I have asked about this stuff before, didn't get much reaction; I actually found some Jiffy Mix, called 'jiffy mix plus' or something like that. Essentially it is normal Jiffy Mix with these crystals added. "Less watering needed!" I've seen plant cuttings grow from the crystals alone wetted and placed between two panes of glass--so it's likely not too toxic. BUT------ The stuff I have seen is usually polyacrylamide or polyacrylate or a combination of the two. Polyacrylamide, once completely polymerized is a relatively non-toxic substance. I'm fairly sure the same is true with polyacrylate. Unpolymerized polyacrylamide [aka acrylamide, the building blocks of these 'crystals'] is VERY toxic and carcinogenic. Labs use polyacrylamide gels and have to make up the stuff from the base acrylamide and IT IS TOXIC SHIT. So, my question is whether fungus has the capability or propensity to break the polyacrylamide bonds and incorporate the acrylamide into their tissues. Honestly, I don't think it is a problem. If you've never played with these crystals, check them out. One teaspoon will expand to about a cup and hold that water for days. I'd love to hear if anyone has tried them in casing mixes; could be a great advance.

I just found out about the polymer tek. However, in lieu of people finding pieces of vermiculite in their shrooms, I'm wondering if it's such a good idea to use polymer in my casings, since obviously there is some propensity for a mushroom to contain small particles of its substrate. I don't want to eat polymer crystals! Thanks everyone!

Well, actually, i have had some experience with this.. i used Shultz moistureplus potting mix for casings in the past. i hasicly contains. peat, a little bit of perlite, and those polymers. at the time the conditions in my terrerium were not perfect. but the polymered casings seemed to retain water better and didnt need misting.. i also got a slight increase in fushes. As far as the polymer being attached to the mushrooms... no not that i ever found.. i clean my shrooms thouroughly too..------------------ -LuciferX- "What if this world is another worlds hell?" -Aldous Huxley

ok i tried this stuff but what i did was soak the crystals is a bowl with 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of h202 when all the liquid was absorbed into the crystals i put about 3/4`s of an inch of this now jelly like stuff in a small tray then crumbled 2 1/2 pint cakes about an inch thick over the soil moist and on top of that sraight peat the shrooms that came from this were huge fatass ugly son of a bitches (but then again they were pf`s ) after the first flush the casing got green mold an i chucked it in the trash never tried the stuff again but i do have a 1 pound can of this so maybe ill try it again i actually forgot i had the stuff till i read this post
