moisture crystals

Someone in a post I read earlier today said that I could use something called "moisture crystals" so when I went to Lowes to pick up manure I saw a package of moisture crystals. They are called "Root Water Crystals". It says that I am supposed to add it to "potting media". My question is, can I mix with my cow manure? The purpose of these crystals is to retain moisture that the root system will use. I'm just not sure if it will kill the spores/mycelium and prevent it from colonizing the substrate. It says on the package that its non-toxic.
Is anyone familiar with these? Should I try it?

Most successful growers use vermiculite for that purpose.

I have used water crytals as a casing layer.. Used about 2 quarts of rye and put 1/2 inch of water crystals on. (Crstals were sterilzed in pressure cooker in a jar for 30 min) DO NOT put crystals in water in the pressure cooker...they will get very big! hehe
The pic shows that i let the casing go too long and now it has caing overlay i think.
