I do the carry a flask and dump some into a soda thing, but dollar beers are always good... or get some hot girl to buy you a drink

Pregaming is also essential to the cheap tab... have a few before you leave so you dont rack up a huge bill

if it's a decent bar, you're not going to have the opportunity to "chap up with the bartender". bartenders are serious and they're in it for the money. you need to have your cash ready, know what you want, and get the fuck out of their way so the next person can get a drink. trying to "chap up" will result in you getting ignored by the bartender for the rest of the night.

like these guys said, pregame is the way to go. and i will have to second the suggestion of pregaming with redbull and vodka.

It's that way here in Citrus County, FL,
but the bars are scarcely populated.

The bars around here do it saying, thier trying to help prevent DUI.
It's rediculous really, all thier accomplishing is "driving"
business away.

pregame is ok - but sometimes you can over do it and 'get er done' a little early.

i drink $1.25 pabst and play pool with people and everyone always buys me shots here and there. usual bar tab for a 6 hour shift is $15 in beer in $5 or so at pool and jukebox. get your own tab if your staying a while. avoid buying arounds of shots gets spendy.

i live in small town - know all the bartenders - definately bribery in the form of marijuana goes a long ways with some bartenders. you have something for them not many people do - every dude has $ but nugs oh yeah.

also, if you frequent places be kind, like if bartender gives you a free drink(s) make sure to tip including that drink(s) or my personal policy is to give in tip the amount the freebies would have cost. most bartenders have excellent memories. have you ever watched a bartender make a drink for a well liked customer and then seen him make one for the prick that never tips.
