of your problem right there. Congratulations! You've been inhaling one of the first chemical gas weapons employed in modern warfare! You can join many of the millions of soldiers killed or injured by this toxic gas! Yes, we're talking about that wonder of wonders, that green-killing machine, chlorine!

Even if that wasn't the problem, extreme concentrations of cleaning solutions can damage you. Low exposures of chlorine like the ones that generally waft from solutions of bleach won't rot our longs quite as fast as high concentrations will, but remember -- both of the things that you're using are made to kill stuff. Usually, things used to kill stuff aren't wise to breathe or imbibe or otherwise incorporate into your body in anything other than the smallest possible amounts. There's a reason why most cleaning products say 'use in a well ventilated area' on 'em.

In short, folks, read the usage and warning labels chemical products you use.
